“[An] irresistible invitation to share the lives of people who believe in enduring values.”—Detroit Free PressIt began with Benny Hogan and Eve Malone, growing up, inseparable, in the village of Knockglen. Benny—the only child, yearning to break free from her adoring parents. . . . Eve—the orphaned offspring of a convent handyman and a rebellious blueblood, abandoned by her mother’s wealthy … by her mother’s wealthy family to be raised by nuns.
Eve and Benny—they knew the sins and secrets behind every villager’s lace curtains . . . except their own.
It widened at Dublin, at the university where Benny and Eve met beautiful Nan Mahlon and Jack Foley, a doctor’s handsome son. But heartbreak and betrayal would bring the worlds of Knockglen and Dublin into explosive collision. Long-hidden lies would emerge to test the meaning of love and the strength of ties held within the fragile gold bands of a. . . Circle Of Friends.

I love reading for the season and/or holiday. Since it’s the week of St. Patrick’s Day, I’m feeling a wee bit Irish! Anything by Maeve Binchy is on my favorite’s list, but this one is probably my favorite. I’m actually reading “Ireland: a Novel” by Frank Delaney which is about a story teller in Ireland in the 1950’s. Hope you take time to look for …
Great story.
I read this book years ago and loved it, will re-read it soon. Maeve Binchy was an amazing writer and a great storyteller. I’m sorry there won’t be anymore.
A coming of age story, of the only daughter of two much older, very Catholic parents! In other words, she could not get away with anything! How her low self-esteem held her back, yet, through a devastating heartache she finds the man of her dreams! He will never be a Hollywood posterboy, yet, he will always love her, never cheat on her, and treat …
This was the first book that I read by the author and it made me a fan of hers. I have since read everything she has published. Fell in love with the characters and felt like I had been transported to the Irish countryside.
This is one of my favorite Maeve Binchey books. It is a coming of age story told from the viewpoint of the young adults, as well as their parents who are having to learn to let them go.
I loved how she created such real characters. I really felt for Benny and Eve. This was a great book and I would especially recommend it for teen girls. I loved the book ending and was frustrated that the movie changed it. However, Maeve is definitely a favourite of mine.
Rich characters and realistic settings make you feel as if you’ve walked in and become part of the group. That’s Maeve. I miss her. She writes books you can get lost in – as it should be.
Great setting, wonderful characters, my kind of escape.
Another newly discovered author for me. And what a find! Absolutely love her writing style, and again I feel so attached to the people and storyline, making this a firm favourite. Another great book
I read this book a very long time go but remember loving the characters and the storyline.
