When you hit rock bottom, the only way left is up.The Sanguinata are taking liberties and using humans like personal blood bags, but the tip is in the fine print, and the humans signing on the dotted line may as well be serving themselves up like cartons of juice. But when a woman under Sanguinata protection implores Serenity Harker for help, even the delicate balance of Midnight won’t stop … Midnight won’t stop Harker from making a bargain that will put her life on the line. Before she knows it, Harker has volunteered to compete in the House Games—a test of survival where lupin go up against sanguinata. The terms are simple: if she wins the humans go free.
On top of preparing for the games, Harker must work her first active case. But the excitement of leading the investigation is soon tarnished by a heart breaking loss. Bereft and broken and left to pick up the pieces, Harker must resist the temptation to fall apart if she is to liberate the humans from Sanguinata clutches.
As the house games approach, will Harker live up to her pledge as champion of humanity and give them back their free will, or will this fight prove to be her last?

I really enjoyed reading this book. Serenity Harker is still working to adapt to her new take on life in the town of Midnight, and you get a first hand glimpse into what links the team so closely together. Considering the fact Serenity has such a bad temper…I feel I can totally relate (been there, done that…still dealing with it). I would recommend this book for fans of dark dystopian style urban fantasy series with strong female MCs.
Serenity Harker’s adventure continues in Champion of Midnight, the second book in the Chronicles of Midnight series. This story picks up where the first left off and I like the fact that Ms. Cassidy gives us a brief overview of the last few pages in book one to refresh our memories of the ending. Champion of Midnight is engaging, refreshing and addictive. Serenity and her friends have such a strong presence that it is easy to bond with them and the storyline is action-packed and fascinating. There are several different factions battling for power, at the expense of the humans, and Serenity has stepped up to be their defender, their champion. No one else is willing to ruffle feathers and take on the harrowing task so she steps up to the plate. She refuses to back down, no matter what danger may lie ahead, but luckily she has the Protectorate, her new friends, to have her back. We also get a more in depth look at some of the different groups and a better understanding of the backstory regarding the mysterious daggers Serenity wields. More pieces of the puzzle start falling into place. We also see her connection between Bane and the others start to develop in new and different ways. The characters in this story are intriguing and I am anxious to see where the relationships between Serenity and the others, especially Bane, will go from here. There is definitely a lot of tension and deeper emotions in this second book.
After growing up in Sunset, it is hard for Serenity not to be affected by everything happening in Midnight. Even though she still has a lot to learn, she is trying to take it in stride as she continues to struggle to find her place in the new world and understand the reason behind her daggers and the darkness within her. In this second installment of the series, Serenity experiences heartbreak and loss and the sorrow shakes her to her core. With the help of her friends, she deals with the sadness and pushes through the pain and learns to harness her anger to help make things better for those who cannot help themselves. She trains, with the help of Bane and the others, for the upcoming games so she has a better chance of survival. Also a new threat emerges from the shadows, unexpected and deadlier than the rest, and new tenuous alliances are formed. This is definitely an exciting, action-packed read you will enjoy from the first page to the last. *I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and am leaving my honest review.
