The phone messages waiting for Henry Pierce clearly aren’t for him: “Where is Lilly? This is her number. It’s on the site.” Pierce has just moved into a new apartment, and he’s been “chasing the dime”–doing all it takes so his company comes out first with a scientific breakthrough worth millions. But he can’t get the messages for Lilly out of his head. As Pierce tries to help a woman he has … he has never met, he steps into a world of escorts, websites, sex, and secret passions. A world where his success and expertise mean nothing…and where he becomes the chief suspect in a murder case, trapped in the fight of his life.

I loved the faults of the main character, Henry Pierce, who seems to do stupid things constantly despite being a smart man. He gets involved helping someone he’s never met and then risks his life for her. I found his strange attraction powerful and the story drew me in from the start. Another great story showing that MC can write about people …
Intriguing stand-alone thriller.
Henry Pierce moves into a new apartment after a failed relationship. He starts to receive phone calls on his new number for a woman called Lilly. He realises Lilly appears to have gone missing and Henry is drawn into her dangerous life as he tries to discover what happened to her.
Unusually for me, the major plot …
Henry Pierce is just days away from a patent and a huge meeting with a potential investor at the company he founded. However, he’s also just moved into an apartment since he has split with his fiancee. That, of course, means a new land line, and Pierce starts to get phone messages for someone named Lilly. Pierce quickly figures out that Lilly …
Michael Connelly is one of my favorite mystery writers. I have read many of his books an enjoy them immensely.
Bosch is the reason I started reading every Michael Connelly book.
Anything M Connelly writes is worth reading.
LOVED it!
I listened to the audiobook, which was an edited version of the original book. The story was engaging with a number of plot twists. A few spots were a little hard to believe the main character would act as he did, but overall, the story was credible. I kept trying to predict the outcome, but was actually surprised by the ending. Another enjoyable …
Another great read from Michel Connelly
Bosch delivers again! Love this vivid character.
He’s always a good read!
Read the whole series.
Best police procedural author in existence.
I held off reading this book for a long time because it was a stand-alone. When I did read it I was was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. Which just goes to show that a great writer like Connelly can win you over with whatever he writes.
A scientist gets a new phone number and it turns out to have belonged to a prostitute and he gets non-stop messages for her. He decides to track her down, sees enough evident to convince himself she’s been murdered, and instead of going to the police, decides to solve it himself. He was being set up to look like he murdered her. It is questionable …
Another great read by a wonderful author
Can’t go wrong ever with Connelly and Harry Bosch. I love that the novel is based in real locales, restaurants, etc. The police procedural is always on the mark.
