Scratching out a living in a land recovering from war and a hostile takeover, Cinderella—an orphaned, destitute duchess—is desperate to save her lands and servants in spite of the terrible taxes placed upon her by the Erlauf queen—even if it means she must don servants’ clothes and work like a commoner. Her sacrifices aren’t enough, and when a mountain of debt is levied against her, she is given … is given one season to produce the funds. Cinderella realizes it is only a matter of time before she loses everything she has struggled to protect, and it seems that all is lost until she is befriended by the debonair Colonel Friedrich—a member of the Erlauf military and a citizen of the oppressing country that rules her homeland.
From helping her break into the royal library to saving her from a rogue mage, Friedrich draws her closer and challenges her mindset of the queen and the war.
Cinderella knows Friedrich is not all he appears to be, but can she trust him with her country and her heart?

Love, love, loved it! 😉
Strong female character. Very loyal and will make a great leader.
For quite a bit of the first part of the book I did not have the sense of this being a retelling of Cinderella. Other than her name and the fact that she was struggling, it didn’t equate. Eventually I was able to see the story but it took a while to get there. Her step mother isn’t evil and abusive even if she isn’t helpful. She and her daughters pretty much stick to themselves. Cinderella was really running the show in her home as she struggled to keep afloat. She also had power within her community due to her title.
I didn’t really like the colonel that much. Didn’t hate him either. His redeeming characteristic was in seeing the relationship between love, hate and society. But since I didn’t really fall in love with him it didn’t really seem like Cinderella should either. It did take me a while to figure out his real identity so at least it wasn’t predictable from page 1.
I have loved all of the K.M. Shea fairy tale variations. Her heroines are gutsy and intelligent and this book is no exception.
I love KM Shea’s take on fairytales and her sense of humor is is amazing!
It was a great twist on an old classic! I could hardly put it down.
I read the first book in this series, which made me want to read this one. The first book was WAY better in my opinion but this one still kept my interest and I finished it.
I loved the book.
There are a lot of negative reviews about it not being true to the original Cinderella story and they are right. But if you don’t get hung up on that it was a good story and I enjoyed the read. I have found if I get hung up on what my expectations of what that author should write, I often miss out on enjoying what the author did write. This is a good blend of fairy tale and a good historical romance.
I might be 57 years “old”, but I LOVE all the rewritten fairy tales!
Sweet book. Easy read!
Awesome retelling of Cinderella and her prince. I found it very entertaining.
I (and my daughter) enjoyed this book so much we purchased the whole series within a couple of days, sprint read them then re-read just to savour every nuance. What we both enjoyed most was that “strong woman” didn’t mean masculine or perfect or many other typical “strong woman” definitions, just real and believable.
