17 year old Ember Denning has made an art of isolating herself. She prefers the dead. She spends her days skipping school in old cemeteries and her nights hiding from her alcoholic father at the funeral home where she works. When her own father dies, Ember learns her whole life is a lie. Standing in the cemetery that’s been her sanctuary, she’s threatened by the most beautiful boy she’s ever seen … seen and rescued by two people who claim to be her family. They say she’s special, that she has a supernatural gift like them…they just don’t know exactly what it is.
They take her to a small Florida town, where Ember’s life takes a turn for the weird. She’s living with her reaper cousins, an orphaned werewolf pack, a faery and a human genius. Ember’s powers are growing stronger, morphing into something bigger than anything anybody anticipated. Ember has questions but nobody has answers. Nobody knows what she is. They only know her mysterious magical gift is trying to kill them and that beautiful dangerous boy from the cemetery may be the only thing standing between her and death.
As Ember’s talents are revealed so are the secrets her father hid and those in power who would seek to destroy her. What’s worse, saving Ember has put her cousins in danger and turned her friend’s lives upside down. Ember must learn to embrace her magic or risk losing the family she’s pieced together.

Not what I was thinking by reading the title, but enjoyed quite a bit and look forward to reading more.
Loved the story line. Kept me intersted and wanting more!
I really liked this book. It was different from other shape-shifter/witches/unknown powers type story. I read the first two rather quickly and was all excited to read the 3rd installment but so far, amazon doesn’t carry it. I’m dying to know what happens next.
This basis of the story was good, but the prolonged teen angst really detracted from it. I found several of the key characters to be so damaged it was hard to relate to, or even like them. The ending ends a bit abruptly with a lot of unanswered questions, and unresolved issues, but not planning to read any sequels.
I loved this book. I immediately bought the second one as soon as I finished it. Wish the third one was out already
I realy liked it. Didnt care for the man on man love scenes. Loved Her male cousin at the beginning. Then he turned in to a soft gay pansey. Not saying gays are panseys but he cpuld of kept some self respect.
Excellent series! Just a fun read. Can’t wait for the next installment. I really enjoy all the characters!
Loved this book
I wasn’t expecting much, but this is a great story that had quite a few unexpected twists.
Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things made me laugh and cry. It was a such a page turner I couldn’t put it down. The relationships are intense and very realistic. I bought the sequel before I’d long before I’d finished the first book.
Really good story plot. Only complaint is it needs to be proof read again by an editor lots of mistakes.
I liked the characters and the plot was good.
Wow
Hated for he books to end…
Characters that you care about. I can’t (don’t want to) get them out of my mind. I find myself mentally rereading favorite sections of this book and wondering how did this character become the being they are. The book was full of teasers about where they each came from. But, it never lost sight of who the main character was and that “this” story was hers.
When I read the name of the series, I was very unsure about whether I’d like it or not. I like my science fiction and fantasy to be of the “hasn’t happened yet” sort. Now, I’m glad it has an easy name to remember. It will be no problem to look for the next books in the series.
Predictable and trite.
A satisfying beginning to an expansive mythos with curious well crafted characters.
Amazing! Couldn’t put it down.
The Unwanted series meets Harry Potter… This book combines witches, demons, fairies, and reapers… Sounds scary at first, but it was an intense but hard to put down book. There are a few flaws in the writing here and there that make reading sentences challenging, but overall it is a good story!
Pretty good, but I found it hard to get into, not having read the first book in the series. Once I find that one, my rating may go up.
