Change of Heart is a delightful and very refreshing story. The author Molly Jebbers takes readers back in time to 1899. To the town of Massillion Ohio. Drawn immediately into the story from chapter one I began to actually feel like I was an observer and the characters became my friends.
From chapter two I became aware of the town in my mind . I could almost hear the clip clip of the horses hoofs as they moved along. The chatter of the town’s residents as they went about their daily routines. The town came alive in my mind.
In the first few chapters we are introduced to the main characters of the book. First we meet a young Amish lady named Becca Yost. Recently jilted by her intended groom on her wedding day she has decided to come to Massillion to spend time with her widowed sister, Ruth Smith. Then there’s Matt Carrington , the town’s handsome doctor , who also happens to be unmarried. Oh and I must not forget Mrs. Carrington, Dr. Matt’s Mother. Eloise Carrington, a member of high society and very demanding, will take a back seat to no other character in this story.
I loved this book because it captured my interest from the beginning and held it to the last page. The author smoothly led the reader through many different happenings as the story unfolded. At the conclusion I was shedding tears . I won’t say anything more as I want all of you to experience the story for yourselves. I would highly recommend Change of Heart to all readers of both Amish fiction and Historical romance fiction. This book did not disappoint !
I read this book, and I forgot that I read it, and I forgot to do a review on it!! This book was definitely a good one, because the characters and situations seem so realistic. There are some mothers today who want their son to marry someone different than the girl he actually likes. There are still situations today where a mother no longer wants to do her duty of being a mom. The whole story was great, and there was just enough of romance and action mixed together!
This is one of my favorite Amish fiction/romance authors. Her books are well written and keep you reading to the last word. And normally you end them with a quiet sigh. They’re that good.
It’s no surprise to me that Change of Heart is another such book. I enjoyed reading it and didn’t want to put it down until it was done. Maybe part of that was because I know what this gal can write and I’ve enjoyed it.
That being said, this is an older novel of Molly Jebber’s and I think she definitely has changed some of her writing styles since then. You’re also going to learn quickly while this appears to be an Amish novel it really isn’t. Yes, the main character is Amish but she leaves the Amish community and lives with her sister who is no longer Amish. It’s more of a displaced Amish in the world type of book.
Even with those things, this is still a good read and I think you’ll enjoy it!

What I think you should know:
Change of Heart is the first book in the Keepsake Pocket Quilts series by Molly Jebber. It is Christian Historical Fiction/ Amish Fiction. This book is set in 1899. When Becca Yost is left at the altar she decides she needs a change of scenery in her life. Dr. Matt Carrington is a small town doctor in need of a nurse.
What I thought about this book:
If you have never had the pleasure of reading one of Molly Jebber’s books this is a great one to start with. Jebber does a wonderful job of showing Amish characters whose love of family transcends rules of the Amish Community. Becca is willing to visit her sister even though she has been shunned by the Amish community for leaving the Church and realizes you can still love and worship God outside of the Amish faith. I loved seeing her eyes open to some of the joys of English world. I enjoyed the secondary characters as much as I enjoyed the primary characters in the novel. Jebber also gave the story some suspense which showed Becca’s strength and Matt’s determination.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Set in 1899, this Amish story captures some of the best and the worst sides of Amish life. The worst part can be the shunning that results from members walking away from their Amish beliefs. The best part is the way the families love and support each other and the members of their community. In this story, Becca Yost was the dutiful Amish daughter and church member. But when her fiance jilts her publically, she decides to visit her sister who left the Amish way of life to pursue an “English” life.
As a midwife, Becca desires to learn more. So she is thrilled when Dr. Matthew Carrington asks her to help out as his nurse. The dynamics between these two is incredible. I loved getting to know them both. I also enjoyed getting to know Becca’s sister.
The one dark spot in this story is Matthew’s mother who is high-society. She does not approve of the two being together. But Matthew refuses to let that stop him from pursuing her. But by the end of the story, I will say my opinion of his mother changed.
So if you enjoy reading Amish fiction, check out this book for yourself.
I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
This Amish story takes us back to the late 1800s/early 1900s, and to me, the Amish faith was much stricter than today. When Becca Yost’s fiance dumped her, she left her home and Amish faith and moved in with her sister, in an Englisher town. This would change her life forever. Would it be for the good or bad?
As always, Molly Jebber gives her readers a stunning story to read about the Amish people. I always like her stories because they are Amish with a bit of twists and turns. I enjoyed the historical era, my grandfather was born in 1880, and I always enjoy books set in his earlier years. I really like Becca and felt so bad for the humiliation she went through. I enjoyed her sweet quiet spirit but was glad she broke out and got the job working for a Dr. Bringing on even more interesting details of this story. Though it took me a little while getting into this story, it ended up being a really nice sweet read. If you enjoy a nice clean Amish read, or maybe you haven’t tried the Amish genre, this would be a good book for you to read and enjoy. And its a pretty fast read. One you can read in a few hours.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
This is not your typical Amish book, so if you’re looking for one of the author’s sweet Amish stories you may want to bypass this historical novel. The setting and characters seem authentic, but I was surprised at the disrespect for parents and going against the Bible’s command to honor parents in this story. It obviously makes for intense conflict, but I’m shocked a woman who was raised Amish would go so against what she’d been taught rather than trusting God to work things out. Nevertheless, there are some heartwarming moments in the novel and some of the characters definitely experience quite a change. I like the pocket quilts featured in this series. Can Nurse Becca Yost and Dr. Matt Carrington work out their relationship or does God want them together? They struggle with this and other issues, including life-threatening danger, as the tale progresses. I received a copy through Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Author Molly Jebber writes such heartwarming stories, and Change of Heart is no exception. With well developed characters whose personalities shine, this book was a joy to read.
Jebber’s book, set in the late 1800s, tackles some challenging situations that cause pain, but she does it in such a way that the reader won’t be put off, but will be pulled in to see how things are resolved. Faith, as always to these stories, is an important thread throughout the book. This story has a surprise ending, but I won’t give it away; you’ll need to read it for yourself. I recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
The wonder of a changed heart
I’ve learned first hand – God provides us with the courage and words to say when we need them. – Becca
A lovely story of a young lady who continues to follow the leading of the Lord through everything. Becca starts a new life in Massillon, only to find there are people in the world that are just plain nasty. Continuing as the same loving person, her actions begin to change attitudes around her. But will hearts be changed as well?
The author has once again written a book that is hard to put down. Don’t miss this chance for a most enjoyable opportunity to see what can change if you are willing to continue holding on to your principles.
This is a different kind of Amish book than I am use to. It is set in the late 1890s and has a flair of the old west to it. I fell in love with the story and couldn’t put it down. Becca Yost has decided to come stay with her sister Ruth and try to overcome the embarrassment of being jilted by her fiancé . Becca is a very kind and gentle Amish woman who is trained as a midwife.
After arriving in town, she becomes injured and meets the very handsome Dr. Matt Carrington. He takes care of her injury and there seems to be a bit of a spark between them. Becca finds herself working at Matt’s clinic as his nurse and they begin a courtship. Not everyone is happy with this infatuation. Can a plain Amish woman fit in a world of prestige and wealth? I enjoyed the conflict between Becca and Matt’s mother very much. It shows how a person can judge another without knowing them. Do we sometimes do the same thing?
The story is filled with judgment, hurt, betrayal and God’s never ending love. The author has written a story that will have you feeling empathy and compassion for some. Does Matt’s mother show mercy towards Becca? Will Matt’s parents ever accept Becca? Can a person really change their heart? I highly recommend this book to readers who love a well written story that shows how judging someone can cause hurt and conflict. As I finished the book, I sat for a moment to remind myself , “Judge not, lest you be judged.” I also loved the quilt pocket that different characters made that had a note or letter in it. What a treasure it would be to receive such a heartwarming and personal gift from someone. The author has done an exceptional job of writing a story that shows that love does conquer all and with faith restoration is possible.
