Falling in love was the easy part.
Being secretly in love with my brother’s best friend is where it got tricky.
Levi Dent was off-limits. Which was probably for the best, since he barely knew I existed.
Until one night I saw an opportunity I couldn’t resist.
The problem was, I got caught.
She tricked me.
I knew there was something so familiar about her, but I just couldn’t resist.
Hannah … so familiar about her, but I just couldn’t resist.
Hannah Matthews was nothing more than my best friend’s little sister. Except she wasn’t so little anymore.
I need to forget all about her.
If only it were that easy…

This book is full of surprises! I went in thinking it would be a simple rom-com, which it is, but it also has so much depth. You will experience every emotion throughout this book. I love how it starts off and the twists and turns it takes along the way. I like how Hannah and Levi have known each practically their whole lives and the flashbacks of their growing up together. They aren’t all happy memories but paints the whole picture. You will love Hannah and Levi’s journey to HEA!
J.D. Hollyfield is a new to me author and I will definitely check out more of her books.
Has anyone else had a hard time getting into books during this quarantine time? Some days I have no issues and some days I just can’t focus. And when I first picked up this book and began reading, I really did fear that I wasn’t going to be able to get into the story. When you review so many romance books, a lot of them begin to feel like you’re reading almost the same story with different characters. Sometimes it just honestly feels mundane. And I hated that feeling as I was struggling to get through chapter one and part of chapter two. I almost–almost–put it down and gave up. I’ve found when my emotions are in a negative place, that sometimes spills over into my attitude for what I’m reading, and they’ve definitely been all over the place lately. Thankfully, the end of chapter two just piqued my interest enough to keep going. Now, I’m going to add a side note here and say that I did go back and re-read those first two chapters later and I can honestly say it truly was me and not the writing or the direction of the story. OK. Back to the review! So, ahem, where was I? Oh yeah. Chapter three. Here’s where I really start getting into the plot and kind of already loving Hannah and am still on the fence with Levi. Then I begin to think this will be another brother’s best friend trope in contemporary romance. And I’m mostly right. But there’s this underlying comedic element in Hannah’s inner thoughts and dialogue that also intrigues me. And there were moments where I really wished I hadn’t started reading it in bed while my husband was sleeping because, in those moments, it was so hard not to giggle out loud. OK. So now we have a contemporary romance, brother’s best friend trope with a pretty hefty dash of romantic comedy tossed into the mix. Great! Now, I’m loving Hannah and my heart breaks for how she was treated growing up. I still am not too sure about Levi, but I don’t think he’s a bad guy. And what do you know, but the author throws in yet another plot twist, and now, we have a heaping serving of romantic suspense/thriller in the mix. And she adds these elements so seamlessly that you almost miss the transitions.
NICUnurse’s Rating: I’m not sure I’ve ever really read a book like Chicks, Man. I was drawn in by the cover and by the blurb first. But with the twists and turns and combined elements of angst, comedy, and suspense, for me, this book is one of a kind. This will most certainly go on my list of books I will re-read over and over again. Such a refreshing read!
I give Chicks, Man by J.D. Hollyfield 5 out of 5 stars!
Chicks, Man! Chicks be crazy! JD Hollyfield is definitely a crazy chick! This book is crazy, chaotic, and ridiculously sweet.
I just want to say my older brother never had any friends worth looking at. They weren’t even people I would have wanted to be in the same room with so I’m totally jealous of Hannah. And yet with everything she’s been through, I want to beat up her brother’s friends. Guys are so clueless. Or most are…it seems Hannah and Levi are more in tune than others would like.
It started a long time ago with an unrequited crush. Now its a clusterf@$< of epic proportions! One shady closet. One desperate woman. A whole lot of trouble. Chicks, Man. Can't live with them; can't live without them. Sexy, sweet and no shortage of activity, Chicks, Man will keep you entertained, have you shaking your head, and falling in love!
Grab your snacks and settle in for the ride of your life. Chicks, Man is a roller coaster of romance, comedy, and mystery-suspense. I laughed, flushed at the hotness, and cried with happy tears as I experienced J.D. Hollyfield at her best. If someone asked me today what book to read by this talented author, this is the book. Hands down Hollyfield’s best.
I went in thinking this book was going to be like watching a chick flick. And I was sooooo wrong. Yes, this story is fun and clever. But it’s more than that. It has action, obsession, bullying, dedication. It also has a sweetness to it that Hannah needs. You see, she needs and decides to grab an opportunity to enjoy life. And she has a giant determination that feeds her self worth but she still needs a champion on her side. Someone to stand up for her. It will frustrate you to no end that she keeps being treated poorly. But still, the story keeps you there with that feeling of “wait for it, wait for it…” And slowly, Levi opens his eyes. And it’s like a revelation. This guy is a magnet for unworthy women. But Hannah is different. And Levi is one of those with a lot to give that should never be let go of. Bossy and possessive, with a dirty mouth but mixed with a lot of kindness. This is a great story all around and one of the things I appreciate the most is the dedication and the details of the struggles happening after the happily ever after. It makes it realistic and worth while.
This story had me consumed from beginning to end. It is a love story that was destined and took years in the making. Hannah has crushed on Levi since she was 7 years old but could never do anything about it because he only looked at her as his friend’s sister until Hannah made a bold move and now Levi has been snared. When they are forced to work together, their passion ignites. When Hannah’s actions put her in the crossfire, I never expected the outcome.
I think many of us can relate to not being the popular kid and being “unseen” throughout our lives.
Levi is a swoony hero who never realized that all through his youth he was “seeing” the Hannah that she was to become through all of their interactions. This story had all of the feels and each was heartfelt, their aim was perfect. This story was so good.
“I’ve never felt this urge before. This need for someone. An emptiness when she’s not with me, and a fullness when I have her wrapped in my arms.” ~ Levi
