I pinch the screen to zoom until I’m staring at the face of a ghost. A man with very short hair, staring directly at the camera with piercing brown eyes. He is as he was when I last saw him: wrinkles around the corners of the eyes and a knowing smirk. That’s the expression I see when I can’t sleep. My body tenses. It can’t be him. It’s not my ex-husband. It’s not David. I know that better than …
I know that better than anyone because he didn’t walk out on me.
He didn’t disappear two years ago and he’s not a missing person.
I know that for a fact because I’m the one who killed him.
A brilliantly twisty thriller which will have fans of The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl absolutely gripped.

It’s been two years since Morgan killed her husband David. No one knows her secret. To everyone else, she’s just the poor wife whose husband has vanished without a trace. Morgan has moved on and doesn’t have time to dwell on the past. But when she looks at a photograph of herself taken recently at an event, she sees none other than David standing behind her. But David is dead, isn’t he? Close to You is a gripping, slow-burn psychological thriller. The plot is dark, compelling, and thoroughly entertaining. The story switches between the past and the present and is told from Morgan’s own perspective. But can we really trust Morgan’s version of events? After all, she’s a self-confessed liar and has made it perfectly clear that she has no remorse for killing David. With each chapter, the mystery deepens, and the tension builds to the point where I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. It definitely kept me guessing as to how the story would end. The twist did manage to surprise me. It was not at all what I had been expecting but overall it was a great way to end the story. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark, twisty thrillers. It was so easy to fall into this story, especially after the ending to the first chapter. “I know that for a fact because I’m the one who killed him.” While not a face paced book, it certainly was a page-turner. I was engrossed by Morgan’s story, both the present and the past. With every chapter I became more engrossed with the past, desperate to know what strange habits David was up to and what led her to kill him. The author had me believe that in fact she had not killed David after all and he was the one haunting her (pun intended) so the twist was great.
Having read multiple Wilkinson books in the past, I really looked forward to this one and I was not disappointed. It was twisty, suspenseful and with a huge twist at the end that I don’t think that anyone will be able to guess. Morgan is hanging out with her friend Jane, an amateur photographer who tries to capture everything she sees on film, when Morgan looks at one of Jane’s photos and thinks she sees her dead husband David. How is that possible when Morgan knows she killed him herself? When he continues to show up at the most unexpected times and places, Morgan is determined to solve the mystery and do away with David once and for all. There were no really obvious clues to help me solve the mystery and I loved that I had to work at solving it…and I was still wrong! Loved that! Throughout the book, the suspense was building slowly; it was almost like a living being hanging around on my shoulder. It was very intense for me! My favorite thing about the book is that it is told in two time frames, the present and the past. But the past is not called the past; instead, it is called the “why” and I really thought that was brilliant! Fans of fast-paced and quirky thrillers will enjoy this one for sure!

An eerie psychological mystery that is a bit different than the typical narrative delivered by Kerry Wilkinson. The reader is handed an understated plot that cleverly refrains from a clear identification of the protagonist and antagonist. Perhaps Wilkinson is allowing the reader to decide for themselves. While the pace is steady and definitely not the rapid, succession of his other novels, Wilkinson does deliver a quality narrative filled with the typical twists and turns that we have come to expect. 5 stars.
