There’s nothing worse than living next door to your childhood nemesis, except maybe being forced to share your dream project with him, being blackmailed into going along with something that was just wrong on so many levels, and having your hot cocoa stolen by the person that drove you to drink it in the first place. As long as she has plenty of hot cocoa, a pair of pliers on hand and is able to … to resist Connor O’Neil’s bad boy charm then Rory James should be able to make it through this project with her sanity intact. If not….. She’d probably face a few more nights in jail, have a few more restraining orders slapped against her and lose her heart to the man that ruined her life.

Gotta say Rory and Connor drove me nuts, they’re pretty intense with each other and flashbacks to the pranks makes you cringe-lol, I found myself fascinated with their story, wish the humor was there like the first 2 Neighbors from hell books.
Okay, I didn’t enjoy the first half of this book much at all. This is an enemy to lovers story, and has a lot of the normal NFH humor, but Rory & Connor take prank wars to a level that is just beyond… beyond. They’re MEAN to each other, and that I couldn’t handle very well. (Sidenote here – THEY didn’t think they were being mean. They were each playing a game & they seemed to enjoy it. I just found a lot of their interactions or pranks mean.)
So, for me, the first half of the book was not a winner at all.
However, the last 30% or so was SOOOO GOOOD! They still had the “fight” to them, but the affection for each other was more obvious & they weren’t being mean. Plus, the Bradford cousins showed up & THAT brought a lot of extra fun into the mix.
I ended the story with mixed emotions. I don’t think I could re-read this one because of the beginning, but I did end up happy at the end! : )
Oddly enough, this author is pretty entertaining despite the fact her characters are basically horribly selfish individuals before they ‘fall in love’. It’s quite remarkable how she can make thoughtless jerks into great boyfriends. So weird. That’s one reason these aren’t a huge favorite of mine. They’re good. They’re entertaining. But I really need to relate to the heroine in a way that I don’t in these. Most of these men I’d have told off and left. Or the heroine is a selfish, thoughtless jerk instead and that bothers me too.
Still, they’re entertaining and funny.
Everything. I love this author so much
Another gem in the Neighbor from Hell series by R.L. – I love how Rory and Connor’s story is a childhood friendship/enemies to lovers sort of romance. I was laughing almost constantly over Rory’s threats with pliers to Connor’s body parts and her addiction to hot chocolate. I enjoyed seeing Jason, Haley, Zoe, Trevor and the rest of the Bradfords too. Connor? That man won me over once the truth of his hidden love for Rory came thru. So many feel-good, laugh-out-loud, and swoon-worthy moments that will kept me smiling until the very end. R.L. never disappoints me with her additions to this series….considering I’ve read this more than once and enjoy it even more each time I do. R.L. has a true talent with writing light-hearted romcoms filled with tons of feel good moments, Checkmate proves that.
Connor at times that boy is cruising for a bruising, “I tell you what, Rory,” he said in a seductive whisper that would probably make other women tremble with need, but only managed to set her rage off by another notch, “if you’re really good I might just let you make me some hot cocoa instead of just fetching my coffee.” When needing to talk out his frustrations Connor finds it best to talk to a dog, “why the hell did I kiss her?” Connor muttered as he leaned back against his truck. Bunny barked his answer, tapering it off with a growl of disapproval. He sighed heavily even as he nodded his agreement. “Exactly. Woman eff with your head, buddy. Remember that.” Rory, girl you kill me, “I was planning on going for your nipples, not your a**,” she felt obligated to point out.” Another book well done I love this series.
