As the son of a formidable Breed warrior, Aric Chase has been devoted to the Order all his life. With his training completed, all he needs is one successful mission before he can join the fight to destroy the Order’s chief nemesis, Opus Nostrum. His rare ability to daywalk lands Aric an assignment in Montreal, where he learns he’s to be teamed with another new recruit, a beautiful, but tough-as-nails Breedmate named Kaya Laurent.
Independent and driven, Kaya wants nothing more than to become a full-fledged member of the Order. Having grown up in squalor and neglect on the streets of Montreal, she longs for the close-knit family she’s found during her training to be a warrior. Eager to prove herself, she is thrilled to be given the chance at a key operation–even if she must share the mission with an arrogant, far-too-attractive Breed male who’s practically Order royalty.
Their unwanted partnership soon erupts into a desire neither of them can resist. But when Kaya’s past reaches out from the shadows to call her back, she must decide between protecting a dark alliance that could shatter her dreams of joining the team and a truth that could not only forfeit Aric’s faith in her, but bring the enemy right to the Order’s door.

Aric is from a powerful family inside the Order. He and has friend have just come back from a mission and are redirected to Montreal. Aric is a daywalker and they need him for a mission. Kaya is a Breedmate and wants to become a member of the Order. She can touch someone and know what they are thinking. They need to find out if a rich man is in league with Opus and Kaya and Aric go undercover to find out. The sparks between Kaya and Aric are explosive but Kaya’s past could keep her from becoming a warrior.
A vampire and a breedmate, who neither want to settle down with a mate and are both warriors. Action, suspense and gore.

Another of the new kids on the Midnight Breed block is getting his story. This time its sometimes arrogant, Aric Chase, son of Sterling and Tavia- a previous couple in the series, who gets his story. I haven’t exactly liked Aric up until now so I was curious to see if the author would change my mind while delivering another of her action packed stories.
Claimed in Shadows is book fifteen in the Midnight Breed series. In a pinch, I suppose someone could read this out of order, but the series works best read to get them one after the other. If you don’t want to go all the way back to the beginning, I suppose you could get away with starting at Edge of Dawn for this second season of the series.
Aric is one of the second generation of the series. I’ve practically seen him and his sister and the other younger group grow up and now its their turn to become members of the order. Aric’s been something of a pain in the rear through his sister’s story and at other times so I was ambivalent about this one going in. It turned out that I was actually okay with him. He turned out to have a sweet and kind side especially when it came to Kaya, the heroine of the book.
Now, Kaya was a sharp-edged driven heroine. She’s tough and yet oh so vulnerable. She’s a street kid who grew up hard and has latched onto The Order with everything she has to claim them as her surrogate family. Mira is her idol and best friend and Nikolai and his breedmate and Kellan and the others in the Montreal Head Quarters are hers and she doesn’t want to lose them so she’s keeping her dangerous secrets.
Unfortunately, someone else within the Order itself is handing over the playbook to the evil Opus Nostrum group so the Order can’t seem to get ahead. I figured out who the traitor was early on and kept impatiently waiting for the rest of them to catch up.
I liked Kaya and Aric together even though they had to get past her pushing him away and being so scared to connect. As much as I wanted her to get past her issues, I totally got them because of her past.
Truth is, I felt like this one was off pace for me. There were exciting moments and the build of the romance, but at the same time, there was something missing. The intensity in the players, I guess. Things weren’t bad in fact they were good, but just need some oomph if that makes sense. And, maybe I felt like they were chasing their tails for the series plot. For a few books now, there hasn’t been much forward progress and they are back on their heels, reacting more than taking action, a lot. I think my favorite part was reconnecting with the older characters from the series. This I loved.
The narrator, Hillary Huber, was new to me. I thought she was pretty good with one caveat. Her male voices were either squeaky teenager for Aric or gravely for the others though she did rock Niko’s Russian. I thought she was great on the ladies and the accents since she had to do Montreal and French Canadian with Kaya. Her timing and hitting the emotions of the book were great. I’d definitely listen to other stuff she narrates.
All in all, it was moderately engaging. I do like this series and anticipate each installment and I want to see them take down the evil Opus Nostrum and their crowd. Vampire fans who haven’t gotten the chance should definitely give the Midnight Breed series a go.
Great read! I love this author. I only wish I could get more excited about the next generation and their books. This was an excellent read but wasn’t memorable to me. I liked the characters, but I didn’t love them.
3 stars – I liked it
Aric Chase is a daywalkers who has been assigned to Montreal to help with a mission against Opus Nostrum. What he doesn’t expect is to start to fall for his teammate, the beautiful Breedmate Kaya Laurent.
Aric and Kaya’s story was a fast paced one with a lot of action. While I didn’t like Aric in previous books, I was surprised by how much I liked him in this one. He may be an overbearing brother but he is also a dedicated and protective warrior. Aric has lived a life of privilege and wealth but he isn’t an arrogant and entitled man, which is good because then I really wouldn’t have liked him. Aric and Kaya had completely different upbringings but they both had the drive to protect people that is necessary to be in the Order.
Kaya was a strong and dedicated heroine who has used her upbringing to become a better person. She never let her past hold her back or trap her in a situation. I loved her determination to help people. These two are still newbies for the Order but they still do a good job at holding their own on missions, especially when it comes to dealing with unexpected problems. There was some development with the fight against Opus Nostrum in this book and it finally is starting to feel like progress is being made.
Overall, this was a great continuation of the story and a good couple. Also I loved that we got to see some of the previous couples from the original Order reunited again.
Trigger Warnings: Kaya’s mother was a drug addict and abusive. References to being abused by her mother’s boyfriends.
Claimed in Shadows by Lara Adrian is fantastic. With this novel we get a closer look at the Daywalkers. Thanks to these select few Breed members the rest of the Breed will have a fighting chance against their enemies. This book like all of Lara’s Midnight Breed books is full of action, power, heart, betrayal, heartache and love. With every book I’m more excited for the next.
Claimed in Shadows by Lara Adrian is the fifteenth book in her Midnight Breed series. I loved Aric and Kaya’s love story!
Aric Chase has been devoted to the Order from birth, but he needs one successful mission to prove that he is ready to join the fight to destroy Opus Nostrum. Teaming up with Breedmate Kaya Laurent is a great partnership during this mission and during their downtime also.
Now Kaya is trying to keep her past from destroying the family she has found in the team and her relationship with Aric without leading the enemy right to their door.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
