Danger and betrayal, love and loss, secrets and enchantment are woven together in the breathtaking finale to the #1 New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices Trilogy, prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Danger intensifies for the Shadowhunters as the New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices trilogy comes to a close. If the only way to save the world was to … only way to save the world was to destroy what you loved most, would you do it?
The clock is ticking. Everyone must choose.
Passion. Power. Secrets. Enchantment.
Danger closes in around the Shadowhunters in the final installment of the bestselling Infernal Devices trilogy.more
Tessa Gray has been abducted by Mortmain and most use her own knowledge and strength to escape. Jem is extremely sick and unable to go after Tessa, so Will goes. Mortmain’s plan to destroy the Shadowhunters with his automatons is a go and Charlotte Branwell must rally her troops, without the help of the Clave, to stop him.
I enjoyed this whole trilogy and Clockwork Princess closed it out well. Tessa uses her ability in a unique way and the end resulting is shocking. Jem’s story breaks my heart and his future is slightly better. I’m was a bit disappointed with the whole Will/Jem/Tessa love “triangle”. I felt things changed too quickly and easily. The ending of the book follows Tessa throughout many years and gives the reader an excellent history of all the Shadowhunters. She really gave the readers closure and I think we may see more of Tessa.
Jemmmmmmmm my baby and Will the edge-lord…
As usual Cassandra Clare never fails to impress. This book was by far the best in The Infernal Devices series. All the characters evolved and we evolved with them but this book just wraps up everything very nicely. Like a present. I, personally, did not feel as much as an emotional connection as I did in The Mortal Instruments but that doesn’t mean the infernal devices was any less amazing. I’ve been waiting a whole Trilogy and finally Will Herondale has lived up to his name. I would definitely recommend this series, as with all of Cassandra’s other books. I cannot wait until The Last Hours comes out when we can finally continue Jem, Tessa, and will’s story. So exciting!
WOW!!!!!!!
This series has been a huge rollercoaster and this last book another all on its own. You will need a box of tissues just for this book. But the ride is AWESOME!!!!
I know for sure this is going to be a trilogy that will become one of my favorites I will read again and again. I am sure I missed some things the first time through so I will look forward to picking up those little tidbits at another time.
It is my hope that you have found the other two just as exciting as I have or are researching to see if this is a trilogy you want to read. As for me, it was awesome and certainly worth the time. I loved it and hope you chose to read them.
I am now looking forward to reading the next set she has. I now have a new author.
An army of infernal devices waits in the distance, it’s one goal to eradicate the Shadowhunters. Mortmain is still hunting for Tessa, determined to claim her and user her power against the Shadowhunters she holds dear. When she is taken captive, the Clave refuses to respond, caught up in their own politics. It is up to the London Shadowhunters to save Tessa. But can so few stand against an entire army?
I have never read a trilogy before where the protagonist is so thoroughly shoved into the background until the final book. The heart of this trilogy was based around the love triangle of Tessa, Will, and Jem. It was slow and tedious because the same things happened again and again. I suppose those who fancy romance novels would love this series, but I am not one of those people.
I was also surprised to find that a character we’ve known throughout the trilogy did a complete turn around with their beliefs. It was as if another character had the same name. It broke the rules set down by the previous two books just to make a plot device. There was weak reasoning given around it, but after book two I couldn’t believe it.
It took a good half of the book to pick up the pace. When it did start rolling with action, I was glued to it even though deep down I knew the ending to this trilogy. Anyone who has read Mortal Instruments knows how it ends.
Maybe my hopes were too high for this trilogy because I loved Mortal Instruments. I can’t say I enjoyed the Infernal Devices.
The final installment of The Infernal Devices tied up all loose ends and gave every character the justice they deserved. Henry finally proved his worth, Charlotte prevailed against all odds, the Lightwood brothers went from nasty antagonists to lovable allies, and all the mysteries were finally solved.
While I felt the relationships between some characters were being slightly rushed, my favorite part from the book was actually the creative, we’re-all-winners type of HEA Clare devised for the complicated love triangle between Tessa, Will and Jem.
Love love these series
I love this series!
Amazing series. Too much to review. I guess you’ll have to read it.
Interesting twist on a love triangle
I was wondering how this final book in the trilogy was going to tie up so many loose ends left dangling after the last book but I guess I shouldn’t have been concerned as this was a whopping 16 hours+ long! If I’ve any complaint it’s that it was too long even though there was a lot going on. With that said, it all led up to a very satisfying and extraordinary ending.
I’m not a fan of love triangles, especially young adult ones, and never will be so I wasn’t looking forward to the resolution of the Tessa/Jem/Will entanglement. It pains me to say this given my attitude but this one was beautifully written and actually made me cry. It touched me in ways I never saw coming and made my commitment to the listening for hours series feel more than worthwhile. I replayed the epilogue three times.
The Lightwoods were at odds when we last saw them and there’s an extraordinary climax involving Benedict and his two sons, Gideon and Gabriel. It was epic with lasting effects on all of them.
But the main event was all about stopping Mortmain and his mechanical army, the infernal devices. As Tessa’s identity was tied to this story arc, there was much to be revealed. The scenes leading up to the final showdown were über exciting and unpredictable with no one really sacred from serious injury or death. Charlotte Branwell’s issues with the Clave Council’s Consul escalate as he seeks to undermine and dispose of her from the Institute. The political machinations are as interesting as everything else in this story. And, another new narrator who excelled at everything but Tessa’s voice as he seemed to have to stop and read to pull off an American accent. Otherwise, he was flawless.
It’s a spectacular conclusion to the series though the lead up was better than the final scene. Maybe that’s normal given the high expectations I formed. No matter as overall I enjoyed the story and the series and was extremely satisfied with the ending. Yes, it should have been shorter but I landed in a great place.
This review MAY contain spoilers.
OH MY GOD, MY HEART!! I feel as if my heart has literally beat itself into nothing. I don’t think that I have ever had such physical pain after ending a series. I literally wept through the entire epilogue and an over hour thereafter. I will have THE WORST book hangover this week. This month? Until the end of days? Who knows? Cassandra Clare, you sly dog, you will be the death of me. With all the upcoming Shadowhunter books coming out I may very well die of all the feels and my gravestone will read “Here lies Vanessa, bludgeoned to death by the beat of her own heart while fangirling over Shadowhunters and Warlocks”. A magnificent death to be sure.
In all seriousness though, this book and this series really did destroy me. I have so much love for these characters. I feel like they are a part of me, like family. They are precious to me. That is how Clare writes her characters. She is innately talented in creating characters that fill you up with emotions. The reader really does live through them as they read. One of the best things about the characters that Clare writes is the relationships between the characters. The relationships are crafted so expertly, so seamlessly. Another wonderful thing about Clare’s character writing is the character growth. The main characters always have so much development as the story progresses. Personal growth as well as growth in their relationships with other characters in the story. Clare is just brilliant with writing characters.
Another thing that makes this book and Clare’s Shadowhunter books so amazing is the scope of the plots in her books. The has a magical touch with creating compelling plots with story arcs spread throughout. The pacing of the plot is always spot on, always fluid. The reader is never bored and is always left wanting more. Clare has a superior way of including heart-wrenching twists in her stories and this book was no different.
I may be repeating myself from my review of the last book in this series, but Clare’s world building is phenomenal! All of her books build off of each other to create a truly unique world. Stories from the same world, but in different timelines. The time that it must have taken her to research and flesh out this world must have been years of her life. Clare is truly a master of creating intricate fantasy worlds that inspire and continue to grow.
Overall, if you are looking for a book to thoroughly destroy you from the inside then look no further. This series will make you feel so many feels! If you are an urban fantasy fan then this book and any of Clare’s books will feed your book lust. I highly recommend this book and this series! I feel so strongly about this series that I feel I may have to start shoving a physical copy of it in people’s faces and rant about it like a madwoman. Now please excuse me while I inconvenience a necromancer and persuade him to nurse me back to life after being so thoroughly slaughtered by this series!
This is a 5-star in that it satisfies in a really lovely way. The pacing felt slow but the reward is worth it. The story comes to a close but I’ll be thinking about this one a while, for sure. Prepare yourself for tears, that’s for sure!
Also love it
i do love a good love triangle and this one is all in all pretty satisfying. Loved Tessa really coming into her own in this conclusion to the Infernal Devices series.
No words! This was a perfect ending to a great trilogy!
This series is my favorite installment by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Jem and Will as parabatai so much their bond is amazing. I am in love with Tessa she is an amazing addition to their team. She is my favorite female wore-lock. Her love for Wll is so pure its amazing, but she also shows and amazing love with Jem that I love just as much. I also want to give Jessie credit for her sacrifice because she just gets looked over. Henry and Charlotte deserve recondition to they help out future shadow-hunters. Icaan’t forget to mention Magnus is in these too!!!!!!!!! There’s also a cute cat named Church
So I loved the plot again it was great for the 3rd book, before I do go into it, people said City of Heavenly Fire has a spoiler in for Clockwork Princess and yes there is but I didn’t even realise until I read Clockwork Princess. Like I didn’t even realise that Jem became a silent brother, I know they went by Zachiary (if that’s how you spell it) so when it did happen I was still shocked. I was like the fuck! Like he died! Will felt that bitch die. Well obviously he isn’t dead because he’s a silent brother. The bit with Tessa kind of broke my heart where he had to sever ties but then he promised to meet her on the bridge every year for an hour. That was beauitful.Gabriel coming to the institute
Gabriel coming to the institute that was shocking for him to actual turn up but Will loved that he was coming about Demon Pox I think that was one of my favourite things in this book Will always being excited about demon pox and winding them all up about it, that was one of the light humour in this book and I loved it. Just it made me chuckle whenever it mentioned. And Will being Will of course took the opportunity to wind up Gabriel about it.
Jem uses up all his demon drug supply and he obviously worsens and then there is no supply left because the evil man (not even attempting to spell that and the book is upstairs) so when Will flips out at him with good reason but then you can’t also fault Jem’s reasoning that he just wants to just live fully and not a half life. So when bad guy offers him the supply for Tessa. Bravo Jem for destroying that shit bravo. I totally agree with your choice to do that! Bad Will (ish) for getting it back out.
It was a brilliant love triangle, I didn’t have a favourite like I usually do, I just wanted her to be with both and of course she is! She gets to be with both! Obviously after Jem becomes a silent brother he can no longer be with Tessa. One thing before I carry on, when Tessa realises Jem is dead her and Will slept together straight away, like I understand they love each other and she loved Jem too, I wondered if a part of it was just mourning or that she knew they could be together at that point. I was a little like what to that, but I was still like yes! They got together! I thought it was cute that Will thought she might regret it. But Will and her get together and marry and live happily ever after until you know he dies. Then she gets to be with Jem once he leaves the Silent Brothers. AHHH so cute i was so happy when that happened. She got to be with both of her two true loves and they were both beautiful and it was amazing.
I loved the way Gideon tried to propose to Sophie first by telling everyone then that stunned moment where she’s like what. Haha it was brilliant and the fact that she was so shocked and oblivious to the fact how Gideon felt towards her. Hey Cassandra Clare, can we have a book on Gideon and Sophie? I would love it and the fact she becomes a shadowhunter too is amazing. I love them both they are my side characters, I love the side characters.
Cecily and Will, these two reminded me of Isabelle and Alec in Mortal instruments the sibling argument how much they disagreed on stuff and how they always wanted to protect each other. That is the only relation between them two sibling pair. Just thought I’d mention that in passing. Erm the fact Will tries so hard to get his sister to go home is quite funny. When they go to fight at the Lightwood’s house when Benedict has been turned into a jiant worm his fear for his sister but also I think a part of him is proud about what she did there and it was so nice I love their brother and sister relationship and the fact she just wanted to bring him home. She finally gets her wish at the end of the book when he goes home to introduce Tessa to their family and it was so nice. What also thought was amusing is the fact that although Will and Gabriel wind each other up that Cecily likes him, can anyone say annoying karma haha.
Charlotte and Henry I feel like these two make a lot of progress during this especially Henry with his inventions even if he did have a little help from Magnus. But it was wonderful to see that he was so happy for the portal working so I was happy. Also Charlotte on naming their baby yeah I would have said no to Henry’s suggestion too but she even put it in the middle name so happiness for both of them.
Jessie I feel like she needs a passing in mention obviously she dies in this book and although I hated her for teaming up with Nate. I was sad she died, I was surpised I felt something about the fact she died. Then she obviously tells Will what he needs to know but of course Cecily is the only one who gets it. Then at the end where her punishment is to guard the institute and she doesn’t seem so bothered about doing it. So it’s a nice change from her hating it so much.
I’ve read all the mortal instruments and infernal devices. Great books!
I am excited that Cassandra Claire has moved into more “adult” writing. I have “grown up” with these books and look forward to be moving to a more mature writing style… Hopefully. I haven’t read her newest series yet
Awesome trilogy, highly recommend! Love the Victorian era setting, and the demons, warlocks, vampires, etc. The romantic aspects of the book are great and don’t take away from the plot.
