Every eight years, the men of the mainland must deliver a sacrifice to the giants of the Black Isles to safeguard an ancient truce… A young virgin is chosen to maintain the peace. Broc has reigned as king of the Black Isles for seven years. Seven years without a queen by his side or in his bed. Seven years without an heir to guard his throne and carry on his bloodline. As much as he hates the … bloodline. As much as he hates the idea, now it’s his turn to take the human sacrifice as a bride.
As soon as he sees her, he begins to realize: this soft fragile human might just be what he’s been missing all his life.
Eighteen-year-old Kelly is next to be sent to her doom. She knows little of her captors, except the terrifying and violent stories she’s heard all her life. But sometimes, stories are just that… stories. Could it be that there is more to her new home and its people than what the village elders had wanted her to believe?
Kelly is about to discover a whole new way of life on the Black Isles. Including how easy it is to fall in love with a super-human man she once feared. And how quickly her new dream could turn to ashes if she isn’t careful.
Claimed by the King is the first in Lorelei Moone’s fantasy romance series, Shifters of Black Isle. Shifters, magic and relatable characters; set in a mysterious, distant land, where anything seems possible, and yet all its inhabitants hold dear could be destroyed in an instant.

This book has a little bit of everything. There’s fantasy which may spark your imagination. There’s a paranormal twist with the addition of shifters – although that part is a little understated. You don’t really know at what point in time this takes place but I think historical fiction when listening. Speaking of listening, Mr. Turner was a perfect choice for this book.
While listening to him, I thought of our main character Broc. He made it easy to picture what our hero might look and sound like. Broc seemed to be a man with plenty of patience. I didn’t mind that we didn’t have a female voice for Kelly. We still get to experience who she is and what she’s going through.
I was happily listening to Mr. Turner when I heard a nasty word – Epilogue. A little surprised how quickly it came up. It felt like a lot was missing but I’m going to assume that what is lost might be found in the next book. If not, my mind will have to fill in any blanks but I’m hoping that won’t happen since I’m sure I won’t do any justice to the people of the Black Isle.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Wish it was longer!
Very good book
Unpredictable. Strong male character
Too much happened too fast. Needed more build up but other than that pretty good.
I like this story. It started a touch slowly but the tension built as I read. I had to buy the next in the series and I’m reading that now.
Loved it
Nice,easy, fun read
I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down until I finished it and got the next in the series.
So this book on my book is just under 100 pages. Even though it was on the shorter side, the author still got plenty of details explained so that I didnt feel like anything was not understood. Not too detailed with the steamy scenes until towards the end and its 1 scene, so if alot of steamy scenes throw you off as a reader, you can read this one happily. There is a small amount of action, otherwise this book was an even flowing plot line. Which isn’t a bad thing, but I am left wanting more. I plan to read on to find out what more happens with the island characters.
It was a historical novel with a twist! A fun, read
I enjoyed reading it. The characters were engaging.
fun read, looking forward to book 2
If you had to become a sacrifice in order for your people to survive another eight years in your village, would you? That seems like a huge risk, but when you are thinking about your father and brother potentially falling victim to giants, what more can you do? Moone has a fast-paced, entertaining story with Claimed by the King.
Broc Bearclaw is the ruler of the Black Isles and he must take in as many outsiders as possible in order to allow his people to thrive and survive against the oncoming war with the sea people. His people are also pressuring him to take a wife and produce an heir. When Broc sees Kelly for the first time on that wooden post, a sacrifice to his people until the next eight years, he is enraptured by her beauty and immediately feels connected to her. He wants passion. He wants to protect her. But, his people suggest that an oncoming threat is looming over the Black Isles and they can’t help believing that Kelly has something to hide which can be a danger to them all.
Moone has a quick read with this first installment. The novella is filled with a great backstory and terrific character development; however, the romance is a very fast-paced. The author is assuming the characters have an instant draw to each other based on lore of finding ones soulmate. The story is written well and easy to read. If you are a reader of paranormal romance, you may want to try this one. Since this is the first installment, the reader can jump right in.
This book was downloaded by Turning Another Page from Book Funnel and in no way affects the honesty of this review. We provide a four-star rating for Claimed by the King by Lorelei Moone.
I received an ARC from this very masterful Author LORELEI MOONE. In exchange for very honest opinion of her CLAIMED BY THE KING BBW BEAR SHIFTER FANTASY ROMANCE SHIFTERS OF BLACK ISLE BOOK 1. This is my very honest opinion of her outstanding -out of this world -edge of your seat/page turner of a story. One that you can’t get enough of. You are held captive once you turn the very first page. This story is so magically writen you find yourself transported to the Black Isle itself. You become one with the characters & scenes. Brok , Kelly and the rest of them are written so well described and defined. The reader is able is picture them right before their eyes. As for the scenes , they are so realistic. You feel you are apart of them aong with seeing them. Ms Moone creativity is exceptional. The way in which she has taken pen to paper to bring this story life before your eyes is truly remarkable. One that you have you have to read and experience for yourself.
So let me begin telling you CLAIMED BY THE KING… As our story opens we find Kelly preparing to sacrificed to herself to the giants on Black Isles. The town folk every 8 years have to choose a young maiden to be sacrifice. The deal is that they villagers leave maidens tied up -say thier good-byes and walk away. This was my first book by Lorelei, and this is the first in a new PNR series about shifters, not just one type though, all different ones, which was kinda unique. It was a good read and I enjoyed the story line.
A village girl gets sacrificed to the giants on the Island once every 8 years, this time it was Kelly’s turn. The giants need new blood to enable their bloodline to continue, and so a girl is taken once every 8 years across to their Island. Broc is the king and he is claiming Kelly to be his bride and hopefully produce and heir.
I enjoyed the story, but the chemistry between Broc and Kelly seemed to be lacking, there was not enough passion for my tastes, it seem to be a bit like an old fashioned tale rather than a hot shifter romance. Hopefully further books in this series will correct this, but I’m looking forward to continuing the story.
This book makes me so excited for this new series. I’m a long-time fan of Ms Moone & Claimed by the King holds true to her skills as a world-builder. The characters are colourful & charismatic. I loved the story- Kelly thought she was going to be a slave but things didn’t go the way she expected. I thoroughly enjoyed the development of the relationship between her & Broc although things don’t go smoothly for them which makes for an exciting and engaging read.
Terrified Kelly Chaslain is tied up as a sacrifice to a post on the beach. No young woman has ever been seen again when they have been sacrificed in this way. The giants from the Black Isles claim them as payment for protecting the mainland.
Broc Bearclaw is King of the Black Isles. They are shifters of many different types, and are more or less confined to the Islands to protect their secrets. Always on the lookout against their enemies. He dislikes the practice of taking the women but it is necessary.
A magical fantasy romance with characters full of potential. This is a full story on it’s own but starts a series of what looks to be follow on series.
Great fun, I look forward to reading the next one. (I think I’ve guessed who the lead characters will be).
New book in a New series by this author. I have loved every book this author has put out and this one was no different.
We get a young woman who in all respects has been lied to her entire life. So when it’s her turn to be the sacrifice she takes it with no fight.
Every eight years a human has to be sacrificed per a contract between humans and the savages but are they truly savages?
There is an instant attraction between Kelly and Broc which both find weird but she eases into her place in the kingdom until those who are close to Broc threaten everything they are trying to build.
Can Broc keep her safe? Or is she his savior?
I can not wait to see what happens next as I know Broc’ family member is keeping a secret of sorts.
Great start to a new series! Kelly was a fantastic character and so was Broc. Kelly was chosen as a sacrifice at the very beginning and ends up on an island of shifters. Lots of fun as the story progressed and the secondary characters were also well developed. This was a fun and a fast read that kept my interest and I am now looking forward to reading the next book. I am voluntarily reviewing an arc I received
