The follow-up to Under Tower Peak is another taut, fast-moving thriller that builds to an explosive, action-filled conclusion.Under Tower Peak was acclaimed by the Wall Street Journal as one of the Ten Best Mysteries of 2013. In this sequel, Tommy Smith, the Iraq War vet and former Eastern Sierra packer, is home from war after re-upping for a tour in Afghanistan. When his old friend Dave Cathcart … Afghanistan. When his old friend Dave Cathcart disappears from his ranch, Tommy answers the call to help find him. What he learns is that his love for Dave’s daughter, his old flame Sarah Cathcart, has never died, but the country where he grew up is undergoing change. Stockmen are selling off water rights to the highest bidder, rendering ranches barren and the community bitter, as drugs and a dangerous new element have moved in.
When Sarah confides that her husband, a smooth-talking entrepreneur, has lost her trust and may not be all he seems, Tommy begins to investigate. Soon another disappearance leads to a gruesome discovery, and a brutal sequence of events takes Sarah and Tommy to old haunts in the high country, where once again he will need to call on his sniper’s skills to save them both and to rescue her missing father.

A patient and smart war vet and his not so bright but greedy child hood friend in a once in a lifetime find that twist them around. Good Read!
I love Bart Paul’s sparse writing style and I certainly love his main character, Tommy. This mystery/modern western had all the makings of an interesting story, including lots of horseback rides, farm life, good and bad guys, etc. An exciting plotline developed in perfect sequence and kept me guessing.
The climax was a disappointment for several reasons, mostly because if Tommy really cared about Sarah, he would never have used her as bait. And then there was such a constant stream of surprises that ended in violence, I almost felt the author was trying to please thriller readers. It was unnecessary to have so many people get shot! Especially twisting in Tommy’s ex-lover…it just felt unrealistic.
I have a hunch that male readers who love a lot of shoot ’em up scenes and macho decision making will love it. I’m sad because I loved the first book but won’t be reading any more of Paul’s Tommy Smith books because of this one.
Thriller in cowboy boots on horses. Liked details of nature & ranch life.
Good modern day cowboy story. Great nature & landscape descriptions. Good & believable main characters.
Great book!
Enjoyable, light reading. I won’t buy the next one because of the price.
slow start so I didn’t continue
I want more of this series.
Fact detail is excellent. From horse shoeing tools to rifle calibers. Author has details correct. Story is lent credence and interest because of correct factual background. Very much better than most writers. This author has been there and done that.
I thougt it was ok
Read the first two back to back, can’t wait for the next in the series!! Very realistic and I could imagine meeting these characters in every day life.
So entertaining, even though I had tears in my eyes occasionally, I still kept reading!! Great stories
I must not have read the same book as other reviewers. I found Cheatgrass horribly convoluted and contrived, with situations that were just too improbable. I couldn’t even finish this unbelievable mess. Don’t waste your time or money.
