Really liked this series about Ella and the wish godmother.
A lot of mystery,suspense,action,drama with a romance.
All the characters for great and help make the story.
Glad it all in a set now.
A great different telling of a fairy tale.
Voluntarily reviewed.
I was excited about the blurb, but I’m not as much of a paranormal reader as a fantasy. Any doubts were quickly erased though as I was captivated by the story, and quickly found myself wanting to know more about the characters and their lives!
I really loved Dex and his friends, and enjoy Elle’s fascination and reluctance around them. I also enjoyed Elle’s relationship with Sienna her step-sister. I really enjoyed the writing and world-building, and am excited to read more, especially after that ending leaves the next one wide open! I’m enjoying the magic system so far, and hope it’s explained more as the series continues. I also like that the retelling includes fae, vampires, and shifters, and I’m curious to see how the shifters fit into the story, and to learn more about the different sides and the Alliance’s true aim!
All six episodes of the “City of Wishes” in one edition? Absolutely yes!!!
I’ve read and reviewed each episode individually, and I was hooked in the story from the start. There’s so much going on in this story, I wouldn’t do it justice by reviewing it as a boxed set, so I’m copying here my individual reviews.
City of Wishes 1: The Memory Thief
An imaginative retelling of Cinderella! In a world where magic is highly valued and humans are considered less than dirt, Elle, although human, has a great secret: she has magic. Where did she get it? She doesn’t know. And why is she hunted by paranormal creatures? Enter the world of the City of Wishes and get immersed in an alternate world, so much like ours and yet so different and full of magic!
City of Wishes 2: The Vampire Trap
Elle’s adventures continue in this second installment of the City of Wishes. Still enslaved by her stepmother, she tries to find more information on why the vampires are after her. Rachel Morgan continues expanding the universe of her City of Wishes. As the story unfolds, the reader gets hooked in a whole new world full of magic and yet so similar to ours. Secrets remain secrets, and the plot thickens.
City of Wishes 3: The Moonlight Masquerade
Secrets upon secrets, mysteries upon mysteries… Although we get some answers to a few of the secrets from the previous installments, there are still many to be revealed. This third installment in the City of Wishes will have you at the edge of your seat! Will Elle go to the ball? And what will be the price she has to pay? No wish is free when the Godmother is involved. And what will happen if Elle doesn’t pay the price?
City of Wishes 4: The Eternal Night
More plot twists, more character development, more universe expanding!!! The fourth episode of the City of Wishes has all these and more! Elle is finally free, but at what cost? What will the Godmother ask her to do to repay her for granting her a wish?
City of Wishes 5: The Starlight Quest
After the events of the previous episode, Ella, finally free from her stepmother’s slavery, has to embark on a quest to satisfy the condition of the Godmother’s granting her another wish. The plot thickens, astounding revelations come to light, questions are answered and more questions arise, while Ella with her friends enter a magical forest in search of something that could change the world. An excellent episode, fast-paced, well-written, with great descriptions and well-developed characters.
City of Wishes 6: The Everafter Wish
A magical ending to a magical series! If you’ve followed Ella’s adventures so far, then you’ll definitely want to see how the story concludes. Get ready for plenty of action, unexpected twists and turns, revelations and of course a happily ever after. Everything is tied up nicely, but are there hints of a spin-off or is it just my wishful thinking?
Overall, the City of Wishes serial was one of the best and most well-written fairy tale retellings I’ve read. I highly recommend it to all fans of Cinderella and fairy tale retellings with a twist!
Leave it too Rachel to twist Cinderella’s story into something more….incredible! I’ve always loved the Cinderella story as a child, but as an adult, Rachel’s version is darker and gives me chill’s, the good kind!
In a world ruled by Fae, Vampires and Shifter’s, this unique take on an old classic gets a shiny new look and a storyline that is riveting, strong and fun! With intriguing world building and either devilishly good looking Fae or just devilish characters, this is a wicked good read, I couldn’t put down
This series is so addicting! I’m loving Elle and Dex, they make a great team! The ups and downs are incredible but what else could you expect from the glorious Rachel Morgan!
This was an amazing story that will keep you reading until the wee hours. The author did a wonderful job with the world building and creating deep relatable characters.
Imagine your typical Cinderella story except with Fae and Vampires. Ella is a human girl in a world where humans are viewed as lesser beings and normally enslaved. After her father died she is marked with the slave charm by her Fae stepmother. All she wants is for her and her stepsister to finally be free. While trying to obtain said freedom she meets some surprisingly helpful Fae and Vamps along the way. One of those Fae just so happen to be the Fae prince. But when all seems lost she seeks out help from the one person who can grant any wish. I loved how the godmother was portrayed in this story. You always have to be careful what you wish for and there always seems to be a twist. You are left wondering the whole series if she is good or evil. Every two weeks I was patiently waiting for the next “episode” to come and even though I loved the ending, I still wish for more. I highly recommend you read this, as well as all her other books. Trust me you will not be disappointed.
THE MEMORY THEIF
I was very excited to start on a new series by Rachel and I loved it. I love the writing style and this book was so much fun to read. I loved the introduction into a new world and its new characters. It was fast paced and very easy to read.
I loved this Cinderella re-telling and all the little parts in the story that made it different and very enjoyable. I’m excited to see what becomes of Elle, Dex and the other guys, I loved all their interactions with each other.
I also loved the idea of every race living together in the same world and knowing everything about each other. I can’t wait to read more and see what happens next in the series
THE VAMPIRE TRAP
I loved this second episode and getting to know more about Dex and Elle, I think they are such a great team working together. I loved their connection and interactions. There was always something happening, be it with Elle and Dex or her stepmother and stepsisters, which kept it entertaining from beginning to end.
After that ending I am dying to know what happens next with them both and the decision Elle with go with
THE MOONLIGHT MASQUERADE
This series is quickly becoming one of my most favourite Cinderella retellings. It’s full of great characters and an amazing storyline that I love getting lost in. There’s twists and turns in almost every second chapter that made complete sense. There were a couple big mysteries in this one that had me putting the book down just so it could sink in and I could get over the shock before continuing. Can’t wait for the next episode especially after that ending.
THE ETERNAL NIGHT
I loved getting to know more and more of these characters especially the Godmother and Azriel, and finding out more about Elle’s past (what a surprise those things were!). I love the growing connection and relationship between Elle and Dex and I can’t wait to know more after that ending, I’m dying to know what the Godmother has in store next. A very good continuation in this series
THE STARLIGHT QUEST
I loved this episode and the quest Elle and the others went on. Although, for me, not as much happened as I thought it would, I found it still enjoyable and a definite page turner just to find out what would happen. I loved the Godmother and her tricks, I’m excited to find out how her plans turn out in the next and final book. I’m really hoping Dex and Elle get their well deserved happy ending
THE EVERAFTER WISH
This series has easily now become one of my favourite Cinderella retellings so I couldn’t wait to get stuck in to the last book and getting the final answers I’ve been desperate for, and I loved it.
I think Rachel has ended this series perfectly, the only other thing that I would’ve loved is to have more of Elle and Dex! I thought they were perfect for each other and the way fate (ummm someone?) brought them together.
I loved finding out what the Godmother’s endgame was, and knowing it wasn’t what I expected.
A very good series from start to finish.
