Lucas Thorn wasn’t born a cheater. All it took was a single moment—say, a certain disastrous incident on the night before his wedding—and boom. Reputation destroyed forever and always. So now he owns it. He has a lady friend for every night of the week (except Sundays—God’s day and all), and his rules are simple: No commitments. No exceptions. But a certain smart-mouthed, strawberry blonde vixen … strawberry blonde vixen is about to blow that all to hell.
Avery Black has never forgiven Lucas for cheating on her sister. And suddenly being forced to work with him is pretty much a nightmare on steroids. Of course, it does afford her the opportunity to make his life as difficult as possible. But no good revenge scheme comes without payback. Because he didn’t become the Lucas Thorn without learning a few things about women.
Now Avery’s lust for vengeance has turned into, well, lust. And if Lucas stops cheating, it’s definitely not because he’s falling in love…

Cheater is the first book in the Curious Liaisons series by the amazing Rachel Van Dyken! This is one of those times where you do not judge a book by its name and cover. Btw: I love both! So please read the book before you judge it. I know we all hate on cheaters but at the same time, we do love our manwhores. Rachel took a risk on this one and I love her for it.
Lucas Thorn made one epic mistake that cost him his fiancée, best friend, and ruined a friendship of twenty years between the parents of the bride and groom. But, it all worked out. He loves the life he has now. He has his weekly line-up of woman, an amazing job, and a kickass condo. His life was going great with his sex is my yoga type of lifestyle. That was until his new intern showed up and fucked it all up. Avery Black. The younger sister of his one-time fiancé. She is a pixie of a woman with fight, sass, and kickass right hook. She was only seventeen when he last saw her, she was beautiful then but she is gorgeous now. Yep. He was fucked.
Avery wants to hate Lucas aka Thorn. She hates what happened four years ago. It tore families apart. She needs this internship so she will suck it and up and deal with his whore ass. She will not let him ruin this. She saw the way he looks at her. She is determined to to keep all of her walls up and not let him Thorn her. Instead, she is going to make his life hell. Will she be able to keep things professional while hating on him?
I loved this story! It pushes the envelope. It’s hilarious, flirty, sexy, and has the perfect amount of angst. Lucas and Avery’s banter is epic. The sexual tension is amazing. They have a long history that comes into play and it’s a complicated one. It’s makes the story even better! I love Lucas and Avery but I wanted to slap them more than once. I also wanted to hug them and be their friends. Just like the characters, I had mixed feelings. But, something I wasn’t mixed about was Avery’s love of food…no salads for this girl.
Overall…it was hilarious, beautiful, and sexy ride! This is both what I expected because it’s Rachel but it was also unexpected because of the title. I am telling you again…do not judge until you read it.
Quotes:
“Look at me like that again and I’m putting Ex-Lax in your coffee, then locking all the bathroom doors.”
“YOU’RE IMPOSSIBLE!”
“I’M A WOMAN!” I raised my voice even more.
“Someone should hold out a piece of bacon and time your sprints,” he joked.
Cheater (Curious Liasions #1) was a great read by Rachel Van Dyken. Lucas Thorn became a cheater after an incident the night before his wedding. That night his reputation changed forever and now he’s decided to own that reputation. He has a woman for every night except Sunday. Avery Black has never forgiven Lucas for cheating on her sister. Now she’s forced to work with him and it’s nothing short of a nightmare. She comes up with a good revenge scheme, but forgets about the payback. I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more by the author.
I haven’t loved a romantic comedy this hard in forever. This book rates 6 stars for me. The banter between the H/H sparkles in the book and the romance is top-notch. The characters are realistic and easy to care about, even the “cheater” is lovable. Worth the read. It was the laugh I needed after a hard week!
This was a laugh out loud rom-com and once I started listening to it I couldn’t stop. Avery shows up for her first day as an intern and low and behold it is for Lucas Thorn, the Lucas Thorn who was engaged to her sister until the night before the wedding when he was discovered in the wrong sister’s bed and the wedding was called off…after kissing her…not the sister he was found in bed with. Now, after working together and a drunken night which she wakes up in his bed and his sister finds her in his apartment she covers up by telling the lie they are involved. This starts the “mothers” conspiring and the “sisters” mixing it up, and don’t forget all the women. So freaking good!
The story however was very funny, sexy, steamy, and all around great. I really loved this book. Cheater is the type of stories I love to read by this author. Lucas and Avery were great characters. I loved their enemies to lovers romance. They had a lot of history and it was so fun seeing Avery try to deny her attraction to Lucas that she’s harbored since she was 17. This was an all around wonderful book and worth the read.
I usually avoid books with cheating, not because I think they make for bad storytelling, but because they give me anxiety. I know the fall out is coming and I get worked up as I read. But, something about the synopsis of this book grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go. I’m so glad for that. This was in no way what I expected. I went through so many emotions reading this book, but the biggest one was anger and not at the person most people in the book were angry with. I was angry at a broken person who wasn’t at all the person they believed themselves to be. Lucas and Avery had such great banter between them and that is one of my favorite things in a book. The chemistry of the characters, the main and the supporting was well written. There was no point where I was taken out of my reading bubble because the story rubbed me wrong or made me need to take a break from it. In fact, I wanted to keep reading because I was sure there was so much more to Lucas Thorn than everyone said. I can’t say if there is. You’ll have to read for yourself. But I can say this book is the perfect blend of funny, sad, happy, angry–all the emotions you want when reading a great book. Easily a five star for me and I would recommend to anyone to read.
A fantastic read! Definitely a laugh out loud rom com. Definitely do not judge this book by its title. I absolutely loved Thorn and Avery. Their banter was off the charts enemies to lovers angry, sexy and a whole lot of funny. A must read. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. The audio/narration is great too!!
Cheater was an unputdownable, highly addictive, captivating read!
The chemistry between Lucas and Avery was brilliant. They had the sexy and steamy encounters, emotional, heartbreaking discussions, and hilariously funny pranks and jokes.
I completely fell in love with Lucas. Yes, it took me quite awhile to fall for him, but it did happen. Part of me thinks that it was inevitable that I would fall. His actions in the beginning definitely made me dislike him, however, I knew that deep down, he was doing what he thought was best for Avery. He wanted to protect her, and make sure that she wasn’t apart of the repercussions that were bound to take place. For that fact, as well as his actions later in the novel, when he can’t help but want to be around Avery, made me like him again.
Avery is such a loveable character. She has had to go through so much in her life, that you can’t help but wonder how she turned out as well as she did in life. Yes, her family has money, but that doesn’t mean that she has always had things easy. She works for what she wants, and will do anything in her power to achieve her goals and strive for the best.
Lets not forget about the pranks they each play on one another in order to get the upper hand. I often found myself spontaneously laughing out loud at the witty banter, and often over the top jokes.
Rachel Van Dkyen has done it again!!!! I simply cannot praise this novel enough! Go and pick it up for yourself today!
5/5 Stars!
I love a book that makes me laugh out loud! The banter between Lucas and Avery does this perfectly! The chemistry between them is phenomenal! This is the terrific example of a romantic comedy done right!
So for the first 28% I listened to the audio book. But for me the audio was taking to long and I just went ahead and picked up the KU edition and finished it faster. I guess audio books aren’t for me.
Plot:
Lucas Thorn cheated on his high school sweetheart on the day before the wedding. Now he has a girl for every day but Sunday. Avery Black needed a job so when one got posted she went after it without further research.
Avery and Lucas are linked by one person. Avery is still very angry about him cheating on her sister but she needs the job.
Of course I hardly read blurbs with authors such like this. It’s an automatic click. I really need to learn to read blurbs before I type them out on here after finishing the book.
I predicted almost everything. It was pretty obvious. Lucas started having a thing for Avery. Avery always had a thing for Lucas.
Characters:
Lucas- I don’t like Lucas. He’s just arrogant. Not the good cocky that I like in my males but just arrogant and asshat. Though I do feel for him while he did mess up he wasn’t the only one that should be hated for that night. Brooke should shoulder some of that hate because it takes two to tango and I feel as Brooke was a bigger back stab than Lucas. (But he did start making up for being said asshat after 40% or so.)
Everyone just seems like oh that was a Brooke thing to do but how dare Lucas do that to this family.
Avery- Licked her lips to damn much. It seemed every time Lucas was around at one point she licked her lips. It’s so annoying. Can you do something other than lick your lips. Trust me after I picked up the kindle I highlighted every time she did it.
Kayla- Was a blah
Brooke- A classic story bitch.
Somethings were just too ridiculous in this story. Don’t think I will read the second one.
First book I have read by RVD and I absolutely loved it!!! I cannot wait for the next book to come out!
Loved this series
Avery really doesn’t take Lucas’s crap, “he grinned harder. “But Saturday just quit, so—” I slapped him so hard across his right cheek that I’m lucky one of my fingers didn’t fly right off and land in someone’s wineglass. “The hell!” he swore loudly, violently, and almost teetered back against one of the expensive bottles of wine.” Lucas is obviously very protective of his sperm, “lazy?” I shoved the phone in my pocket. “My sperm are ANYTHING but lazy, alright? Hell , you’d be LUCKY to have them floating down your river!” There are times Lucas needs to placate his woman, “whoa.” He held up his hands and backed away slowly. “Yes, whatever you say. Look, I’ll call him, order you some lunch , make sure to draw you a bubble bath back at home, and let you have remote time.” I loved this book, and I can’t wait for Thatch’s book
I want Avery Black as my new best friend….. as of yesterday!
I am a big fan of Rachel Van Dyken, so knew I’d love this book before I even read it. But reading it just made my heart full.
I spent so much of this book laughing along with these characters. Rachel has an amazing way of writing her characters where you feel as though you are literally walking their journey with them.
When Avery starts working a temp job, the last person she expected to be her boss is the jerk who broke her sisters heart right before he was due to marry her.
Avery has always crushed on Lucas Thorn. He was her hero when she was a kid and he was dating her sister. He was her best friend. He was the boy who she knew she could never have because he loved her sister. And then he shattered her heart. He cheated on her sister. How could she ever look at him the same way?!
Lucas Thorn is a serial playboy. Since the moment he cheated on Kayla, he figured that he couldn’t hold a relationship together. So he has a calendar of women. A different woman for each day of the week. And it’s not called cheating when all the women know about each other. Well so he says.
But then, little, Avery Black walks into his office to start working as his secretary. Little Avery Black – the younger sister of the girl he was meant to marry. Little Avery Black who he adored as a kid. Little Avery Black that he had feelings for, that he knew he shouldn’t of had. Little Avery Black, who isn’t so little anymore…..

Cheater is a hard book for me to review. I love RVD romcoms and hoped that this would be something along the lines of the Consequences books- light, silly, fun, with a touch of heart. It had some fun moments and there are aspects to Cheater that I liked- the witty banter between Lucas and Avery, her snarkiness and sarcasm, and her friendship with Austin. But there were more issues with this book that I really didn’t care for, or understand- particularly how over-the-top and meddling his mother is, why she thought things would magically be repaired between the families if Lucas and Avery got together (this honestly completely perplexed me), and particularly Lucas’s “in your face” attitude when it came to his daily bimbos, even after Avery showed back up in his life. I wasn’t put off by the “cheating” per se, because once you get into the story you’ll understand that a little better, but throwing it in her face, after everything that happened in the past, was hard to accept.
With that said, I definitely felt a connection between Lucas and Avery. There’s a lot of shared history with them, so it bothered me how glib, at least on the surface, Lucas was towards her. I did feel bad for him, to a certain extent, because of some of the things that we learn through the book, when it comes to what happened with his engagement to her sister 4 years ago. But my biggest issue, and what really held me back from enjoying this as much as I could have, was Lucas’s age. He’s 32 years old but acts more like he’s in his mid-20s. And honestly, if he had been in his mid-20s I’d have a whole different outlook on this book. It’s hard to get into detail, without giving too much of the storyline away, but I found his actions and the way he dealt with things to be very immature. Avery is 22 and he came across closer to her age instead of a grown man a decade older. I really wish he had been 25, 26, 27 years old. I feel the story would have played out much differently if he had been a younger character, and I would have more than likely really enjoyed it.
Sometimes, as much as you want to love a book it just doesn’t happen- and you can’t force it. Sadly, this was the case for me and the book just didn’t work. I’m a big fan of RVD’s so I’ll just chalk this up to an anomaly and look forward to what she’s got coming up next.
I will be one hundred percent honest the title made me twitch. The blurb was intriguing but my disgust for that word made me hesitant. In the end my love for RVD made me do it and boy am I glad.
Society, and well me too, have a huge disdain for the word, the act, and the connotation. But to play devil’s advocate…why?
Clearly some people don’t or there wouldn’t be any cheaters right?
I absolutely loved Cheater. Me, the girl who cringed in disgust at the title, I loved it. I, the serial monogamist with previous foray into naughty “two for Tuesdays”, loved this book.
Welcome to the story of how a man broke a vow. How it broke him and those around him. See how a Cheater is made…
I love Avery. Her fire, her personality, and her down right love of food spirit animals- all these things make her special. She really is. So much so that the Cheater…is cheating on…wait, I’m not going to spill the beans.
Just know this Avery has a problem, it’s called loose tongue syndrome. When she’s nervous, random, awful things fly out of her mouth. This entire book is her fault- Lucas Thorn
A fun and wild story about family, love, and the wrong path!
I had such a great time reading this. What fun, sexy, swoony read! This was a perfect choice after having read a life changing heart wrenching series.
Light. Happy. Hot bookboyfriend.
I literally found myself LOL
Loved this book and the characters!
Not what you’re expecting which I loved. I really enjoyed this story.
I love any book by Rachel Van Dyken, and this is one of my favorites outside of her Elite series. I am currently reading the 2nd book in this series and it is even better than the first. Cheater has great character development, great story line, and I love a good happily ever after. I highly recommend…but be forewarned…once you start you won’t be able to put it down.
