When author Brandt Legg announces a new series, his fans, of which I include myself, know that we won’t have to wait long for the rest of the books to appear. In this instance, rather than publishing the complete series at the same time, Legg is bringing them out monthly, more or less. The first book in the series, ‘Chasing Rain’, has everything we have come to expect from this exceptional author: great, fully fleshed-out characters, a strong plot, a breathtaking pace so fast you might find callouses on your fingers from flipping pages, intrigue and twists galore, and a deep moral challenge. This latter is going to be a crucial theme in this series, I believe.
The basic premise of the tale is simple. Billionaire tech wizard Chase Malone and his partner have developed an extremely advanced artificial intelligence program. They sold this to a competitor so they could raise the funding to embark on a secret project, which in turn allowed them to see how the misuse of their original software was to have dire consequences for the human race. Aided by his lost love Wen Sung, he embarks upon a quest to halt the dystopian future that awaits humankind.
Amidst all the action and adventures, the novel takes a hard look at artificial intelligence and the way our species often ignores the dangers, believing everything is under control, because of our innate arrogant sense of self-importance. A very entertaining and thrilling start to what I think is going to be author Legg’s best series yet. Highly recommended. I have already bought book two and am a third of the way through already.
Chasing Rain is a fast moving action adventure techno-thriller. Reading it evoked a reflection on the ways we use technology, which can be for the greater good or for bringing about the end of the world, by executing a simple line of code.
The story features Chase Malone, a young billionaire whose company developed an artificial intelligence program, struggles to stop another company, TruNeural, from using this program for corrupt purposes. His vision for using it include restoring the use of limbs. When told, “I just found out that Reno, an old friend of mine, is quadriplegic,” his promise is that with the use of his program, Reno would be able to go hiking up in the mountains. Expecting the possibility of the end of the world, trying desperately to circumvent it, drives his doubts into Apocalyptic terror.
He teams up with Wen Sung, a Chinese defector, who struggles to protect her secrets and her life from a ruthless spy and with Tess Federgreen, working on a CIA mission. With a plot that connects the dots around the globe, this is a thought-provoking page-turner.
Five stars.
This is about AI and implanting a chip into humans. They would then build more and replicate to take over the world. There’s the battle between good and evil. It’s a page turner.
“Chasing Rain” by Brandt Legg has all the markers of a great thriller, fast-paced, action-packed, twisted, unexpected bit awaiting at every turn of the page, all wrapped in easy-to-read and still intelligent, witty writing with relatable and credible characters and a plausible plot that, despite its complexity and use of artificial intelligence, remains real and eerie possible. A clear recommendation for thriller fans that appreciate using their own grey braincells along the reading.
wow this story is fill with action from start to finish. Interesting story line of just how competing things are in the chip world. I like reading this boo, polished it off in two days – i think you would like it
An interesting look at the potential down side of artificial intelligence. In the same way that atomic energy has been used against humanity, so too might artificial intelligence. A thoroughly believable premise in which humans can build expanding neural networks, developing superhuman minds. Enter the baddies who use this for nefarious purposes, while the goodies try to stop the misuse of AI.
Believable and credible science, reasonably well written but unsubtle in the goodies vs the baddies, this is an easy and entertaining read.
I read non-stop so can’t always remember the stories I have read. Still, I think this was a good one and worth a read.
Adorei. Gosto muito do autor. Tomara que dessa fonte jorre muito mais.
obrigada
Great
I never really got into this book….too much about chase-events, instead of substance.
The beginning of the book was fast-moving, with a somewhat overwhelming cast of characters being introduced, and a veritable alphabet soup of companies, agencies and governments that began to make me wonder if I cared to stick with it. However, while the pace continued to be fast, things began to tie together after that. Is it believable? Well, no, it demanded reader willingness way beyond suspension of disbelief…but I liked it as a change of pace.
Good sci-fi book. A lot of “what-if’s” to think about with this book.
A bit techy and over my head but that part was mostly irrelevant to the plot. The idea was that technology can be humanized in a good or bad way. Greed will determine who wins unless you have Wen and Chase to do your protecting. Lots of action, some heart racing spots, car chases (which definitely play better on film), and a little romance. Probably a 4.5.
Fast pace. Hard to put down interesting characters Believe able concept s. Leaves you wanting more
3+ Stars
Good plot, good characters and dialogue. Very entertaining adventure but somehow the book never completely drew me in. I’m not sure what’s missing that would have put it over the top but deeper character development might be it.
Brandt Legg never disappoints. His books take your mind on a journey where the line between reality and imagination blurs. His main character, Chase Malone, is a brilliant computer engineer who writes a program that can allow someone to walk or destroy the world. Wen Sung, a Chinese defector, is caught in the whirlwind dance with him to save us from the apocalypse.
I’ve read other books on artificial intelligence, but this one gave me the chills. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.
