A New York Times bestseller!Ever since Cass almost drowned (okay, she did drown, but she doesn’t like to think about it), she can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead . . . and enter the world of spirits. Her best friend is even a ghost. So things are already pretty strange. But they’re about to get much stranger. When Cass’s parents start hosting a TV show about the world’s … start hosting a TV show about the world’s most haunted places, the family heads off to Edinburgh, Scotland. And she’ll have to learn fast. The city of ghosts is more dangerous than she ever imagined.
#1 NYT bestselling author Victoria Schwab delivers a thrillingly spooky and action-packed tale of hauntings, history, mystery, and the bond between friends (even if that friend is a ghost . . .).

This middle grade series starter was full of adventure for Cassidy and Jacob. I loved the descriptions of the Edinburgh setting and the history of some landmarks that was woven in. I look forward to reading more of Cassidy and Jacob’s adventures. I also hope we see more of Lara Jean.
What a fun story. I didn’t know this was a middle grade story when I started (totally missed that) but once I started I was enjoying it so much I continued. This story has, adventure, action, frightening moments (for younger readers), humor and history. Love that all the ghost stories and places are real. I will be reading the next book. Oh, my one dissapointment is that the cat isn’t a major character, I mean he’s on the cover so… LOL. Recommended.
This was really fun and only makes me want to visit Edinburgh more!!!
Cass almost drowns and was rescued by Jacob, a ghost. Ever since, Cass has been able to go between the living and the world of spirits. She and Jacob are best friends.
Cass’ parents who are authors land a job hosting a TV show about haunted places around the world.
I loved they visit Edinburgh and I love all the haunted places they explore. It is getting more dangerous for Cass, though as her gift seems to be pulling her in at times without her choosing.
I loved she got to learn more about herself and the ghosts and her gift when she meets Lara who is like Cass.
It was a spooky, fun read and I can’t wait to read the next one.
City of Ghosts
(Cassidy Blake #1)
by Victoria Schwab
Wow, I didn’t know this was a middle grade book when I ordered it from the library but I would say it’s a book for middle grade and up! I enjoyed it so much! I am a senior and I found it thrilling, entertaining, suspense sprinkled throughout, and bits of humor. It’s also about family and friendship.
Cassidy is our gal of the story. She drowns then comes back, saved by Jacob who is a ghost. Since her accident, she can see and hear ghost. She can also go between, a place that shows ghosts in their time as they were about to die. She has to be careful there! Fortunately she has her best friend Jacob who is not just a friend but her protector.
Cassidy is looking forward to a long summer at the beach cabin where there isn’t any ghosts. But her parents have a surprise, their ghost novels are picked up by a network and they will be travelling to haunted places to film. What happens when she goes to the city of ghosts in Scotland she will remember forever! Very thrilling!
Very enjoyable entertainment and just the right trepidation was added for a great creepy factor.
I can not get enough of Victoria’s books lately, and this is one of the best in my opinion! It has the perfect amount of scary and funny. The story line is amazing and the setting is haunting. I just love the characters too! Overall, you have got to read this book!
Overall, this book was a lot of fun! It met all of my expectations for a creepy/ghostly middle-grade novel. It would make a great pick during Halloween. I’m interested enough to continue on in the series.

At first I thought this might be a book I could read sporadically…pick up and put down. But no — I was pulled in and couldn’t let go. As soon as I finished, I started book 2 of the series and now am desperate for book 3.
A story I definitely would have loved to have when I was in junior high. Looking forward to book two.
Victoria Schwab wrote an intriguing MG book called City of Ghosts narrated by the charming lead character Cass. After a “near death” experience, Cassidy sees ghosts, especially an endearing fellow named Jacob who saved her life. Her parents write books about spirits, but they don’t know about their daughter’s experiences “beyond the veil.” The family takes a job in Edinboro, Scotland where Cass is not only enriched with British-isms. She meets a young woman who also is an “inbetweener” who explains the reason for the tug to explore the realm of the dead. While in the city rich in history (and J.K. Rowling’s famed coffee shop where she penned the famed Harry Potter books), Cass also attracts the attention of a malevolent creature intent on collecting children’s life threads – especially Cass’s.
The book is well written with a moderate pace. Ms. Schwab creates a chilling setting interspersed with humor. It is easy to like the main characters.
I read this with my two young readers, and they enjoyed it tremendously.
Such a fun read! And spooky in all the right places! Not just for kids – anyone will enjoy this story. 🙂
A Wonderful read….. the Adventure Continues!
I really enjoyed this book, it is adventurous in a ghostly sort of way.
