Clark Gable arrived in Hollywood after a rough-and-tumble youth, and his breezy, big-boned, everyman persona quickly made him the town’s king. He was a gambler among gamblers, a heavy drinker in the days when everyone drank seemingly all the time, and a lover to legions of the most attractive women in the most glamorous business in the world, including the great love of his life, Carole Lombard.… Lombard.
In this well-researched and revealing biography, Warren G. Harris gives an exceptionally acute portrait of one of the most memorable actors in the history of motion pictures—whose intimates included such legends as Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Loretta Young, David O. Selznick, Jean Harlow, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Spencer Tracy, and Grace Kelly—as well as a vivid sense of the glamour and excess of mid-century Hollywood.

I have always been intrigued with Clark Gable and bought this for a weekend of reading. I thoroughly loved the book and the matter-of-fact telling of Clark Gable’s life, movie by movie. I believe it was an accurate description of accounts and didn’t sugarcoat his love of woman. I would have liked a little more details on my all-time favorite movie, Gone With The Wind.
I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand this Hollywood leading man!
It moved rather slowly, yet failed to go into the depth for which I was hoping
I’m a huge fan of Clark Gable but there were things in the book I didn’t know. They were surprising and made it even more interesting to read.
If you like Clark Gable, you will find this an interesting read.
If your a Gable fan it is a good read but also shows a side of Hollywood that was, even then, out of realistic living.s
Way too much detail about who directed and produced etc
This is a good tale about a real movie star….
I learned so much about Clark Gable and his interesting life. Including his inattention to his daughter, his only child during his lifetime. That was very surprising.
I have always loved actors from this era. I learned a lot about him and made me feel sorry for the hard life he led.
Since Clark Gable was always a favorite of mine, I thought this would be interesting but it wasn’t all the informative as other books that I have read about Mr. Gable.
Excellent biography
Not an easy read. Too many irrelevant details. Very little meat to the book. Very disappointed
I found it interesting reading about the development of the film industry. Clark Gable was a big star when I was growing up, so following his life revealed the promiscuity of actors both male and female were hinted at in the ‘movie magazines’.
One of better Biographical books I have read about this era in film making
Anything about Clark Gable is interesting.
Never made it past the middle because life was boring and writing was uninspired
was ok, sort of hard to continue reading.
Dreamy Clark Gable, Book NOT SO MUCH. So many parts were repetitions of previously written material. I had to force myself to finish it, and unless something is required reading for school, books should never be this dull. Clark Gable as a man, an actor, a husband, a movie star is compelling. I hadn’t known he got his start on stage. But some of the detail about his earlier life and experiences bogged down the book significantly. It felt like the author went into such detail about the early stage experience that we (as readers) were privy to each and every actor director or even stage hands names. Yes, the author obviously researched Gable’s life, but a lot of that information could have been edited for brevity. I was ultimately disappointed in the book.
Interesting take on old Hollywood. Good details on Clark Gable’s rise to stardom. Very honest.
Well written. Very interesting.
