‘Chasing the Duke’ is a beautifully written story, full of moments where a turn of phrase is so perfect that it literally makes you pause to appreciate the words. The heroine, Camille Bellington, is marrying Viscount Ridley purely for financial reasons – to save her home. But she has been in love with Tristan for a long time. He is 8 years older than her and was always her brother’s best friend. Camille knows that he never saw her as anything but a bit of a pest, and then he went off to war. Now that he has returned, Camille swears to herself that she will never chase after him again.
Tristan has inherited his father’s title and is now the Duke of Mercer. After the war he’s a changed man in much more personal ways, struggling to cope with all the horrors he experienced on battlefields. He rarely socializes. Tristan grew up spending a lot of time with Camille and her brother, and the aunt that basically raised them. He accepts a dinner invitation from that aunt and at it he is startled to realizes Camille is all grown up. He is sure that he is no longer fit to be in a real relationship because he is haunted by his years at war, but he finds Camille with her intelligence, wit and beauty to be a magnet for his heart and a balm for his soul. Tristan realizes that if he wants her in his life, he is going to have to do the chasing.
This book was an extremely enjoyable read. Camille is a botanist, which makes her an unusual female during her time, and makes the story even more interesting. I thought this story was as smooth as eggnog at Christmas, as effervescent as champagne in a crystal flute, and as comfortable as hot chocolate on a cold and snowy night. It’s definitely a story to savor, with just the right amount of steam. There is a wonderful happy ending, too, and some vivid secondary characters. This book is like an early Christmas gift to readers!
I received an advance copy of this story in exchange for an honest review. When I finished it, I immediately paid to pre-order a copy on Amazon, too.
Camille Bellington is marrying Viscount Ridley to save her home, even though she’s been in love with Tristan for a long time. Tristan, Duke of Mercer, is best friends with Camille’s brother. After the war he’s kept to himself and rarely socializes. Attending a dinner party hosted by Camille’s aunt, Tristan realizes Camille’s grown up. Then there’s that kiss. He’s fighting the attraction, but it’s not working. Camille’s made up her mind she’s not going to chase him anymore. Now Tristan’s chasing her.
A delightful romance with a nice flow to the story and a very charming Duke.
Gifted a copy of this book by the author.
This was a stunning story, I was captivated from the first page! Definitely deserves it’s 5 stars from me.
A war hero returns and she’s vowed to stop chasing him, and secretly loving him. He desires her but can he let his heart and soul be overtaken and heal his wounds from the war. The chemistry and passion was off the charts.
Camille and Tristan were absolutely swoon worthy. I’m gushing at how much I loved this book, the only down side is it didn’t last long enough for me.
Their story was beautifully written, the words flew off the page.
OMG – loved this book about Camille and the Duke – Tristan. He was her brothers best friend and she loved him ever since she could remember. To him she was his best friend Edwards nuisance sister. Until they meet again when he returns damaged from the war. She insists she is done with chasing the duke and she gets engaged to another. Until they kiss and she decides she can’t settle for less than this Duke but she will not marry him. He will not marry either due to the memories that torment him from the war. Well, I did need a tissue handy at some parts and really enjoyed this story like I have not enjoyed one in ages. Didn’t really want to read a Christmas story in July (lol) but so glad I did. This was a quick read and a wonderful story. I will be reading more by TS.
This is a historical romance taking place in England in the year 1815. A young lady must put aside her personal feelings and marry a man she doesn’t love in order to save her aunt’s estate. When her childhood crush and nemesis attends their party the day after her engagement, old feelings resurface and she must decide what to do about this rakish duke who she loves but can’t stand.
I had expected a sweet historical romance, with a good plot and interesting historical information woven in. This book disappointed me. I hate giving books bad reviews, because I realize that one person’s poison is another’s cup of tea, but I like informing potential readers of what to expect. This is a steamy, sometimes vile romance that is like every other romance, with not much history to it and nothing original in the plot. It is a trope, or several tropes put together actually, with not a single outstanding characteristic to tell it apart from hundreds of other similar romances. If, however, this is something you like (I know some people enjoy these types of books) then I’m sure you will find it exactly what you’re looking for. It’s too cookie-cutter for me. Two stars.
Chasing The Duke is a steamy regency romance that centers around Lady Camilla Bellington and Tristan Tierney, the Duke of Mercer who is her brother’s best friend. Camilla has loved Tris for all of her life. Heartbroken when he left for war, she turns to botany and a career to help save the family manor.
The story is a lively Christmas adventure as Tris has returned and now wants Camilla! Right after she accepts another boring man. The characters are interesting, vibrant and witty. The relationship is believable and steamy. The other characters are well drawn and fascinating on their own. The story has it all – romance, holiday times, wit and humor.
I loved this and highly recommend the book!
Camille has always been in love with Tristan but has given up and accepted a marriage proposal from someone else. Someone who doesn’t understand her interest in botany. Tristan has what we now call PTSD and doesn’t think he can have a relationship with her or anyone else.
**SPOILERS** Some parts of the story are hard to accept like how his post-war issues are immediately settled with their first night of passion. Trauma like that is not solved in one night.
She was quick to get angry with him for trying to help solve her problems with the family’s money shortage and getting her into the botanical society at a time women got no respect for intellectual accomplishments.
Overall the story is entertaining and isn’t a bad read. This is not my favorite by Ms. Sumner but is still readable.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through BookSirens and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
This was a beautiful historical read about Tristan and Camille. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t stop reading until I finished this beautiful, thrilling, wonderful love story. Camille was perfect for Tristan and she was able to calm him and help him heal. Their chemistry was off the charts. Loved this beautiful story and I can’t wait to read more by this great author. Wonderful addition to this great series.
