Clark Gable arrived in Hollywood after a rough-and-tumble youth, and his breezy, big-boned, everyman persona quickly made him the town’s king. He was a gambler among gamblers, a heavy drinker in the days when everyone drank seemingly all the time, and a lover to legions of the most attractive women in the most glamorous business in the world, including the great love of his life, Carole Lombard.… Lombard.
In this well-researched and revealing biography, Warren G. Harris gives an exceptionally acute portrait of one of the most memorable actors in the history of motion pictures—whose intimates included such legends as Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Loretta Young, David O. Selznick, Jean Harlow, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Spencer Tracy, and Grace Kelly—as well as a vivid sense of the glamour and excess of mid-century Hollywood.

We all are, in some shape, form, or fashion like Clark Gable. An excellent biography.
I enjoyed the book very much. Was surprised to learn that Clark Gable was his real name and not a Hollywood made up name. Surprised that all actors seemed to be always have “affairs” with someone.
It showed me a world that was much racier and complicated then I would ever believe
Great book about an amazing character, but not near good enough!!!
I really enjoyed reading about Clark Gable. He’s always been one of my favorites, and I was glad to have an in-depth look at his life. I’ve always wondered how people can have so many spouses, but in his case I actually understood it.
Fans of Gable and old Hollywood would enjoy this read.
Read about Loretta and Gable in Call of the Wild so this was a perfect follow up.
Have always loved him. His story was unexpected and sweet. Carole Lombard and he made a terrific couple and one wonders how they might have ended up if she hadn’t gotten on that plane. Old and gray together? Children? How sad to say what might have been.
Always wanted to know something about the man. Definitely a different time and culture than today.
