The Edgar Award-winning mystery that launched the career of bestselling novelist Stuart Woods. In the bitter winter of 1920, the first body is found in Delano, Georgia; the naked corpse of an unidentified teenager. There is no direct evidence of murder, but the body bears marks of what seems to be a ritual beating. The investigation falls to Will Henry Lee, a failed cotton farmer newly appointed … cotton farmer newly appointed as Delano’s first chief of police. Lee’s obsession with the crime begins a story that weaves through the decades, following the life of a small southern town and the role of three police chiefs in unraveling the crime.
Chiefs is the best kind of thriller, where the investigation plays out against the drama beneath the surface of a seemingly placid community, seething with the pressures of race, love, hate, and; always; political power, extending from the town fathers all the way to Washington, DC.
Includes a new foreword by the author on the twenty-fifth anniversary of its publication.

Generational odyssey of early to mid 20th century Georgia. Serial killer, corrupt civil servants, bigots, and good people trying to do the right thing. I loved the book.
I read Chiefs over 30 years ago. When I’m asked what are my favorite books of all time, it still makes the list Enough said.
Read this years ago. Will have to reread soon
This was one of the best books I ever read! I think a movie was made from it too.
What a wonderful writer. Have read several books and will read many more. Thank you for sharing your rich talent
I have read this at least twice and will read it again. It is a great book!
Stewart Woods at his best. The story of 3 chiefs of police in a small Georgia town in 3 different periods of time, who try to solve the same murder of a period of decades. Great read.
I have read many of Stuart Woods later books and also his second book in the Will Lee series and have enjoyed them so it was nice to read the first book of his career. It was well written and you come away with good background of some of his characters.
I enjoy many of Stuart Woods books that are not part of the Stone Barrington series….i.e. The Price of Beverly Hills. EBR
The beginning of the Stuart Woods series. Still my favorite.
I love all of his books
Very enjoyable mystery with twists and turns.
Despite some obvious plotting and stock characters, I found this account of life in a small GA town through 3 police chiefs in the 20th century interesting.
