Vampires slaughtered my family. No one believed me until I met some new friends, who promised to help me get justice. But nothing prepared me for Marcus Varik.Tall, dark, and mind-numbingly sexy. But he’s also shy, protective, and adorably eccentric.Oh God, I should have never agreed to betray him. Hopefully, it’s not too late to fix my mistake before I lose more people I love. Claiming Marcus is … mistake before I lose more people I love.
Claiming Marcus is the first book in an MM paranormal romance series that has vampires, betrayal, annoying brothers, music, heartbreak, hope, sexy times, and a raven named Ozzie.

Fantastic start to a great series. I recommend them all.
This is a great world that Drake has built. Each book is well laid out, the characters are dimensional and sympathetic, and their personalities are enjoyable and enticing.
If you’ve been looking for a good MM Vampire story, look no more. This is a book one in a series and does have quite a bit of backstory especially at the beginning, plus build-up for the series but it is very well done and keeps you pulled into the story.
I adored Marcus and Ethan. Ethan is a human with spunk and in the beginning, is going for what he thinks is revenge until he meets Marcus and his brothers and realizes they are not the vampires he is looking for but now its too late and he has brought danger to Marcus’ doorstep but can he save him?
I loved this story and it kept me turning the page (well in my case listening. I did it all in one afternoon.) There is lots of action and the romance is a slow burn but so good.
Kenneth Obi gives each character distinguishable voices and each voice tells you of the character’s personality. You can hear the soft but determination in Ethan. The strength and protectiveness in Marcus and the cackle in the evil vampire lady is amazing. His narration keeps you absorbed in the story and you forget all about the boring tasks you are doing.
Storyline 3.5/5
The Varik brothers 5/5
The storyline was iffy at times however I ABSOLUTELY adored the Varik brothers. Broody Marcus, playboy Rafe, nerdy Bel, and spy master Winter, especially the twins, Rafe and Bel.
“He’s just the right amount of good for me, and the perfect amount of bad.”
I loved this book! My heart ached for Ethan, who lost his family to a horrific vampire attack, and I understood his intense desire to seek revenge. I loved Marcus and his brothers and how protective of their mother they were – the woman was mentally imbalanced, how they were protective of humans, and how they made Ethan a part of their family. And I absolutely adored Rafe.
Jocelynn Drake’s writing was superb. She wove a beautiful story of love, loss, pain, and acceptance.
A great start to a new series.
I do like a good vampire story, and this is definitely in that category. Ethan faced horror at the age of ten so was obviously going to be sucked in by new friends with an anti vampire agenda. After meeting Marcus and falling for him very quickly, he saw through the preconceptions and lies he’d been told, and aligned himself firmly with the Variks.
There is a perfect blend of romance, heat and danger in this book. Marcus’ three brothers play a large part in helping with the latter. They are all fascinating characters, but I am pleased that Rafe’s story is next.
The narration by Kenneth Obi is excellent. He had a lot of characters to find voices for; they are all different and suit personalities exactly. I particularly loved Minerva and when it is written that she “cackles”, she actually cackles!
I absolutely love paranormal romances and Vampires…yeah they are definitely my kryptonite. All that hot dark and broody ?? Count me in !! Knowing there are 3 more vampire brothers and that they are getting their own book ?? Hell yeah !!
This story sucked me in from the very first page. I was at the edge of my seat trying to find out more. The mystery and suspense were very well done and it kept me entertained from beginning to end.
The romance between Marcus and Ethan was a bit on the fast side though. Now I always say that I don’t mind insta-love so much when it comes to paranormal book…and I don’t, but in this case, the “I love you’s” came a wee bit fast and unexpected.
One minute Ethan hated everything related to vampires and the next he was claiming his undying love…while they hadn’t really been together yet. I had a bit of trouble adjusting myself to his very fast change of heart. Once I got myself to move past this fact, everything was right again and I could move on. I mean I did want these two together.
This was definitely a great start to a new series and I for one am gonna read all the books that follow. The brothers were awesome and I can’t decide yet who is gonna be my favorite…. Rafe or Winter. I think they are both in the running for being my number 1 😉
I’m already hooked with book 1 of this new series. I loved the world building, the interesting set up for the story and series. I liked the different take on vampires, with their unique abilities, and the setup of vamperic society, and the different factions and politics that go with it. I also liked that becoming a vampire comes with a very real risk and no guarantee of surviving the change.
I also loved the Varik siblings. Their relationship and banter felt very much like siblings. Their relationship with their mother and attempts to protect her was very bittersweet. This story is very much about family, which I liked, and not about the one you’re born into but the one you make. I also loved that all the brothers are musicians, as I enjoy stories in which music plays a decent size part. I like Aiden and his part in their family. He’s had such a rough time all around. Ozzie deserves a mention too, and looking forward to seeing more of him in future stories.
I really felt for Ethan with his tragic loss at the beginning of the story. I thought the author did a great job in keeping me guessing as to was responsible for his family’s death. I enjoyed Ethan and Marcus’ growing attraction and relationship. Marcus’ ability is very cool. I loved how, despite Ethan having to take on a different role in one part of the story, Marcus makes it very clear to him that they are equals.
The action scenes are edge-of-seat reading, and kept me turning pages.
I’m looking forward to reading each brother’s story. I loved what I saw of them in this story, they’re very much individuals with their own quirks. I liked how Ethan held his own with them, and gives as good as he gets with the banter.
Claiming Marcus is an excellent start to the Lords of Discord series. The vampire world the author has built within our world is rich in detail and rife with danger and intrigue.
Marcus is a strong character, taking the health and wellbeing of his family as his ongoing burden to bear. He is lonely, though. Marcus was raised with prejudice many years ago. It is always at the forefront of his mind when he ponders his desires and abject loneliness. He is a juxtaposition of innocent and worldly. Sweet and stern. Artistic and deadly.
Ethans’ need to find the vampire that massacred his family leads him to Marcus and his family. He is also a strong character with a definite sense of honor that keeps him from endangering any that are innocent.
These two learn, over time, to love and trust each other, even as they keep their secrets. I like that the author gave them this time together. They did not need immediate physical satisfaction if they were to grow into each other. But their passion is intense and gives some spice to the story.
There is a smooth flow from scene to scene and action to action that kept my attention from the moment I opened the book. I kept a feeling of satisfaction even as I made my way through the pages, having found trust in this author quickly. I don’t have the words to tell you why I feel this way, but I do.
Claiming Marcus is the first I’ve read by this author, and I look forward to more.
Family is everything!
Marcus has been alive for more than a century and a half! He and his brothers all became vampires because of their mother!
Ethan’s whole family was murdered by vampires, or so he thought! He wants to know who killed them hence the quest for revenge! He allied himself with a group that he thought would help him exact his revenge, but he was very wrong.
Will Ethan learn that not all vampires are out to kill humans? Marcus and his brothers are a different clan of vampires. They are peaceful, respectful and protective of their family.
This is an amazing start of a new series. It is full of action, fun and sexy times. I love Marcus and Ethan, they are both sweet and beautiful! But I also love Rafe, Bel and Winter. I can’t wait for their stories! Congratulations Ms. Jocelynn Drake, another amazing story!
Marcus Varik is Ethan’s enemy and Ethan is set to destroy him, that is until he meets Marcus and his family. Everything changes for Ethan. This story had me at the edge of my seat..it’s filled with danger, action, friendship, and love. Marcus and Ethan are sweet and sexy hot together. You’ll also fall in love with them and the other Varik brothers. I can’t wait for the next book
Ah, but how I love this new world that Jocelynn Drake has brought her readers to! Yes, it’s dark because of the paranormal aspect of the story, but Drake manages this delicate balance of heavier elements of the story, such as murders and conspiracies, alongside lighter touches in the form of witty banter between the main characters, Marcus and Ethan, and among the Varik siblings and their closest allies. I love how we get this rich story with depth to it and fabulous character development while we’re introduced to the peripheral characters who will become the featured “headliners” as the Lords of Discord series goes forward. Aside from that, there’s this story arc regarding the societal aspect of the vampire world and how its become overly politicized and has been affected by corruption and greed, leading to a power-grab situation. Readers get more than “mere” romance, and with Drake’s writing, I’m already eager for much more. Here’s to me continuing to be impressed! Five stars for Claiming Marcus.
I just snatched this book without even reading the blurb. Because, duh! It’s Jocelynn Drake!
Honestly, after the first chapter, seeing how his family was slaughtered, I’d of expected Ethan’s older self to be a hardened, cold vampire hunter. Imagine the amazing surprise to see a sweet, gentle young man, with a heart of gold. Yes,he’s still hurting and searching for revenge, but that doesn’t mean he’s blind to the fact that vampires could also be good.
Ethan certainly wasn’t ready to be utterly fascinated with Marcus. I would have been, too. Can you imagine an almost two centuries old vampire who’s shy, socially inept and completely out of his depth in how to act around Ethan?
I loved them together and I was anxious to see how they would work things out between them once all their secrets were out. I shouldn’t have worried, because their connection is strong enough to overcome doubts, lies and threats.
It was definitely bad timing for them to find each other in a dangerous political situation, where they can’t distinguish friends from foes. The violent environment added to the thrill of the story. And it was awesome to see the Varik clan stick together. With their different personalities,at times endearing and at times irritating one another, but always a close knit family unit.
was captivating. I loved the mystery, the characters and the romance. Just loved it!
