I can’t even imagine what I’d do with a man like him. He wants no part of a girl like me. So how come he can’t stay away, and I can’t stop thinking what if?KaylaLife isn’t easy. Single mom, minimum wage, family drama. You know the story. I’ve come a long way in a short time, though, and it’s all worth it. For Jimmy. My grumpy little boy. Then a hot biker drops into our lives, tempting me into … drops into our lives, tempting me into wanting more. I want to go for it, but how can I trust myself when I’ve screwed up so badly in the past?
Charge
I’m an easy kind of guy in a rough world. Yeah, I got a record, but I also got my club, my ride, and the open road. Life is good.
I don’t need no hassle, and from recent experience, women are the very definition. I sure don’t need to be messin’ with a girl young enough to get carded, cartin’ along a six-year-old.
So why is she livin’ all up in my head? And how am I gonna stop my past from screwin’ up this good thing?
Charge is a 70,000-word, single mom, older man/younger woman, motorcycle club romance. It’s the first book in the Steel Bones Motorcyle Club series. This novel is intended for adult readers (18+) due to strong language, violence, possible triggers, and explicit intimate scenes.
Standalone. HEA.

Just gonna come right out and say I’m biased. Being a ‘Burgh girl I’ve understandably got a soft spot for stories set in western PA. But that’s where the bias ends because this book deserved all those stars.
I wasn’t sure about Charge at first. He’s still hung up on his ex a good 30% in and it comes through loud and clear in his POV. He also doesn’t explain anything about the club to Kayla and she gets thrown to the wolves at her first club party. Despite this I warmed to his character – he needed to make some life/attitude changes and he did that.
Kayla can come off as weak but I totally understood why. The circumstances of her life were really sad.
These two people really complimented each other. Charge needs to take care of, and be responsible for, others and Kayla needs protected and supported. I loved Jimmy, Charge’s dad, and pretty much all of the side characters. I even liked the ex by the end but I’m not sure how I feel about that. I’d categorize this as a slow burn and looks like there will be an overarching storyline in the series. I’m definitely checking out the next.
I pretty much read this in one sitting. It’s a bit less MC focused than a lot of the MC books I read. Charge is one of the most laid back bikers I’ve ever come across. I liked the side characters and even Jimmy. Kayla is quite naive but she’s been through a lot. But she finds her backbone at the perfect time. Will be excited to see what else the Steel Bone have to offer
This book combines two of my favorite tropes : MC and single parent.
Kayla is a single teen mom, and while she comes from a rich family, her father and stepmother do nothing to help her raise her son. They’re just waiting for an opportunity to take him away from her. At 21, she’s finally in a place where she can (barely) live alone with Jimmy, her son. It broke my heart to read about her situation, a parent should love and protect, not tear you apart and set you aside when you don’t live up to their expectations. The fact that her parents let her struggle, instead of help her build a future for herself and her little boy, while threatening her to take him away, broke my heart.
Charge is instantly attracted to his Pops new neighbor, but when he realizes she’s a mother, he backs away. He doesn’t want children, and doesn’t feel like messing with the mother of a little boy with a permanent scowl on his face.
Thought fate has other plans, and the Steel Bones biker slowly finds himself drawn to both mother and son. While sexy and steamy, this book pulled on my heartstrings for the way he took care of Kayla and Jimmy. Kayla is such a wonderful mother, but needs to find herself as a woman and with Charges help, she’ll slowly come out of her shelf.
Then there’s Jimmy, a sweet little boy, who sets out to protect and take care of his mother. He’s not an overly friendly boy, but he’s intuitive. He’s becoming fast friends with his older neighbor, and blooms under the guidance of two good man. This book is a reminder that a good job and a fancy house does not make a good man, Jimmy feels more safe and himself with a stranger than his own grandfather.
I absolutely love this story, I’m looking forward to read the next one in the series.
I only meant to read the first sentence to taste a little bit of the book’s flavor. Next thing I know, it’s 5:00 AM. Time to get up. Lunch break, I grabbed it back up. I devoured this story. The fascination occurred through the relateableness of the characters and their relationships with each other. The dialect, slang and accent spellings brought the dialogue to life and made them seem so real. It was the perfect storm of excellent writing transformed into the truest form of reading pleasure.
A new author and a great MC storyline! I’m hooked and can’t wait to read the next one in this series! It’s definitely worth the read.
Yet another excellent read!
I’m quickly becoming a big fan of Cates work! This series is just so gripping!
This book is Charge and Kayla’s story…
Charge is coasting along. Not much gets him riled, he’s very chill (although he is most definitely NOT someone you want to cross!) and he’s a rap sheet so long, his nickname is Charge!
Anyway, suddenly there’s this girl moving in next to his Pops, cute as all out, a backside like a peach, she’s his dream….until in barrel’s her 6year old son!
I have to say – my heart broke for her, she’s young and she’s had it tough. She only has one friend (I’d love her story!! Sue rocks!) and her family don’t deserve her.
Well, what happens when the laid back biker meets the single mum?….you gotta read this to find out but trust me, it’ll be worth it!!
Another excellent read
4 Charge Stars
Cate C Wells is a new author to me and I was delighted to charge right into this series and get to know this new MC.
Charge has paid his dues to his MC and now he just wants to get on with his job. He works hard and plays harder. After being dumped it’s time for him to play the field.
Kayla is out to prove that she is well capable to raise her son Jimmy without any help. She may be young but he is her world and she will do anything for him. So why is she so attracted to her new neighbour. He’s a big bad MC biker. She should be running the other way.
But both seem to be drawn together. This was such an entertaining read and I can’t wait to read more in this series.
A sweet, endearing, and heartfelt journey to go on with Kayla and Charge. That’s not to say that it was all flowers and candy but it was definitely charming. I enjoyed this story and looked forward to reading more from this author.
A new to me author and I really enjoyed this story. Kayla had had it rough, you just don’t realise how tough until she spills her story to Charge. By which time he is in deep and ready to end those who hurt her.
But she is a fighter too, she has Jimmy, her son and is barely getting by but she is determined. And with Charge, his Pops and brothers behind her, she may finally have the family she wants.
It’s not going to be easy though, the family that is supposed to love and protect her no matter what (her father) is the one determined to take it all away.
My heart!! Can’t wait to read more from this author.
Very good story. The only little bit that I didn’t particularly enjoy was Kayla’s sexual inexperience. That sort of ruined it for me.
Otherwise, I enjoyed Charge and Kayla’s story. Harper was a nice twist, though there was a question I had which may be answered in later books, but Harper says something about “Didn’t Heavy tell you..” but they never go back to it…
But overall, great read.
Kayla is doing her best to raise her young son Jimmy but it has been hard and she is doing her best to be independent and not under her parents thumb. Moving to a new apartment is part of her plan but having a biker hanging out next door was not part of it.
Charge puts on his charm trying to flirt with Kayla but when he realizes she is a single mom he decides to leave her alone. Problem is he cant stop thinking about her and every time he visits his dad he sees her or her son. His ex has not helped with his problem of moving on, he thought she was the one and she traded him in for a richer upgrade and it still pisses him off. Charge needs to figure out if he can move past her betrayal or if he is just going to give up but one thing he knows for sure he wants to see where things lead with Kayla.
This was good some of the grammar was different in the beginning but once you get used to it it works. I thought Kayla was great, she is a fighter and her back story was unique. Charge I liked a lot he had his own issues which left him a bit insecure which was a nice twist in a biker story. Entertaining, definitely checking out more in the series.
This was a very interesting twisted read. I love the older man younger woman add a son to it mix. The added bonus of pops was a great humor aspect. Charge gets a fast lesson in fatherhood and Peaches gets a fast lesson in what a ‘Real’ family is supposed to be like.
