Times are hard in Montana in the mid-1800s, and when Nettie finds herself impoverished, desperate, and alone after the death of her husband, she flees the town of Helena to escape the clutches of the local saloon owner. But living off the land quickly proves much more difficult than she’d hoped, and after days without food she resorts to stealing from Jack Abrams, a gruff mountain man and trapper … trapper who lives a secluded, uncomplicated life in the woods.
Jack doesn’t take kindly to being stolen from and when he catches her red-handed, Nettie ends up lying naked over his knee for a long, hard spanking. To her surprise, however, after her punishment Jack offers her food and shelter in return for cooking, cleaning, and doing as she is told. But Nettie is determined to never rely on a man again, and with a belly full of food and renewed determination, she abandons him to take another shot at living in the woods on her own.
Jack knows the headstrong girl won’t survive without his help, especially when she chooses a grizzly’s winter cave as her shelter, and he can’t stand by and idly watch her demise. When his irritation with her foolish pride boils over, he decides it is time to show her how thoroughly a man can dominate a woman silly enough to venture into the woods alone. Jack’s stern chastisement and bold mastery of her body leave Nettie begging for more, but is she truly ready to give up her freedom to be claimed by the mountain man?

Audio version
The only complaint I have for this story is it’s short.
The narration on the other hand is ok, if a little bland. Several times I almost fell asleep listening to it. I also don’t think he got the voices across very well. I wish I had the e-book version.
Would I listened to this again? No not unless it was redone with a different narrator, read it though yes.

This is a terrific historic western romance with plenty of heart. Jack finds Nettie when he sets a trap for whatever has been stealing his chickens, and when he finds out she’s determined to live on her own in the wilderness, he has to deal with his conflicting emotions. He admires her decision to be self-sufficient without resorting to the usual distasteful choices that women face, but he also fears for her safety and survival. He needs her to learn to obey his rules that he teaches her just so she’ll have a chance to survive, but he also recognizes that she needs to feel some control in her life.
Nettie has learned that the only man she could trust was her husband, who died in the war. She resents Jack for being right that she can’t survive by herself, but she also knows better than to trust her heart and her future to another man.
As they work together to get through the long winter, their romance heats up enough to warm all of Montana. When spring comes, though, they each struggle with choosing whether to protect their hearts or risk it all for the chance at forever.
The love story is so well-crafted that it transcends the usual erotic/spanking genre. There are deep issues of character and emotional strength addressed here, and the writing sparkles with so much detail you feel as though you’re in the Montana wilderness yourself. The author really makes sure that the reader cares about the characters, and about what happens to them.
Enjoyed reading this story
Nettie does not want to be beholding to any man after her husband was killed in the war, life turned bad she became a prostitute and she hated it. When she could not stand it anymore she ran away into the woods.
Nettie was stealing from Trapper Jack, only Trapper Jack set a Trap for the thief. Trapper Jack hauled Nettie into his cabin, stripping her of her wet clothes, wrapping her in a fur by the fire, and then feeding her in silence. Nettie had been living in a cave the last two months and hadn’t eaten the last three days. He then put her over his knee and spanked her hard. Put her to bed, climbed in next to her rolled over and went to sleep. This is The Very Basic Beginning I loved this story, a very suspenseful romantic story you just can’t put down. I was given this in a free book giveaway and I voluntarily leave this review
I was wanting to find a lighter and happier read and browsed through my ‘to read’ list and finally picked up Claimed by the Mountain Man and was soooo happy I did.
Both characters have a past that has shaped them and for their own separate reasons have fled into the wilderness to seek solace, but it is within each others arms their hearts at long last begin to heal.
Nettie is determined to stand on her own two feet despite the imminent threat of starvation which I admire. However one of the reasons I enjoyed this book was because of the carefully crafted hero in Trapper Jack. How he fights his natural inclination to swoop Nettie up and protect her from the harshness of the wilderness and gives her the tools to spread her wings with the understanding if she cannot manage she WILL come to him for help or on her bottom be it. Unknown to Nettie, Jack doesn’t leave her to her own devices but hidden amongst the trees judges her progress under his watchful and protective gaze. Jack allows Nettie to come to her own conclusion that she will not be able to survive the onslaught of winter and from a platform of mutual respect they are able to build their relationship.
