Find a cast of gritty, compassionate, and courageous characters that make the journey to mythological fame despite their shortcomings and frailties. Pull away the veil of magic, reveal the difficulties of love and loss and struggle with life.
Because Santa Claus is much more than … more than presents.
In the early 1800s, Nicholas, Jessica, and Jon Santa attempt the first human trek to the North Pole and stumble upon an ancient race of people left over from the Ice Age. They are short, fat, and hairy. They slide across the ice on scaly soles and carve their homes in the ice that floats on the Arctic Ocean. The elven are adapted to life in the extreme cold. They are as wise as they are ancient.
Their scientific advancements have yielded great inventions— time-stopping devices and gravitational spheres that build living snowmen and genetically-modified reindeer that leap great distances. They’ve even unlocked the secrets to aging. For 40,000 years, they have lived in peace.
Until now.
An elven known as The Cold One has divided his people. He’s tired of their seclusion and wants to conquer the world. Only one elven stands between The Cold One and total chaos. He’s white-bearded and red-coated. The Santa family will help him stop The Cold One. They will come to the aid of a legendary elven known as… Claus.

Bertauski writes wonderful twisted stories that partake of the mythical with a strong realistic thread. You never know quite what you will get with his tales, even when he begins with a well-known figure like Santa Claus!
Great premise, not great writing.
Really enjoyed some of the novelty in the re-interpretation of tired story line. Talked about it to my grown kids & they thought I was nuts.
Good quick read. I enjoyed it.
This was a very interesting take on the origin of Santa Claus. I loved it!
I really liked this one, Tony is an original author.
good story also
A great read for December! An interesting and unique twist on the origin of the big guy in the sleigh, and how he and his reindeer get things done. Add in a civil rebellion among elves, a very evil villain in the form of Jack Frost, a plot by said villain to destroy all of humanity before humanity destroys the earth, and you’ve got a pretty good …
It was interesting but I wouldn’t recommend it. I finished it only because I don’t like to leave books unfinished (unless they are awful). I wasn’t impressed.
An interesting twist on the Santa myth.
Interesting premise. A little bizarre (more than a little, I guess) but worth the read, especially in December.
I really like a good sci fi book that lays out its rules (like physics) and then follows those rules in ingenious ways to solve the problem the book presents. Although this story was different and interesting, I was annoyed by the practice of the author to present a problem, but then solve it with a newly invented rule. That is, just when you …
Santa Claus mixed with some Dr. Who, and kind of strange but intriguing.
Interesting take on the Santa Claus concept. At times seems a little simple, and all of a sudden it’s just “wow, what a cool way to look at and present that!” A nice, easy read.
Interesting take on a classic.
Did I really mark “funny”?! Yes, I found some of the characters to be incredibly charming and funny. And, not charming, but still funny. The book was a fun read. Different perspective of the iconic Christmas character and how all the “magic” works out. It is just really inventive. I read other’s reviews on this book and saw that many thought …
Wonderful twist on the classic Santa Claus legend.
A unique twist on where and how Santa Claus had his beginning.
New twist on the Legend of Santa Claus. A little slow developing but stick with it,
its worth it.
Poorly written with way to many all caps sentences.
