Still stranded in 1815, FBI agent Kendra Donovan finds herself on the trail of a vicious murderer with a shocking secret.October 1815: There is only one place Kendra Donovan wants to travel—back to her own time period in the twenty-first century. But since that’s not happening, she agrees instead to travel with her new guardian, the Duke of Aldridge, to one of his smaller estates in Lancashire. … estates in Lancashire. Their journey takes them through Yorkshire, a region whose breathtaking beauty masks a simmering violence brought on by the Industrial Revolution, which pits mill owner against worker.
When Kendra and the Duke encounter a band of Luddites on a lonely, fog-shrouded road, the Duke informs the authorities in the nearby village of East Dingleford that mischief may have been done at the local mill. However, it isn’t just mischief but murder that is discovered, when the body of the mill manager, Mr. Stone, is found brutally bludgeoned to death in his office.
The Constable is certain the radical-minded Luddites committed the murder. One look at the crime scene and Kendra knows they did not, prompting the Duke to shock the locals by volunteering their services to catch the real killer. Joined by lover Alec and Bow Street Runner Sam Kelly, Kendra must sort through the puzzle of Stone’s rather unsavory life, picking apart alibies and dissecting carefully created deceptions from a growing list of suspects.
As a special agent for the FBI, Kendra thought she’d encountered every kind of evil. But when another, even more vicious murder rocks East Dingleford, Kendra realizes that they’re dealing with a stone-cold killer—one who has a shocking secret that he will do anything to protect.more
Caught in Time: A Novel (Kendra Donovan Mysteries) by Julie McElwain is Historical Thriller Mystery and Time Travel/Split Time. This exciting series is very fast with many unexpected twists with aspects of both the 19th and 21st centuries. Kendra is so talented in unexpected ways. I can’t stop from binge reading these books, then I have to wait so long for the next book. I hope there are many more Kendra Donovan Mysteries to come with new mysteries for Kendra, Alec and the Duke to solve.
A great third book, I hope there will be more!
3rd book and the series just keep getting better! I love this series. I was hooked from the first book. This book just delivers another great story. Watching Kendra’s character adapt in each book is incredibly interesting. The evolving love story between Kendra and Alec is equally interesting. This book delivered another great murder mystery for Kendra and the Duke! The ending blew my mind!!! I can’t wait for the 4th book! July can’t come soon enough.
Book Three in Julie’s time travel series.. a really fun premise – send an FBI profiler back to 1815 London against her wishes and then have her fall in love (also unwillingly). Enjoyed the twisty plot lines of each book, but also – what a dilemma – if Kendra could find a way back to her own century would she go, and leave the lurv life behind? Can’t wait for Book Four (Betrayal in Time) due out next year. Julie talks entertainingly about the fun and games in the latest Joys of Binge Reading podcast: https://thejoysofbingereading.com/julie-mcelwain-time-travel-mysteries/
Love Julie as the writer, she’s brilliant with her characters and this series. She draws you in with each and everyone of them. Kendra, being from the future is rather funny trying to fit into the 19th century. She melts your heart because your pulling for her. You want her to realize what she never had in her world she has in this world. You want her to be business partners with Sam and bring in Doc. Monroe. Best friend with Becca. Daughter to a man who lost his, the Duke. A love that has become everything to both of them, Alex. Everyone needs to read this series. It’s a great series. KEEP WRITING THEM JULIE!!!!!!
4.5/5
With this third entry, this time travel/mystery series just gets better and better. And while I had figured out parts of it (the BIG twist at the end) by catching a couple of very subtle clues, there were still some surprises in store too. Kendra is a strong, independent 21st-century woman frustrated by but navigating her way through a 19th-century England. It’s a true pleasure to read how she does it, aided by her new cast of friends. And the extended cast of characters are becoming as interesting, lovable and familiar as Kendra herself. Very nicely done!
Keep ‘em coming!
I still really enjoy this series – although this was my least favorite of the three books to date. The Luddite issue and the underlying murder were just not as engaging for me as the earlier mysteries/murders that Kendra found herself facing. The beginning was a slower moving than I expected, although things did pick up and I did find myself wholly engaged by the latter middle part of the story. And the surprise twist at the end caught me TOTALLY off guard (in the best possible way) and I’m dying to see where things go next as a result…
