What starts out as an ordinary day turns to something out of The Twilight Zone when bus driver Terrance realizes that every teacher and all but one student have disappeared from the school in town. With the aid of the remaining child, Terrance sets out on a journey for answers, and what he finds is chilling.
When I started reading Children of the Future, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was no let down. Full of mystery and intrigue, this is a real page turner, mostly because I haven’t read anything like it before. The conclusion of the story was imaginative, and I loved it.
The writing style is easy to follow and the characters are written in a believable way. This is one of those books that leave you thinking after you’ve turned the last page.
Recommended for fans of mystery and thriller.
Children of the Future by Jane Suen was so much fun to read. It’s not too long for a weekend read. I wouldn’t say its for little children but preteens would like it. It’s a good mystery story with an unexpected ending.

5 out of 5 stars
The story Children Of The Future by Jane Suen is a book that I found imaginative and interesting. It is what I would call a short story or novella. It had quite a way of grabbing my attention and holding it from the first chapter to the last. I enjoyed reading about the character of Telly. He is the town bus driver who one afternoon finds all of the children, with the exception of one, missing. Telly enjoys driving the children to and from school. He is quite concerned about the missing children and goes out to search for them along with Billy, the one child that he has found hidden in a cabinet. Will Telly and Billy find the children? Read this book to find out. The story has an atmosphere of mystery and I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. While the story is a bit shorter than some, I found myself identifying with the characters. I enjoyed many of them that are introduced and how they interact with Telly. Don’t miss out on a story that the author has made come alive. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.
Children of the Future by Jane Suen hit my TBR courtesy of a Goodreads recommendation. A nice mixture of science fiction and mystery, it was a quick and entertaining book.
Synopsis (from the author):
Where are the missing children?
A small yellow school bus pulls up in front of the little red brick schoolhouse. Telly, the bus driver, discovers all of the children are missing — all except one very frightened Billy who has hidden in a cabinet. Where is everyone? Telly and Billy are determined to find the answers.
The little town of Rocky Flats is stirred into a frenzy. Nothing like this has ever happened before! Where have the children gone? Why? As the clock ticks and the little town rallies together in the search, will they find the children before it’s too late?
What I liked:
Children of the Future was a well-told simple tale. Telly was a good solid character and Billy was a brave little guy. Together, the two of them set out to solve the mystery of Billy’s missing classmates. The story revolves around the search and the clues the two uncover. I enjoyed Telly’s discovery of the truth (though no spoilers from me) and the little surprising twist at the end. Overall, a fast and fun book!
What I didn’t like:
The book was a little simplistic and, aside from Telly and Billy, the characters were one-dimensional. The anxiety shown by the parents of the missing children seemed almost non-existent and unrealistic.
Overall impression:
I enjoyed Children of the Future! The book had nice elements of science fiction and mystery and the tale moved along quickly. I recommend this novella to anyone who likes a quick fun read with a surprise ending.
My rating: 4 Stars
Children of the Future is the debut mystery by Jane Suen. It is funny how I went back to the ‘beginning’ after having read couple of her later stories and you can see how a writer has grown with each book they have created. When you read the synopsis for the story, you ask yourself if this is an episode of X-Files where instead of Mulder and Scully we have Telly and Billy …
The writer takes us to a little town called Rocky Flats where 25 kids and 3 teachers have disappeared … who or what took them? You will need to follow the clues that the writer has given us and I promise you that whatever you think you know, you are completely wrong and you will get a profound aha moment when it all gets revealed …
You need to take your time when you start with the story, it is Jane Suen’s debut novel and it might seem as if it is her inexperience that you think you are encountering in seemingly unnecessary information and replays of earlier scenes and maybe it is so but at the same time if you slow down and get into the feel of the little town and its people you wonder that maybe it is all on purpose …
Suen has a gift for writing compelling, thought-provoking tales. This novella kept me engaged and quite frankly kept me guessing the whole way. I found the characters to be relatable, and the plot felt much bigger than the few pages it was contained within. This mystery is one I will most heartedly recommend to others. Just a wonderful book.
I must start this review with the preface that I absolutely adore Jane Suen, and so every book of hers until this point has been a hit, 5 stars easily for me. I was a tad let down with ‘Children of The Future.’ Upon further looking at reviews and goodreads I found out this was Suen’s first novel and so things really made sense. This is on par with a first time novel from most authors and in the long run it made things easier for me to digest at the end of the day.
Children of The Future is a twisty and mysterious tale of a small town rocked by the sudden disappearance of a bus full of students and their teachers. All have gone without much of a hint as to where except one, Telly. A strong main character among many I still struggled to find his voice in this. The bus driver, also spared from the mysterious disappearing act, teams with Telly, the parents, and the police to try and figure out what happened and how to bring home the children. The trail is complicated and a tad slow, but intriguing enough to wonder what is going on and keep reading. Just as it seems they may have figured things out Telly disappears and even more shocking twists arise. Overall the ending seemed to round out the story and left me for the most part satisfied. While this isn’t a strong five star read for me I enjoyed it enough to give it a solid four stars. I look forward to seeing what else is available, as we await new stuff, from the talented Jane Suen.
A great read about mystery. Telly’s usual working week is altered when his school bus of children disappears. With only one child left, Telly panics and starts a search for the other children, one search turns into several as the whole town becomes involved. Can they find the missing children before its too late?
A great read, Well developed plot with twists and turns that just couldn’t put down. Well developed characters like Telly doing his best but with his worries underneath or Billy inquisitive but vulnerable underneath. Great cast of supporting characters like the friendly and supportive Ray or the suspicious Steve.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like wit the school full of life and people made eerly empty wonderfully written. Or the clearing under the moon by the lake beautiful but still mysterious with the footprints in the mud. Also loved the small details like the watch and te footprints small but so vivid its as if you’re actually there.
I also liked the routine every day feel of the first few chapters contrasting with the unusual mystery of the situation beautifully written. I also liked the use of the days in the chapter headings giving the novel a fast paced feel was a great addition. I loved the use of mystery with suspense drawn out to perfection with details revealed slowly, making you want to read on to find out what happened. Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.
Well this novel certainly plays with your mind your always left questioning thing’s but that’s why you end up being so eager to turn the page’s you just want to find out what is happening! The author has a magical way of pulling you in with the first few pages and then building up the story just enough to keep your on your toes within just afew chapters as well as the character’s you really get to know them just within a short time absolutely beautifully written! I really did enjoy this mystery read your trying to come up with theories while your reading which I find fun especially when you realise you were completely of track Haha!
Children Of The Future by Jane Suen was not what I expected and the premise of the story was ok but it didn’t hit its mark with me but it is aimed with YA’s in mind. It is a YA suspense that is a quick and easy read. I note this was her first book and her writing has vastly improved with the other books I have read of hers. I found it hard to read due to the narrative but that is more my personal preference. There is a lot that I feel Jane could have written to make it even more suspenseful and give the story and characters more substance. The story starts off slow but then picks up and gains momentum but then it just stops, where I am left wondering what just happened.
Even though it wasn’t enough for me, I am sure others will enjoy it.
Children of the Future by Jane Suen
4 Stars!!!!
This is the third book from this author that I have read. I find that the author’s writing style is
refreshing. The genre of this book is out of my comfort genre but I found it to be quite an addicting read. The suspense and mystery really kept me glued to the pages. I don’t read mysteries often but this was a nice change.
I really love Telly’s character and the part he played in the story. The way he cares for the kids is really endearing. I was really at the end of my seat as the drama and mystery played out. I found that the author had a great way of drawing out the story and the intrigue. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely be reading more from this author in the Future.
This is my first book by this author and oh what a ride. Children of the Future is a book that is mysterious and scary at the same time. In this book you have the small town of Rocky Flats where a bus driver named Telly discovers all of the towns children have disappeared except for one child Billy. This book surrounds the anxiety and search for the children. This is a novella length book. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Children of the Future by Jane Suen was an awesome short read that I could not put down. Bus driver Telly, pulls up to a school and comes to find that all the children are missing, all but Billy who Telly finds hiding in a cabinet. Needing and wanting answers Telly and Billy set out to find out who took the children and where they are. Nothing like this has ever happened in Rocky Flats and the town is in a uproar but also rallies together in the search and only hope that it’s not too late to save them all.
I read this in one sitting and couldn’t put this down. The author did an amazing job with this, and the only thing I can say negative about it was I wish it was longer because I didn’t want the book to end. I give this book 5 stars and highly recommend.
Children of the Future is a novel by Jane Suen. This is my first novel by this author.
In the small town of Rocky Flats, the weeks starts like any other but when 25 students and 3 teachers disappear, the town rallies together to solve this mystery. With help from the bus driver whose name is Telly and another student, follows clues in search of the missing people.
From the title of this novel, I thought the plot had something to do with the future like kids from the future coming to the past for an unknown reason. But the mystery is more than even I thought it was going to be.
The novel started out slow, but it did keep me interested. With the holiday, I wasn’t able to do a binge a read like I usually do, so I had to keep putting it down, but once it got into the story, I was reading it more quickly.
For anyone who wants to interesting and unique mystery, I would recommend.
I have read a few books from this author and she continues to blow my mind. This is a short story that will make you want more. I could not put this book down for anything. I wanted to know what happened. It only took me a couple of hours to devour this book.
Telly is the neighborhood’s bus driver and he loves it. He knows all of his kids on his route personally. Telly gets up and does his normal bus route and he then goes to his other job. He works for a nice man when the kids are in school. Telly comes back to the school to pick the kids up but no one comes out of the building. He parks his bus and goes into the school and there is no one there. Telly ends up finding one boy that was hiding. The town sends search parties to see if they can find the kids and teachers that just vanished. Telly finds some clues but will he be able to put them together? Where did all these people go and why are they missing?
I absolutely loved this book. The storyline had me hooked right from the beginning. It felt like you were trying to solve the mystery with Telly. This talented author kept you on your toes all the way until the end. This author is becoming one of my favorites for short stories. I can’t wait to see what she will write about next.
Children of the future by Jane Suen is the first book that I have read by this Author and I thought it was a good book and even though it was a fast read I was not disappointed. Children of the Future is a short, mysterious read. This read kept me guessing on what was going to happen next. I loved everything about Telly and how involved he was. He was really concerned for the missing children. I would recommend this book for Teens its short enough to keep them interested and I think they will really enjoy this read. All and all this book was a really good read I like how it was a different story line then what I usually read and I look forward to reading more books by Jane Suen.
Children Of The Future by Jane Suen
4-stars
Children Of The Future was an interesting read. A group of children and their teachers suddenly disappear and they are discovered missing by the school bus driver Telly. Telly discovers someone was left behind and they really together to try and find the kids and teachers. I found the story line to be very unique and I was shocked by the reasoning of the kidnapping. I did feel like the book ended on a cliffhanger. I loved how kind and thoughtful Telly was toward the kids. He was also extremely motivated to locate them and went out on a limb to follow a possible lead. I really enjoyed this short easy read.
Children of the Future by Jane Suen, did not end the way I was expecting it to end. I gasped and had an aha moment at the exact same time.
Telly and Billy working together to find the kids was very sweet. Telly went above and beyond what you think a school bus driver would do, but then again it’s a small town and everyone knows everyone so it’s a bit different.
This is a fairly short story which seemed even shorter due to getting sucked into the story. I would definitely recommend this book.
Children of the Future by Jane Suen was an interesting and mysterious read. This is not my first book by her as I have read several. Jane has a way to pull you in and keep you interested. Her books are unique and a little quirky. This book was very different. Not bad just different. I did like it because with all Janes book she throws something in there that we aren’t expecting. Overall I think Jane does a good job and I like her books. I’d read others. 4 star rating.
I did enjoy this story. Its full of mystery and makes an unlikely person a hero.
Telly is a bus driver for a school in a little village. One route day he turns up to collect the kids and everyone is missing. Everyone that is except Billy who hid in a cupboard.
Together Telly and Billy start a search for the rest of the missing children and Telly uncovers a secret mission that is looking to make the world a more peaceful place
