“A dynamic story line that grips from the first chapter and doesn’t let go.”
–Midwest Book Review, Diane Donovan (regarding Once Gone)
From #1 bestselling mystery author Blake Pierce comes a new masterpiece of psychological suspense.
Homicide Detective Avery Black has been through hell. Once a top criminal defense attorney, she fell from grace when she managed to get a brilliant Harvard … brilliant Harvard professor off—only to watch him kill again. She lost her husband and her daughter, and her life fell apart around her.
Trying to redeem herself, Avery has turned to the other side of the law. Working her way up the ranks, she has reached Homicide Detective, to the scorn of her fellow officers, who still remember what she did, and who will always hate her.
Yet even they cannot deny Avery’s brilliant mind, and when a disturbing serial killer strikes fear into the heart of Boston, killing girls from elite colleges, it is Avery that they turn to. It is Avery’s chance to prove herself, to finally find the redemption she craves. And yet, as she is soon to find out, Avery has come up against a killer as brilliant and daring as she.
In this game of psychological cat and mouse, women are dying with mysterious clues, and the stakes could not be higher. A frantic race against time leads Avery through a series of shocking and unexpected twists—culminating in climax that even Avery could not imagine.
A dark psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense, CAUSE TO KILL marks the debut of a riveting new series—and a beloved new character—that will leave you turning pages late into the night.
Book #2 in the Avery Black series will be available soon.
“A masterpiece of thriller and mystery. Pierce did a magnificent job developing characters with a psychological side, so well described that we feel inside their minds, follow their fears and cheer for their success. The plot is very intelligent and will keep you entertained throughout the book. Full of twists, this book will keep you awake until the turn of the last page.”

The book is an easy and quick read, looking to read the rest of Blake’s books
Anything Blake Pierce writes is great! His books are page turners from page one on. I recommend his books to all that enjoy mystery/thrillers.
Terrible armature writing. None of the characters are likable nor realistic. Characatures of cops at best
Love this series!
Not very realistic. Author tried too hard to create a likeable character that wasn-t. Main character was once a top criminal attorney to fell from grace and ended up a cop. You can tell the author was guessing what being a police officer is all about.
I love a good mystery. I love looking at all the angles to figure it out. There were some unbelievable theories and events but what shut me down on this book was the language. IT WAS AWFUL! Don’t tell me that all police talk this way because I know that isn’t true. A little language I can overlook but this was in all the conversations! It was just sick! When I look at a new author I check the ratings and reviews. I should have read an excerpt. Lesson learned. It is so sad Mr. Pierce you feel you have to have this much language to sale a book. Shame on you. I’m just glad it was a free ebook. I would give it a 0 rating if I could.
Started watching during hurricane Irma. I couldn’t put it down. Excellent
This is a well written mystery; and I enjoyed it. However being from the Boston area, I was somewhat taken back by the author when he referred to the city/towns in the Boston area as counties. Boston is in Suffolk County, as is Brighton. Cambridge is the county seat of Middlesex County; Belmont is a town in Middlesex County, and Watertown and Waltham are cities. Future visitors to this area would be quite confused trying to find these counties which are municipalities.
Suffice it to say, this was the only flaw in the story.
Some may think “Get over it”. But, when I read a novel, I expect the story to be fictional; but I’d like the geography to be factual. Just sayin’…
A little graphic for my tastes.
Good read
I am a huge Blake Pierce fan! His books are great if you enjoy reading a mystery series.
Could not stop reading till I finished book
Never knew what was going to happen next. Just one more chapter never happened cause had to keep going.
Well written and executed,
Written well, however from my point of view this authors characters seem to lack self esteem an/or self confidence.
Entertaining, but a bit thin. A good story is better when it is not so quickly over.
Excellent murder mystery
Great author. Love all of her books.
Reading the third in the series and there are more to come!! Can’t wait!
Very good. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. A real page turner. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more…
