Well-written, fast-paced British police procedural. A good storyline, plenty of suspense especially towards the end and likeable characters. If I had to make a complaint it was Fletcher’s boss being so obviously wrong about the case & the fact they mostly ignored him.
Enjoyable.
Will read more from this author
Good mystery story.
interesting, different story line. enjoyed the intrigue.
very well written and good story to lose yourself in
This is a great mystery read – and the setting is in a part of the British Iles that is a bit unfamiliar to most Americans. The area is brought to life in a fashion that then is accessible to everyone. We may not know the area, but we understand the folks and the feelings of being back in a place can invoke
Good story with many twists.
Didn’t see it coming.
Congrats to the author for a new series that promises to entertain mystery fans. This is a great police procedural with information on just how murder sites are treated and conducted and has a nice female lead detective in Kate. As a British mystery it presents a small area affected by a miners strike years ago and as small towns are, sides are taken and remembered even years later.
Lots of atmosphere and chills as it realistically plays on basic fear as a young family member going missing and a town closes its ranks to find the child. But another child soon goes missing and now the town turns on itself to find the culprit.
Kate grew up here and moved away and has memories of the past and the mine strikes and how people lost jobs or moved away. She has moved back after a divorce and has a son in college. This is her first case as the lead investigator and she has a new team to inform and guide and handle the crisis.
The book uses flashbacks of when Kate and her sister Karen lived in town and the mentality of the miners versus the scabs. Her boss does not believe the past is a factor here so she follows his lead but goes by her gut also and her gut says to be aware of the past sins of the families.
If you are easily upset at the thought of a child’s death, skip this book. But I must say that this moves along fast and you become involved in each family and the way the police need to investigate and go over alibis and rumors and double check every fact. You see the team try and remain calm and centered
as they deal with grief and anger.
This book has a shocking factor come to light during the investigation that sent my pulse racing. A nice addition to my mystery addiction and hoping she writes more with the very real Kate Fletcher.
Interesting twist that endangered the DCI’s own family.
This was a good, solid murder investigation but despite the detailed plot I just didn’t find it as suspenseful as expected. The author is a good writer, scene descriptions & police procedures spot on, but I just felt that it lacked a little something.
This is a story about revenge. A young girl dies due to bullying, now years later those that bullied her are experiencing a death in their families. It was an easy read. I had the killer figured out way to early. I also skipped over pages that kept repeating themselves.
