Chance Encounter is the first book in A Chance and A Hope trilogy. These books are NOT meant to be read as standalones. If you like your entire story wrapped up in one book, you won’t enjoy this one. This one is for you if you don’t mind journeying with a character who has some healing to do before he’s ready for his forever.Chance knew love once—a long time ago. She died when they were eighteen … were eighteen and the best of him died with her. Since then his work on a ranch in Montana has allowed him to keep his distance from people and from happiness. Eighteen years later, he may be ready to start living again—maybe. He’s watched all his friends find love and embark on the next stage of their lives. Part of him would like to do the same; part of him would rather cling to the past.
He’s hoping that a trip to the Oregon Coast, and a couple of weeks away from his normal life, might help him figure out how he can move forward and maybe even be happy.
It’s taken him eighteen years to get to this point, but a chance encounter on the beach will make him want to figure it all out in just two weeks.
He’s come a long way, but can he really open his heart up to happiness—and to Hope?

These are not standalone reads. In fact, when you get to the end of this story, you may be faced with a cliffhanger – or you may not. The choice is yours!
What do I mean? Well, when you reach the end of Chapter Twenty you’ll be left with a warm and fuzzy Happy-For-Now. Love the second chances at love. But then leave you hanging with a turn of events….
I knew before I started this book that it was part of a series featuring Chance Malone from one of SJ McCoy’s “Summer Lake” series. As such, it was bound to have a cliffhanger. I HATE cliffhangers but as SJ McCoy was becoming one of my fave romance writers and I knew I would not have to wait long for the next book, I took a chance on reading it. I am very glad I did. SJ McCoy writes about having fun while falling in love. Her characters suffer through all the angst that real life lovers have the doubts and misgivings, but always seem to find their way out the other side. All the while surrounded by family and friends who with laughter and some good natured teasing support ,help each other sort out their happily ever after. So while “Chance Encounter” left me shouting at the main character like he could really hear me, I have no doubt Chance Malone will find his happily ever after someday. If you don’t mind waiting for a someday, happily ever after pick up “Chance Encounter” for alight feel good love story. Oh, it has just the right amount of steamy love scenes also…enough to make you wish that Chance was real without overpowering the story.
Great book
I’m so glad that we’re getting to know more about Chance. This book was an emotional read at times, but I couldn’t stop flipping the pages. Grab your copy and see how Chance and Hope meet.
Beautiful
I have read other books from SJ and she draws you into the characters and makes you feel everything they are. And this is another one of those books. You want to see where everything goes after they go back to their regular lives.
This is a first of a series, it is a standalone read with a HEA OR NOT. The author warns upfront that it is a cliffhanger ending if you choose that option. Or you can stop at the HEA scene and let it end. She warns no less than 3 times that it is a cliffhanger and the books need to be read in order.
I LOATE cliffhanger books and never read them HOWEVER, the cowboy on the cover pulled me right in. After reading a few pages, I figured I could stop if I didn’t care for the characters, I downloaded the other 2 books so I had the complete story. I’m GLAD I did. I love this story so far.
Chance is a broken man, 18 years ago he lost the love of his life to a drowning accident. He has never recovered or let her go. Something in his soul tells him it is time to let go and to move on before life passes him by. He just doesn’t know how to let go and move on. Losing her has been his whole life up until this point.
He is in Oregon for 2 weeks, away from his job and his ranch. He is trying to let go and move on. It isn’t working. And then he meets Hope and everything starts to clear up for him. He is still not in a good place but he feels he is on the right track. This is their story. It is entertaining and interesting. I loved the story and I am anxious to see where it goes from here. It is a very good read and I definitely recommend it. Just be warned, you may want to download the other two books before you get too far in so that you can have the whole story at your fingertips. It is worth it.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 8/23/18
Readers of SJ’s Remington Ranch and Summer Lake series are going to go crazy as Chance finally gets his story. We have watched Chance watch other couples from afar in all of these books. We know he has some inner issues that keep him from being a “full” person. I won’t get into these issues in case you haven’t’ read the other series. This book could be read as a stand alone if you so choose. Ok, here is where a lot of SJ’s readers may flog me, but I actually liked Hope a lot more than Chance in this one. He made me so mad, but at the same time I understand his choices. He was trying to do the right thing for Hope. Hope and Chance get to know each other as friends. And yes, SJ did it to us….there is a cliffhanger. But, here’s the beauty of SJ…she gave you a choice….you could stop reading at a “happy for now” ending…or you can gather courage and read on for the cliffhanger. You get to choose. Readers of SJ know that this is a trilogy. That being said you know Chance and Hope aren’t going to go quietly or easily. One more awesome thing about SJ……we only have to wait a month for book 2.
Easy to read and a real page turner!!
