I met a random stranger in a coffee shop and felt an instant connection between us.
That was five years ago.
Why couldn’t I forget him?
Now, I have news.
Turns out that Charles, my reserved and mysterious crush is the heir to one of the largest business dynasties in the US.
Unfortunately, his fortune made him a target.
According to his family, Charles’ is now in Ireland. He’s been lured in by a narcissistic and cunning cult leader with a troubling reputation.
His family wants me to go undercover and extricate Charles from the cult.
Going up against a psychopathic cult leader is terrifying and dangerous!
But what if Charles is my destiny and we’re meant to be together?
Only one way to find out… I’m going in!
Charlie is the first installment in Elin Peer’s contemporary romance series Cultivated. You might know Elin Peer as the author of the bestselling series, Men of the North, Clashing Colors, and the Slave Series. Her books are fast-paced, thought-provoking, and always offer humor and a solid romance story at the core.

In Elin Peer style, she has given us a storyline that immediately pulled me in and had me planted right in the middle. This wasn’t just a reading experience. This became an all-consuming mental movie that I felt a part of, experiencing all the pain, fear, emotion and chemistry with each of the characters. Oh, and the characters? They are so perfectly flawed I felt like they could be part of my inner circle. I’ve been a fan of Elin Peer since her first book and I can already tell, I’m hooked on this series from the very beginning. You absolutely don’t want to miss this one!
When I want an intense read that is so much more than it appears at first glance I turn to this author. I know when I read her books there’s always more to it than meets the eye. This time we get to look at Charlie and Charles. She thinks his tics are adorable and is drawn to him. Charles is socially inept along with a long list of other titles. Each time they meet what’s said in his head is most definitely different than what comes out. From here this author takes us to an entirely unexpected twist as of course she is well known for doing.
Ms Peer uses her background to take us into the world of mind control and a narcissistic psychopath. Yeah that’s what I said. It’s an amazing read and it is a slippery slope but this author is used to that. She doesn’t take on an easy topic or when she does it’s so many levels to be unraveled to get to the truth and the ending. This is no different. I read this in one sitting and yeah that means I put the world to the side for 6-8 hours while I consumed this. I do mean consumed because with this author’s books that’s the only way. Get ready because this is just the start of this series and it will only get better.
This is the first book in a new series and boy does it start with a bang.
Liv met Charles in college and was drawn to him. Charles was attached of Liv but with all his problems he doesn’t act on them. 5 years later he has become involved in a cult but like most people in that situation he does not realize it. Liz is sent by his grandfather to get him out and that when the pages start to fly. Super intense and sometimes hard to read. It’s scary to think someone can have that much control over people to manipulate them do anything. There is a explosive conclusion. I’m anxious to read more of this series. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
If you are looking for something to read that grabs
you right from the first page and keeps you on the
edge of your seat than you are absolutely going to
love this book and if the rest of the series is anything
like this book than it’s going to be an amazing series.
Just to give you a taste of the plot without giving it away
Liv ran into Charles in college and then five years later Charles
grandfather asked her for help .
If you want to know what the problem is you will have to read it for yourself.
Fantastic chplot and chemistry between the characters.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
This was a epic way to start a series!! I haven’t read many cult type books but Elin’s writing is so good in this story that you could feel the raw emotion behind it. It lets you realize how easily it is to fall in line behind someone when you are grasping for what you think is more and how easily someone can be manipulated in a weak moment. The romance in this story took a back seat to the suspense factor and I really enjoyed that fact. The way this ended has me already wanting to dive into the rest of the series!!
I voluntarily reviewed a advanced readers copy of this book
Charles “Charlie” met Charlotte “Charlie” later, Liv (she’s got a lot of variations to her name) briefly in college.
Five years later, Liv is sent by his wealthy grandfather to retrieve Charlie. Charlie has Asperger’s. He’s a professor in Ireland and has let Conor’s tentacles wrap insidiously tight around him as he’s an heir.
Steamy, realistic, deliciously descriptive and a lyric ode to Ireland.
Highly recommend.

Love the location of Charlie & Liv’s story, setting the foundation for this series – so looking forward to the next story!
Elin Peer delivers again! Definitely recommend this book!
Ms. Peer has started another series with amazing characters and back story. Charles and Liv are the main characters in this prequel. The depth has you knowing them, and many of the supporting characters, as she builds the way to future installments. The tragedy will pull at your heart strings. The romance between Charles and Liv; I just loved it. Charles was so insecure, and out-going Liv, as well, which is why: I loved the five years ago and the now between them. They are an amazing couple. I think you’ll agree!
Charlie-Cultivated #1 by Elin Peer
OH HOW MUCH I MISSED ELIN!!!!
I haven’t read a book in a while. Being unemployed for most of the year, you kind of don’t want to look at any word after applying for jobs all day. I love reading the great adventures that Peer writes. So I’ve missed a lot of her great books she authored. Don’t worry, I’ll go back and read Peer’s Men of the North series. Because I enjoy her writing so much, the minute I started reading Charlie-Cultivated #1 I knew that I was going to go right through it. Did it in 3 days.
She surprised me from the get go. Introducing the characters in a flashback and have no idea what is going to happen. Charlie who is so adorable with his shyness, nervous tics seeing a gorgeous girl who is also named Charlie. She steals his coffee because she thought it was her hot coco. This introverted man is embarrassed, yet is enthralled with her.
Five years later, Charles is now in Ireland. He has met a man named Connor, who lead him to stay in Ireland. Charles is more confident. He now lives at the “Red Manor Group”. A place that has characteristics of being in scientology. Charles has cut off ties with his only family member left, his grandfather who lives in a wealthy suburb of Chicago. (And since I was born and raised in Chicago, a true portrayal of the city.)
Enter in the girl that he fell in love with 5 years ago, Charlie who uses her real name now, Liv. She is asked by Charles’s grandfather to go to Ireland and bring him home. Take him away from this cult that his grandfather has years of researching. Kind of a WTF reaction from Liv on how would Charles’s grandfather even know who she is. She was given an expense-paid trip to Ireland to save the grandson.
From the research and investigations from his grandfather, Liv was suppose to be his last hope. It was like nothing had changed between Liv and Charles. They both remember the chemistry they had for each other, and it took off again when she came to Ireland. Let me tell you how HOT their reunion was.
While the two are on top of the world, Liv then is introduced to the man Charles thinks is pretty much God, Connor. After Liv learns about the Red Manor Group experiences, she fell in love with the children of the group. It shows how lovely Liv’s character is. She cares for the children of this cultish environment. All of this is happening while Liv is connected with the private investigator in Ireland. Learning how they and Charles’ grandfather want to take Connor down.
The beautiful landscape of Ireland was a nice touch in this novel. The dialogue between the strong Irish dialect might be a little hard to read for some, yet I had a little advantage from taking a dialect class in college. I had fun reading out loud some of the scenes of the Irish private investigators to show how I really need to work on my Irish dialect.
It’s so hard to give a full synopsis of Charlie-Cultivated #1 without giving away this astounding thriller surprise in the story. A huge thunderbolt that will shock you as you are shaking your head in disbelief. But that’s how Peer really digs at your heart with her fully created characters that you have so much emotion for.
I am truly happy to be back and have enough time to read Peer’s excellence in her novels. This is truly a great start of a new series I will be excited to read. Between reading Men of the North series of course.
I received a free ARC copy to give an honest review.
Wow, just Wow! The plot was well written and flowed smoothly from page to page and the characters were written with such great detail and depth that I had a very hard time putting this book down!
This is one of Elin Peer’s best books to date. I own all of her other books and each one gets better. I loved how she changed gears a little bit with this book. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series. You don’t know what is going to happen next, so you keep turning the pages and end up with an explosive ending. I liked how Elin Peer always brings her A-game and this book is not different she keeps the reader interested the entire time and you can’t put the book down until you finish it. Elin Peer is one of my favorite authors and I can’t wait to see where she takes us next.
The thing I love most about Elin Peer’s work is just how darn unpredictable it is.
I’ve been stuck in the reading doldrums. You wouldn’t suspect from my review list because I have managed to finish a few books over the last two weeks, but you wouldn’t believe just how many books I’ve started and DNF’d. Book after book had left me struggling to connect with the characters or just plain care about what would happen next. Until I picked up Charlie, and in this I found a book that I didn’t want to put down. From the very first chapter I was totally engaged by both Liv and Charlie, desperate to know how their story would unfold.
At one point I was certain I knew what would cause friction between Charlie and Liv, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Ha! Just how wrong was I, and that is the beauty of this author’s work. The journey she takes you on is never the obvious one, yet it is always absolutely the perfect one and one where I wouldn’t change a thing.
I found myself totally smitten by both main characters, so much so that I cast aside my usual issues with super speedy (though not quite insta) falling-in-love, totally embracing the speed with which this couple formed a connection. It helped that the pair had some prior history but mainly it was the fantastic writing that engaged my emotions along with my mind. There are depths and layers to this story, the unwrapping of which made this a book that will stay with me long after I read the last lines.
This book had me grinning, tearing up, outright sobbing, but becoming more and more shocked, and finally filled with pure horror and revulsion! I call this book by one of my favorite authors a must-read, highly recommended!
Charlie is an absolute winner for me. Charlie and Liv will have you shaking your head and asking so many questions while reading his book. The characters were so believeable, the emotions and the situations had you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next. The story line and the issues that are shown in the book examines how what happen to Charlie and Liv could portentially happen to anyone looking for something to hold on to. I was given an Advance Readers Copy as a gift from the author without obligation. i have read and I am offering an honest review.
This book had me on edge. I was so sure I wouldn’t like it. I don’t care for books about cults. I loved the hero and heroine. This was a great, suspenseful story. I stayed up till 4 am to finish it. The secondary characters were interesting and like-able. The children are so wonderful. I love Charles grandfather he reminds me of someone I know and love. Now I’m hooked on this series.I can’t wait to see where this author leads us next. I highly recommend. Told my bestie about it too!
Oh my gosh! The woman can write!!! Elin Peer, I want to be you when I grow up. On second thought, I’d rather just enjoy the fruits of YOUR labor! Every story I’ve read from Mrs. Peer I have loved (and I have read them all). These are romance stories, but oh so much more. In this new series we get to discover the world of cults and master manipulators. Yes, you read that right. Like I said, it is a love story, but so much more. If you aren’t familiar with Elin Peer’s books, you need to get yourself familiar. This is as good a place to start as any! Seriously, what are you waiting for? Once click right now!!!
What a great start to a series. I love this book. It’s a page-turner that keeps your interest from page one through to the end.
Wow!! After reading and loving the Men of the North series (in my top 2 favorite series ever!) by Elin Peer I was excited to read Charlie. I don’t think I have ever read a book that elicited so many different emotions from me. There were moments where I laughed, cried, yelled, and even curled into a ball under my blanket in suspense. I absolutely fell in love with Charlie and Liv and I look forward to learning more about them in the other books in this series. Elin has a heartwarming way of weaving new and old characters into each book, which is my favorite part of reading a series because I always want to know more! You won’t regret meeting Charlie and Liv and I promise you will fall in love with them!
This was an amazing read! The story will have you emotionally involved and in the corner of Charlie and Liv. You are drawn in and feel like you are right there as the story unfolds. I know that this is the start of another great series and can’t wait until the next story evolves! I voluntarily agreed to receive an ARC of this story for an honest review.
This is a fantastic read. The first book in this series, has great World Building. And the way the author brings out that Charlie has health issues is a fantastic way of story building and a very creative mind. The scenes are written to where as you read the characters come to life and jump right off the page, to where you can picture them as you read. There are twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. I definitely recommend this read.
