Clark Gable arrived in Hollywood after a rough-and-tumble youth, and his breezy, big-boned, everyman persona quickly made him the town’s king. He was a gambler among gamblers, a heavy drinker in the days when everyone drank seemingly all the time, and a lover to legions of the most attractive women in the most glamorous business in the world, including the great love of his life, Carole Lombard.… Lombard.
In this well-researched and revealing biography, Warren G. Harris gives an exceptionally acute portrait of one of the most memorable actors in the history of motion pictures—whose intimates included such legends as Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Loretta Young, David O. Selznick, Jean Harlow, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Spencer Tracy, and Grace Kelly—as well as a vivid sense of the glamour and excess of mid-century Hollywood.

A much appreciated look at one of Hollywood’s best known actors. Certainly had his own flaws, particularly with how he treated his women (and child!) but still he left the film world a large group of fine performances.
I though it could have ended pages before it did.
Hollywood during the golden age. Everybody smoked like a chimney, drank like a fish and whored around. Clark was probably at the top echelon of all that. He was a very nice thoughtful man who cared about his friends but man did that guy sleep with a lot of women. Probably due to his lifestyle he died way too young. An entertaining book set during an age where excess was completely and perfectly allowed and encouraged.
Ok but basically pretty borin
Clark Gable was my first movie crush. I enjoyed learning more about him.
Very readable and fun!
Gave me new insight into noe of my favorite actors
I did not like it. I’m sure it is true. But I no longer find him one of my favorite stars.

Things I never knew about Clark Gable….he wasn’t always a “star”…..It’s amazing that he finally made it!
Gable was a favorite of mine
Very interesting but also a lot of info even the reader (who is a bit older ) was a blur.
I liked it….
As a girl, I had a life size poster of Clark Gable taped to the inside of my bedroom door…I can’t tell you how many boys jumped when they caught him out of the corner of their eye. That said, I wasn’t aware of his childhood and enjoyed the book.
