This book much like the other two it took me awhile to read. I did have to find out what happens so i read the whole series, but it still isnt something i would have ran across on my own. The books are good, but i cant say that they’ll be my new favorites.
I have read all the instalments in ‘The One True Child’ series by L.C. Conn and I think that ‘Claire’ might be my favourite. It was the one that was the most unpredictable – I really did not know where the plot was going from one chapter to the next. Furthermore, I really took to the main protagonist Claire. L.C. Conn has a real ability to write strong female characters that are sure to inspire many younger readers into becoming more independent.
The story follows 17-year-old Claire. She lives with her Uncle Geoff following the tragic death of her parents when she was just 10. She is a talented free runner, which leads her friend Adam’s Dad (Marcus) to ask her to test an innovative new security system. It is in this one night where Claire’s life changes forever – there is something special about her and Marcus definitely knows more than he is letting on. What are his true motives, and how much danger is Claire really in?
New Zealand born Australian author L.C. Conn has discovered that cosmic glow that allows her reader to make sense of the order of the universe, all in the format of a coming of age story. L.C. is a mother who is battling breast cancer and has transformed her life situation into a significant epic – the One True Child Series – which proves to be not only a sensitive examination of the coming of age time of each of our lives, but takes that discovery/recognition sequence into the realm of philosophy, a survey of good versus evil/chaos versus order and the permutations those poles have on each of us. And she manages to tie this all together in the form of young lass Carling.
After grasping our attention with Books 1 and 2 of THE ONE TRUE CHILD series L.C continues to make fine use of artistic covers that draw us into the epic. Stepping into Book 3 we again appreciate the polished quality of her prose: ‘The first few stars of the evening were just starting to twinkle into existence as the last of the sunset’s ruddy glow disappeared in the windows of the surrounding buildings. The bright reflections were soon replaced with the illumination of fluorescent lighting from within. Traffic below snaked through the narrow streets, honking and revving as people tried to get home from their daily lives while the city started to wind up into its own nightlife. From somewhere in the distance Christmas music blared from a shop, competing with the thump, thump, thump beat coming from a nearby bar along with the noise of its patrons. It was the heartbeat and rhythm of the city, which brought out the best in some but the worst in others, reflecting the often grimy and gritty streets that surrounded them. Above these streets and noise stood two teens looking down at the alley, which―from their perspective―looked like the Grand Canyon dividing two identical buildings. Claire leaned out over the abyss. Her hands rested on the low wall, the only barrier to a five-floor drop to the hard, dark pavement below. The large hand of Adam pulled her back to safety, and she shook him off.’
We follow the path of this portion of the story as follows: ‘By the age of 17, Claire thought she knew where her life was heading. She had her best friend, Adam, at her side and the sage guidance of her great-uncle. Until one fateful night when everything changed. Spirited away to save her life, Claire is thrust into the unknown and hidden from all she knows. Life for her had changed forever, and never again could she look at the world the same way. Now she has to ferret out the secrets that she finds herself surrounded by and quickly learn who she can trust and how to use her new-found talents. She must do all this before it is too late and Adam’s father, Marcus, finds her.’
And we remain committed to following this exceptional opening to a world that seduces our imagination and provides sensitivity to that state of awakening.
I reached for the next book by L.C. Conn only because I like the two previous novels by this author. I was thrilled with them surprisingly cos I am not a big fantasy fan. ,,Claire” is a very good book, worth reading. Does it surprises us like other? Yes and no. There are moments when a reader anticipates what might happen, but they are also moments when you feel completely surprised by the turn of events.
Claire(The One True Child Book 3) by L.C. Conn is a great book that features a strong female protagonist named Claire. Claire is 17 and lives with her Great Uncle Geoff, after losing both her parents in a car accident when she was ten. With her faithful friend Adam by her side, she excels at free-running, while Adam films the action and posts it online. Little does Claire know that soon her life will change. When Adam’s dad Marcus asks them to test out his new security system in a building, Claire is on a collision course, and soon is whisked away by her Uncle to an unknown place. This new place is a mystery, and Claire soon finds she has different powers, like most in this new Village. The author has done a great job of creating a sense of urgency in this story, while exploring family dynamics. A fantastic coming of age story mixed with a fantastical plot, this is great reading for the YA audience. Highly recommend for something a little different from an exciting writer.
