Thankfully, he’s got Shelby Carter in his world to keep him—and his house—camera-ready. Part confidante, part master chef, Shelby is his best friend and the only one who knows the real Liam.Pampered, pretty, and … Liam.
Pampered, pretty, and often puzzled, Liam and his antics keep her on her toes, and there is never a dull moment living with him.

For her.
Is Liam up for the part?
more
Shelby is Liam’s best friend – his confidante, his life manager, his chef, his everything. Until one day Liam starts seeing MORE in her, something EXTRA . He knows Shelby is going to kill him when she finds out he’s in love with her. He can’t possibly step over that line because it may mean he’d lose her. Can he?
Shelby has always thought of Liam as just a guy. Her best friend, yes, but not more. She doesn’t understand why the paps fawn over him because to her he’s just her sweet, if slightly clueless, but with a big heart, best friend and boss. Until a zing happens and it bothers her because she cannot lose him after she’s already lost everything else she loves, with the exception of her beloved brother, Everett, who is Liam’s manager. Will these two idjits ever get on the same page?!
I loved this sweet and sexy friends to lovers romance. Liam and Shelby are one of the sweetest, most adorable couples to come down the turnpike in possibly forever. Their chemistry is nice and hot and the development of their feelings is organic and realistic. I love how much Liam grows up and becomes the man Shelby needed and deserved, but didn’t change his big heart. And I love that Shelby is such a sweetheart who never fawned over her Hollywood golden boy best friend. I hope that Everett’s story is next, because that man is awesome!
I’m a big fan of stories about movie stars, so I particularly enjoyed Melanie Moreland’s “Changing Roles.” I especially liked how different it was from so many of the previous books I’ve read about behind-the-scenes Hollywood. The focus here was not so much about an actor’s life on set or attending glamorous events, but rather how the press and public attention impacts them and their loved ones. There are a number of downsides to fame that I don’t think I fully understood until reading this story.
I absolutely adored the book’s male lead, Liam, who was incredibly funny, caring, and sweet. His inner thoughts made me laugh so many times, but I think my favorite scene was when he was trying to decide if he should go and apologize to the female lead, Shelby, while she was working in the kitchen. He was initially concerned because Shelby had “access to knives there,” but quickly shrugged off those concerns and decided that he could handle whatever Shelby did because he was “like a ninja.” I also appreciated how protective Liam became after he finally realized that he was in love with Shelby. His relationship with her helped him mature and finally become the strong, capable man he was meant to be.
Shelby was also a wonderful lead character and deserved to be treasured by a man as wonderful as Liam, especially after the way her jerk of an ex-husband treated her. I liked that she always treated Liam as if he were just an average guy, not a celebrity, and their banter was quite funny. They were best friends first and neither of them expected to fall in love, but they really were perfect for each other.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I will certainly be reading more of Ms. Moreland’s work in the future.
*ARC provided by the author via Candi Kane PR. All opinions expressed are my own.
I love everything Melanie writes and this one was different yet amazing just like all the rest.
Liam, he’s an actor and he is in need of a new housekeeper.
Shelby is a woman in need of a change so voila she becomes Liams new housekeeper.
She keeps him in line and through it all they discover that maybe there is something there between them.
They are a fun amazing couple. They compliment each other well. When you think you have everything someone comes along and makes you realize that maybe you didn’t have it all.
Changing Roles was a boss/employee, best friend’s sister/friends-to-lovers romance. The hero, Liam Right, is a 28-year old British turned Hollywood actor. He has a Peter Pan complex that is difficult to get past. He is very immature for his age and a bit spoiled and helpless. The heroine, Shelby, is fresh from a painful divorce. Due to this, she has a lot of insecurities. Her brother, Everett, who also happens to be Liam’s manager and friend suggests to Liam that he hire Shelby. She needs a job and a fresh start and Liam needs a new housekeeper/cook. After passing the test, Shelby is hired and now works for Liam. They become not only employer/employee, but also friends. She learns his likes and quirks. She is a bit of a mother figure to him even though she is only 5 years older than him, taking care of him as well as cooking and baking. What happens when lines blur?
I honestly struggled to push through and read the entire book. I didn’t feel the feels nor the connection between Liam and Shelby. Also, Shelby’s constant struggles with her insecurities, even after she was repeatedly reassured, was a bit too much for me. I did like the way Liam’s character improves and matures towards the end. The plot had potential but it drags out a little bit too much for me. It picks up toward the end, but it was too little too late. I did enjoy the secondary characters. They added depth and laughs to the story.

The Role of a Lifetime
Changing Roles is the kind of rom com I love to read. It has alluring characters, self deprecating humor, effortless banter, and smoldering attraction.
Melanie Moreland brings all the emotion and passion I have come to expect from her work. She has mastered the art of ensnaring her readers into her story, then smoothly inserting a plot twist that further endears her characters to them. It is an emotionally jarring yet apt turn of events. The path never feels forced or false. Rather it is inherent to the story.
Liam is so much more than a pretty face and easy charm. He only allows a trusted few people see his true heart and humor. Shelby is a nurturer. She thrives on taking care of those close to her, especially Liam. He brings out her silly side and she brings out his maturity. Together they are sublime. Liam is swoony and Shelby is perfect for him!
Liam and Shelby’s friendship is precious and love takes them by surprise. Yet, their transition from friends to lovers was organic and realistic. Life and love are not smooth journies. However, their faith in one another and the power of love is awe inspiring. Smashingly, brilliant read!
Liam is such a lovable, oblivious man. It was entertaining to watch him fall in love with Shelby. He so needed someone like her to ground him.
Changing Roles is a sweet story to fall in love. Two strangers forming a friendship that suddenly turns into more without them realizing it.
The moment they admit their feelings somehow everything looks the same.
“” Sometimes you miss what is right in front of you. It’s scary.” She had no idea how right she was with that statement.”
I loved how easy it was for them to start building a relationship and how easy they understood each other from the beginning.
Shelby and Liam are fun and sweet together. They are just what I needed right now. Hopefully we get to know more about certain characters.
Melanie Moreland never disappoints…..
Changing Roles was a fab friends-to-lovers story that was packed with humour, heat, heart and just a little angst.
I adored Liam and his realisation about how he felt about Shelby had him changing steadily but quietly. The character is British and I thought for a Canadian author Melanie did a great job on his language and humour, it’s not often that a non-Brit captures the essence and peculiarities of such a character!
Shelby was awesome. After the end of a marriage gone wrong she ends up in LA with the help of her family. From the minute she meets Liam they hit it off and they soon become great friends who have a wonderful relationship… until things start to change for both of them.
I got Shelby’s apprehension about her age and what people would say about her but I loved how Liam thought about her and his lack of concern for others opinions. They were a perfect pair and balanced each other so well.
A great supporting cast of characters, fantastic banter and nicknames between the MCs and some incidents, that sadly are not fiction in real life for some, all added up to a 5* read for me and one that I would happily recommend.
Liam and Shelby give me LIFE in Changing Roles by Melanie Moreland! This friends to lovers romance has it all…laughs, swoon-worthy moments and sexiness that had me hooked from the first chapter! I loved Liam and Shelby’s witty banter and their chemistry literally had me smiling through the entire book!
Liam is a man-boy who never seemed to grow up. He is a Hollywood A-lister, the “golden boy” with people to do everything for him.
When he realized his feelings for Shelby are more than that of an employer, he makes an effort to show her than he can be more man than boy.
“He lifted an eyebrow. “It sounds as if Peter Pan is growing up.”
I rolled my eyes. I hated that nickname, although at one time, I deserved it. “About bloody time, I think.”
I’ll never think of orange juice in the same way!!! This story has lots of fun banter and plenty of both heat and sweet!
-4Stars!-
A new category for Melanie – RomCom and I loved it. I was laughing all through the book. The main character loves pickles and In n Out Burger. His obsession with both will definitely keep you laughing. As always, Melanie writes a great cast of characters that make you feel more and want more.
A famous movie star who doesn’t think about love and a housekeeper who isn’t ready for new love… What will happen? Changing Roles tells the sweet story of Liam and Shelby who slowly fall for each other. I just love it.
Liam is a famous movie star who loves his job. But there are parts of the celebrity lifestyle he’s done with; people taking advantage of him, crazy fans and meaningless chitchat. When Shelby starts working for him, she’s a breath of fresh air. Shelby is recovering from a bad break up, and in no mood for romance. Working for Liam (and taking care of him) is just what she needs. Liam and Shelby become close friends, until they start to see each other in a different way.
I just love Liam. Yes, he’s a famous guy with loads of money, but he’s still a sweet, normal guy. I love that he’s not bragging about conquests and all, he’s done with those things. I love how he is with Shelby; you see him falling in love, but he doesn’t want to see it. It’s cute. Shelby is a sweetheart who deserves a real guy to love her, to fight for her. Liam doesn’t show up at the right time, but he’s just irresistible. I love them for each other.
Like a lot of other books by Melanie Moreland, Changing Roles is mostly told from the guy’s POV, in this case Liam’s. We get some chapters from Shelby’s POV, but we’re inside Liam’s head the most. The story of Liam and Shelby is a standalone, but there are a few openings for other books. Changing Roles is a sweet story with a wee bit of drama (otherwise it would be to much sugar and sexy rainbows), something I love after having read some darker books. I need more books like this, with a sweet leading couple who deserve all the love in the world.
I’m not surprised this book was amazing. Melanie Moreland usually knocks it out of the park for me. And I’m glad to have had the awesome opportunity to receive this amazing ARC.
Okay so, Liam was the kind of man-candy you can’t wait to sink your teeth in. Not only is he flaming HOT, but he’s got an English accent. And if that wasn’t enough to get you hot-and-bothered he’s a Hollywood (A-list) actor. *SWOON* Gosh I loved him. He wasn’t perfect; he was kind of a pampered prince but that didn’t take away from his charming character.
Insert Shelby, Liam’s managers sister. She is smart, and essentially amazing. When the stars align and Shelby and Liam work together she softens him and gives him direction without him knowing. Eventually the two can’t stay away from each other. They form a friendship that has more spark than a broken cable. But can they weather the cons of Liam’s STARDOM? Will they explore their growing connection and take a risk on a love of a lifetime?
Final thoughts…
Loved this story. I laughed throughout. Loved the secondary characters as well. Loved Melanie’s delivery; she always comes through with her way of writing. Incredible read!!!
Title: Changing Roles
Author: Melanie Moreland
Genre: Rom-com
My rating: 5 ++
Peter Pan to Alpha man and all in between!
First I wanted to cuddle Liam, mother and take care of him but he had Sara for that and she did her job well.
Then I laughed with them because omg there was laughter, I may never be able to drink OJ again.
Then for a second I may have hated Melanie but I think it was only for a sentence or two.
Then my heart hurt but during this hurt Liam came into himself, became a take charge alpha that we all love.
This story is about admitting love, taking the chance and enjoying the ride all the while dealing with outside drama.
Liam and Sara may just be my new favorite couple along with all of their friends and family!
What a refreshing story! I loved Liam before I finished Chapter 1… and by the end of the book… I was TOTALLY in love with Liam! LOVE the chemistry… LOVE the story! LOVE THE AUTHOR!
When the Peter Pan of Hollywood meets the one girl who doesn’t fall for his adorable British charm and ridiculously handsome face, he does the only thing he can do. Becomes her best friend. When Shelby had hit rock bottom, Hollywood playboy Liam gave her a job and more importantly, his friendship. Now lines are blurred as Liam realizes what his true feelings are.
I read this entire book with a HUGE smile on my face!! Liam is completely adorable in his own bumbling manner and Shelby is his perfect sassy compliment. I loved how they grew together into their own happily ever after. Great secondary characters, a very compelling storyline and some truly laugh out loud moments made me read late into the night.
Once again Melanie Moreland stole my heart with these characters and this story!
I’ll never think of pickles the same way again. But I will stock up when I reread this gem.
I thoroughly enjoyed Changing Roles and loved the banter between Liam and Shelby, our hero and heroine. Liam was looking for someone to ‘manage’ him and his house. Shelby’s interview was a great meet cute, because our leading man loves food. He asks her if she could make him cupcakes, deli sandwiches, and biscuits to which she simply replied yes.
Liam tends to ‘cock it up real good’ creating sticky situations quite often by sticking his foot in his mouth. His intentions are pure but also a bit unconventional because he’s used to her taking care of him, not the other way around. The banter and relationship between the two was the best part of the story – they had me rooting for them the entire time I devoured the book.
Liam is also British! I loved imagining what his voice sounded like while I read. I adored all the British terms and how he enjoyed annoying his friend and manager with his “English-speak”. I imagined Shelby as a lovely, soft spoken, yet sassy lady. It’s rare to get that combination in today’s heroine.
And last but not least, I loved the Thor reference. You need to read it to understand, but this same exact thing happened to me and it only made me fall more in love with Changing Roles. Melanie Moreland has done it again – had me captivated and in stitches all night long because I was unable to put this book down after I started reading it. I am feeling the book hangover today but it was worth it.
This was a fun friends to lover book. Lots of chuckling while reading this crazy brit and his antics.
Liam is on the top of his career these days, Hollywood’s golden boy. But in reality he is just a quiet guy who likes things a certain way. He does everything he can to keep himself out of the media and prying eyes. When he finds himself in need of a new housekeeper, he give his managers sister a try. Soon they are fast friends and he is enjoying being home more than away.
Shelby is a strong woman, who doesn’t like to be looked after and given things. She is determined to do things for herself after her husband leaving her. She is just looking to stand on her own feet and be in change of her own life. She is thankful for the change Liam has given her. She enjoys his company and looking after him.
As they realize that their feeling are more than they ever thought possible. There are many concerns and it take some time. Could this really happen? Shelby’s concerns were very real. Could she let him in? Would they give this a go? How would they survive the media and all the troubled it brings?
I enjoyed the story and the characters, both primary and secondary. It was a slow burn romance with loads of laughs. It was fun watching Liam go from the one being looked after to the one doing the looking after someone.
*** Advanced copy provided for a honest review.***
Changing Roles is a stand alone friends to lovers romance by Melanie Moreland. Some have called this a rom-com and while the hero definitely keeps us chuckling, I don’t want to call it a rom-com. Because to me, it was so much more. There was so much heart in this book. I loved both of the main characters so much, as well as the secondary characters.
Liam Wright is a twenty eight year old Hollywood movie star. He found his way into acting pretty easily and found success quickly. Liam was nicknamed a modern day Peter Pan. He just never seemed to grow up. He was completely dependent on those around him to take care of him such as his hectic schedule, public appearances, and the many other things that go with being a successful actor. At home, all he wanted was someone to take care of his house and make him turkey sandwiches and cupcakes whenever he wanted them. Because he loved turkey sandwiches and cupcakes. He found that when his manager, Everett’s sister Shelby, came to work for him.
Shelby Carter is thirty three years old. Shelby is a very independent, head strong woman who doesn’t like asking for help. But six months ago when her life fell apart, she had to ask her brother for help. That’s when she found herself working for Liam.
Liam might have been Shelby’s boss, but their relationship was so much more. Yes, she cooked for him, did his laundry, took care of the house. But they had become best friends, confidants, movie buddies. They laughed together, ate together and lived together. She found the peace she needed in Liam’s home and for Liam, she made his house a home. As you already know, though, that day comes, for both of them, when their eyes finally open and they realize that their feelings towards the other are so much more than friendship.
Did I mention that Liam was British? Oh yes! So add the British accent to your best sexy muse and there you have Liam. Liam knows he’s going to have to work to convince Shelby to take a chance on him. Now, believe me when I say that Liam made a mess at first of trying to win Shelby over. But he is a very determined man. And THIS is the Liam I fell in love with! THIS is the Liam that made me swoon. Because he knows what he wants. Shelby makes him want to be the man she deserves.
As his friend and employee, Shelby was just Shelby. But Liam’s public life was full of paparazzi, tabloids, fans, body guards, and so much more. A life Shelby was not accustomed to. Would she really fit into his life? Can she be the woman he would want to spend the rest of his life with? Or is it just a whim he would tire of eventually? Can she take a chance and risk everything on giving Liam what he wants? Because he has already become her home and she can’t imagine life without him.
I loved Liam and Shelby together so much. And the rest of the characters, her brother and Liam’s manager, Everett, and Liam’s cousin, Douglas, were amazing as well. I admit I wasn’t sure what I thought of Liam at first. But then I fell for him hard. There was a confidant, take charge man inside of him. It just took the right woman to bring it out of him. This book is their journey. And of course, Melanie Moreland ends it with the most amazing epilogue. I have loved every book I’ve read of Melanie’s and this one now happily joins that list. I hope you’ll love it as much as I did.
I received a complimentary ARC – early release copy of this book in Kindle format from the author for review purposes.
This story was absolutely AWESOME and I mean AWESOME. I absolutely loved it so much. It stars british superstar Liam, who hires his agents sister to be his assistant and cook while she is in the process of a divorce from a nasty ex.
The story then restarts 6 months later, as the two Shelby and Liam have formed a work relationship but also a best friendship. Liam LOVES coming home from his trips to Shelby and while we understand he is in love with her, He has no clue at all. Until…..
When I first opened this ARC up, it has only a few chapters with Shelby’s name and so I thought it was mostly in Liam’s head except for a few chapters. Which is not how I love stories. But I was wrong, we get two view points of this story and I was so happy I got to hear Shelby’s thoughts too.
Another aspect of this story is that Shelby is in the middle of a divorce and she is also 5 years older than Liam. Its not really a cougarish story but those two aspects do play into the story as the press uses those things to sell some newspapers in this story.
At the start of story, Liam is an adult child but as he meets and falls for Shelby he has something and someone to fight for and we watch him really grow up and become the powerhouse that he is intended to be. I LOVED his cousin and cannot wait for the next story in this series.
Both Liam and Shelby are in love but they are both the last ones to really figure it out. This is very much a Hollywood romance between two best friends and it was absolutely wonderful. A wonderfully original story I absolutely loved. I also love that we get a glimpse of this couple in the future and how their lives work out.
