Love comes out of left field in the second novel in USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Bernard’s sexy baseball-themed series!Months of alternately flirting and bickering with Kilby Catfish catcher Mike Solo just turned into the hottest kiss of Donna MacIntyre’s life—and that’s a major league complication. Any hint of scandal could keep her from getting her son back from her well-connected ex. … well-connected ex. Then Mike comes up with a game-changing idea: a marriage proposal that could help win her case— even as it jeopardizes her heart…
Mike hasn’t been able to get the gorgeous, gutsy redhead out of his fantasies. The least he can do is fix the mess he helped create. Yet their engagement is quickly becoming about a lot more than doing the right thing. Because after swearing he’d never risk love again, Mike has found a passion that puts all his emotions in play, and a woman he’ll go to bat for again and again.

Well, this one was a wee bit of a surprise. I liked All of Me, the first book in this series, and I figured Caught by You would be very similar. It was, but it was also much more. There is more to this story than just the tale of Mike and Donna. There is also much more to them than you may expect. While this is a light read, there are some controversial issues in here that are addressed with humor and purpose. There was even one scene that had me crying. That almost never happens! In Caught by You, Jennifer Bernard makes her characters so normal and everyday that you will relate to them on every level. Can I also say that I’ve read this in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic where there is NO BASEBALL!!! That was one of the deciding factors in me picking up this book. I need my baseball. AND, yes, the Cardinals were mentioned. Be still my heart…. If you like athletic themed romance books this is a good one!
The second book in the “Love Between the Bases” series is about Donna, the Kilby resident party girl and Mike, the Kilby Catfish catcher. Their chemistry is fun and sexy. There are also some deep emotional struggles going on with them that leave you feeling their pain and heartache. Donna is trying to gain custody of her four-year-old Zack while Mike is managing his need to help do the right thing with Donna and keep true to his beliefs that he can’t love ever again after Angela.
The book deals with several different sensitive topics that had me tearing up. They play into the character and moral fiber in each of the them, as well as, the supporting people in their story. Jennifer Bernard illustrates how beauty can be only skin deep and how beauty within can shine brightly out.
Donna MacIntyre is well known for walking on the wild side and living life on her terms without any regard for what others think of her…that is until her lawyer tells her that it’s time for her to put a damper on her wild ways. Her well-to-do ex has decided to fight her for sole custody of their son, and her only hope of having a chance to keep her son is to start walking the straight and narrow, and prove that she can be the responsible mother/adult that her son needs. For the first time in her life she actually has to worry about what others think of her, and live her life according to their terms, which doesn’t set well with the gutsy redhead, but she has no other choice… or does she?
After sharing a heated kiss with a beautiful redhead in a library closet, Mike Solo knows he has met his match. She is gutsy, tempting as hell and has him considering the breaking his on season vow of celibacy. But after returning to town, the spicy redhead he left behind has turned herself into a dowdy over dressed secretary, and has Mike more confused than ever. When he approaches her full well expecting to pick up where they left off, she turns tale and flees in the other direction, for fear of damaging her new squeaky clean schoolmarm image.
When Mike learns she her new image and newly found responsible lifestyle is her only plan for getting her son back, Mike decides he has a better plan… marriage!
This was my first experience with Ms. Bernard’s work, and I have to say that it left a very good first impression, so much so, I plan to make a return visit to the series very soon! Mike and Donna’s touching and funny story captured my attention right from the start and held on tight through their little journey to find their happy ending. If you enjoy small town romance, with hunky baseball players, then this is DEFINITELY the series for you, it is sure to leave you with a happy heart and blushing smile too!!
