Retired cop Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels and her ex-criminal husband Phineas Troutt have made a lot of enemies over the years. But none worse than The Cowboy, a gunslinging nutcase who wants to slaughter them both, and Hugo Troutt, a gang leader who has been plotting revenge against his younger brother for over a decade.Separately, these baddies are formidable. Together, they are unstoppable. But … unstoppable.
But Jack has even more hell to deal with. She and her former partner, private eye Harry McGlade, are in L.A. chasing an insane plastic surgeon who specializes in disfiguring his victims. And Jack’s colleague Tom Mankowski has problems of his own with a snuff film auteur named Erinyes.
With four psychopaths on the prowl, Jack, Phin, Harry, and Tom will need to call on some old friends if they hope to get out of LaLa Land alive…
This thirteenth Jack Daniels novel brings together villains from Konrath’s thrillers WHITE RUSSIAN, EVERYBODY DIES, and WEBCAM, along with heroes from SHOT OF TEQUILA, THE LIST, WHAT HAPPENED TO LORI, and FLEE, for the ultimate West Coast showdown.

The jack Daniels series is funny and exciting. I’ve enjoyed every one I’ve read.
4 stars for an entertaining horror/thriller. The author has assembled an impressive list of villains, including some old and 1 new bad guy, “Plastic.” Plastic was bullied as a child because he was unattractive. Now he gets revenge by kidnapping attractive people and performing plastic surgery to make them ugly.
Harry McGlade, Jack Daniels friend and private investigator, has been hired by several “Plastic” victims to find him and stop him. Harry is as outrageous as ever. He has 2 pets, a penguin and a capybara. He calls the penguin “Waddlebutt” and the capybara “Big D**k.”
Harry offers Jack a huge amount of money to help him find “Plastic.” The other villains are from Jack and Phin’s(Jack’s husband) past. They are determined to get revenge on Jack, Phin, and Tom, a friend of Jack’s. You would have to read the previous books in this 13 book series to get the back story on all of them. This is book 13 in the series and I caution you that these books have some gruesome scenes. They are not cozy thrillers.
Some quotes: Harry McGlade, describing himself: “Don’t get me wrong. I know that I’m pretty awesome. You read the part earlier about having 3 swimming pools? Who else has three swimming pools? I’m like the USA’s Homecoming King. During the live stream I had 26,521 people watching.”
Phin, on entering Harry’s armory: “If anyone needed proof that the United States has an unhealthy obsession with guns, all they had to do was take a tour of McGlade’s armory.
The master bedroom, converted into shelves and aisles of weapons and ammo and accessories, reminded me of the scene in every action movie where the hero had a gearing-up montage, picking the deadliest and most exotic firearms out of the dozens and dozens available, photographed with the same intensity of a love scene.”
Both my wife and I enjoy this series. This was a kindle unlimited book. My wife liked that 3 characters were named Chandler, Hammett, and Fleming.
I loved this book, the whole series actually! I was reading until 3:30 last night because I couldn’t put it down.
I found this book to be horribly violent.
I very seldom give a book one star….but this is the exception. I’m sorry Mr. Konrath, I’ve read other books by you and didn’t seem to have too much of a problem with your style. (gave Fuzzy Navel 4* & Origin 4* -this was disturbing, but I finished it) This one, Chaser, however, was not what I was expecting at all.
True I have not read the ones between Fuzzy Navel and Chaser, but I really don’t know if that would have prepared me for the amount of ‘graphic details’ and the foul language that I encountered so early into the book. I read maybe about 100 pages and decided I couldn’t read anymore. Sorry but this wasn’t my cup of tea. This is my opinion and hope that no one who really likes Konrath doesn’t take my word for ONE book. Make your own deductions.
Sorry, just can’t get into Mr. Konrath.
I did not like it. It was gross and jumped all around.
Too padded with rubbish
Okay, so Jack ain’t what she used to be and Harry can only be overly offensive for so long.
I like Konrath and I feel he is poking fun at himself and his characters. They are always over the top.
Was glad to see the guys from “What Happened to Lori” show up.
Chaser leaves you hanging though. You know what has to happen in the next one, of course, you don’t know who all will be involved.
