Caroline Harper still thinks of him every day. For more than fifty years, not a day goes by when Caroline doesn’t think of her brother Andy. The last time she saw Andy was when he left home to spend thirty days at Florida’s largest reform school. Caroline’s family was told that Andy ran away in the middle of the night.
Fifty years later, Sean O’Brien receives a letter from a dead man. A year … man. A year earlier the man had hired Sean O’Brien and chartered his boat for a fishing trip. Now the man is reaching from the grave to hire him again. But this time it’s to find a killer.
Jackson County—the location of the old reform school, still carries smoldering baggage from the Civil War, and after a half-century, there are those who don’t want a forensics investigation on the property, because to do so will reveal one of the nation’s darkest secrets.

Wow! Didn’t want to put it down. Who is who, where were they, could they be believed. Loved this one.
Enjoyable reading with lots of plot twists – kept me guessing. There are not so many characters that I had to keep going to my list; however, the transitions were not always clear. By the end of the book the lead characters philosophized too much and the last chapter was totally superfluous to the story.
This is the second Sean O’Brien novel that I have read, and it reminded me of how much I enjoyed the first. The only negative thing that I have to say is that I haven’t gone back to the beginning to get to know Sean and crew from the jump. I will soon be correcting that error in judgement. Thanks for a great read, even if the subject matter is disturbing.
Just saw info about a book describing the abuses at a north Florida institution for boys that must have been the inspiration for this book. Great story, too real.
these events could actually happen. great read.
Listened to this book while traveling with my 11 year old grandson. We both enjoyed the story. It even kept him off the iPad while we were driving.
Would listen to more books by this author.
It really held my interest and recommend to anyone.
The second book I have read on this subject: and the best
I could not put this book down. I kept wondering if this was a true story. Tom Lowe always leaves me wanting more of his character Sean O’Brien.
I recommend Tom Lowe books because they are interesting and well written. This is also true in this book.
Good read. Kept me turning pages.
This book is a great read; fast paced story line that keeps you turning pages late into the night.
Highly recommend. Great read. Finished in one day!
I did not want to put this one down. It reminded me of a John Grisham novel. To think that it is based on a real place & real people made it twice as good.
This was a good book. Recently I read they were investigating deaths at a school similar to the one in this book. The sad fact is that there are reform schools all over this country that were run by evil people. It was a good book about delayed justice for the ones who couldn’t speak for themselves.
To bad things like this happpen and the the politicians try to cover it up. Liked the twists and turns.
a gripping story of grown ups taking advantage of children . using them and then disposing of them like garbage. Reading todays news you see the same things going on. many times people with the power to stop it do not for various reasons. Excellent characters.
Well written, good storyline
Great read!
The writer did an excellent job of creating a book of fiction out of historical facts.
What a great sad story
