“Cherry Cake and a Cadaver” earns 5/5 Slices of Punchbowl Cherry Cake!
This is the second book in the Lily Gayle Lambert Mystery series, and it was highly entertaining from a clever mystery to some quirky southern characters…I love Miss Edna. The mystery is very interesting weaving the past with the present and bringing into play the idea of second chances, and whether or nor the past is better left in the past. I enjoyed the banter between Lily Gayle and Miss Edna, and antics of Lily Gayle’s Lucy to Dixie’s resistant Ethel. Using the clues I went off in the wrong direction, but enjoyed the final solution. Susan knows what we like in our ‘cozies’ by including recipes for some of the treats mentioned: Grits and Gravy Café’s (Death by) Chocolate Gravy, Dixie’s Wicked Chickens Deviled Eggs, and Luxen’s Punchbowl Cherry Cake. Just what you need for any occasion!
Received a free copy for a review. I really enjoyed this story. It was fantastic and entertaining.

Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. Lily Gayle is smart, sassy and a well bred Southern woman. She also is as curious as a cat and cannot help getting into trouble with her snooping. So when the local baker is killed, she knows what she has to do. Never mind that her cousin, Ben, who happens to be the County Sheriff, does not want her anywhere near his investigation. Since she is used to arguing with her cousin she does not let that deter her and she begins investigating his murder. With the reluctant help of her friend, Dixie, she is determined to solve the case. Lily Gayle and Dixie’s friendship is so funny and so heartwarming. I think that their relationship is one of my favorites in all of cozyville.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing. The small town southern setting was described perfectly and I could hear the gossip grapevine in my mind. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.
There were actually two mysteries in this book: who killed the baker and what happened to one member of the community. The murder mystery was carried on well throughout the entire book.
There were enough suspects and twists and turns that it made figuring out the mystery a very difficult task. I did not fully figure out who the killer was until it was revealed at the end. And the disappearance added another level to the book, trying to figure out if the two are related and where the person is.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This is a great series and I cannot wait to read more books.
Cherry Cake and A Cadaver is Book 2 in the Lily Gayle Lambert Series. I have to say I am in LOVE with this series. It wasn’t that long ago I read the first book and I knew I needed to get my grabby hands on the next book sooner than later.
Lily Gayle is back with a new mystery and her pals are with her. This time town baker Luxen is discovered murdered right before the big grand opening of the new bed in breakfast in Mercy.
I love Lily Gayle, she is so relatable. I love the small town of Mercy, Missisipi and this mystery involves some really interesting history that dates back to World War II. I won’t say anymore because I am not a spoiler kind of girl.
The mystery is so well written with some surprises that I said to myself what just happened. Oh that’s clever! I really love this series and you know I will be digging into Book 3 very soon. I cannot recommend this series enough!
