Identify the suspect?
Journalist Billy Jensen spent fifteen years investigating unsolved murders, fighting for the families of victims. Every story he wrote had one thing in common–they didn’t have an ending. The killer was still out there.
But after the sudden death of a friend, crime writer and author of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Michelle McNamara, Billy became fed up. Following a dark night, he came up with a plan. A plan to investigate past the point when the cops had given up. A plan to solve the murders himself.
You’ll ride shotgun as Billy identifies the Halloween Mask Murderer, finds a missing girl in the California Redwoods, and investigates the only other murder in New York City on 9/11. You’ll hear intimate details of the hunts for two of the most terrifying serial killers in history: his friend Michelle McNamara’s pursuit of the Golden State Killer and his own quest to find the murderer of the Allenstown Four. And Billy gives you the tools–and the rules–to help solve murders yourself.
Gripping, complex, unforgettable, Chase Darkness with Me is an examination of the evil forces that walk among us, illustrating a novel way to catch those killers, and a true-crime narrative unlike any you’ve read before.

Inspiring and sad at the same time, as not every murder will be solved. The author takes you through several cases and the methods he uses to try to solve them, and his humor and intensity are big factors in what keeps him going. It will also keep you going as you read and realize how scary the world really is.
I first started following Billy Jensen when I found out a podcast called the Murder Squad was about to start up. It sounded interesting and surprisingly I’ve never listened to a podcast before so I figured this could be the one I’d try as my first. Right from the start I was hooked! So naturally when I heard that Billy has a book coming out I was so there to get a copy. I talked a co-worker into going to the book release party with me at our local Barnes and Nobles store (another first for me). That was actually really interesting to attend even though we didn’t guess the correct killer. I picked up my copy that night. After getting to a point in life when I could find some spare time to read I knew I wanted to finally dive into Chase Darkness with me.
This book gives you a unique look into Billy’s journey from the very beginning of his investigations. I found so many aspects of how he investigated cases interesting. This book not only opened my eyes to the world of possibilities that normal citizens like myself could be doing to help but it also showed me things you could do with social media. For example, I honestly didn’t use Facebook enough to realize you could pay to place a post to reach certain people in an area or by greater details. Technology has opened the doors to endless possibilities to helping in unsolved cases.
It was nice to be able to get inside Jensen’s head and see how he got to where he is today. The book shows you Jensen’s childhood and growing up how he got started investigating. It shows you several cases that he assists law enforcement with. There are also parts about how he met people such as Michelle McNamara, Karen and Georgia (My Favorite Murder) and Paul Holes, etc.
“The world didn’t need another story about the Zodiac Killer or Jack the Ripper. The murders in the shadows add up to a hell of a lot more than the murders in the spotlight. The shadows are where I need to tread, because that’s where the problem lay. The blood of the forgotten was just as red as the “famous” victims.”
This was one part of the book that has stuck with me and I had to stop when I first read it. There is so much truth behind his words. Too much time the media wastes on replaying the same stories of Ted Bundy and JonBenet Ramsey. There are so many unsolved cases out there with victims who deserve their stories to have closure just as much as anyone else. This is why I have become such a fan of what Billy Jensen and Paul Holes do with the Murder Squad. It truly is a great thing they are doing to try to help those victims and their families find the ends to their stories. If anyone hasn’t picked up a copy of Chase Darkness with me I HIGHLY recommend grabbing a copy today! Also please go listen to an episode of the Murder Squad, I promise you will not be disappointed.
Billy Jensen is a master storyteller and a brilliant “detective”. If you have any interest in true crime, this is the book for you! Jensen starts from the beginning of his writing career and takes you through the major events that have modeled him into the man he is today. This story is riveting and emotional. From losing Michelle McNamara to solving the case of the Green Hoodie Man, you will learn just how hard it is to live in the world of unsolved mysteries.
This book was truly amazing. i loved how we can still find people in this world that aren’t so self-absorbed and go to lengthways to help others.
From tragedies rise empathy always, especially for a journalist that has to write about said horror crimes and always having in mind the family or people closed to those deceased. After witnessing so many unsolved crimes, he takes his own work on the field and shows us how, with a little willing and with a bit of more awareness, some clues can help to solve mysteries.
I’ll be recommending this book to anyone who enjoys a really good read.
