A refugee fleeing the oppression of a police state must go on the run with animals who can communicate with him
Exiled after his home planet was turned into a military outpost following an interstellar war, Troy Horan is relocated to the planet of Korwar. Under the watchful eye of the police state, he lives in the slums in a restricted area for sub-citizens. He works as a day laborer in an … day laborer in an interplanetary pet shop and has no idea why the Terran animals have been imported to Korwar–or why he has the ability to silently communicate with them, especially the kinkajou. But a murder forces him to flee with his animal friends into the Wild, where mysterious, sealed ruins conceal Korwar’s most fiercely guarded secret. With no one he can trust and an entire government under siege, Troy leads his extraordinary band of warriors in a final bid for freedom none of them may survive.
This action-packed, classic outsider story will be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

BookBub has Andre Norton’s Catseye on sale for $1.13! This was one of my absolute favorite books when I was a teenager and I reread it often for the next 10 years or so. After remembering it fondly for…well, a very long time!…I recently bought it and read it again. Although it doesn’t still carry quite the fascination it used to hold for me, I still enjoyed it and was glad to revisit the characters; enough that I have purchased several other Nortons. She was an excellent and influential author and is worthy of rediscovery.
So much of this book has been inspirational to other authors, you need to look at the original publication date to realize why it seems so familiar. And it re-reads fine, too.
Solid SciFy from a past master
This book is an absolute classic. Required reading for every sci-fi fan, especially if you’re not familiar with Norton’s work.
cannot go wrong with Andre Norton.
Good ‘classic’ scifi
Andre Norton is the queen of fantasy.
Enjoyed this book especially with characters that are sentient animals. Fun adventure and sci-fi with a twist.
I love all of Andre Norton’s books. This is one of early stand alones. One od my favorites.
Andre Norton books are generally entertaining, this one is somewhat simplistic and did little to fully explore the animal to human interaction.
An easy read by a favorite author.
It’s Andre Norton —need I say more?
I love Andre Norton, didn’t love this one though. I plodded along, read some, put it down, read some more, skipped a few pages, and in the end, wasn’t interested. Her “Star” series (star guard) etc. was ten times better.
I loved Andre Norton and have been enjoying rereading on Kindle. I finished this one but did not find it as gripping as many of her stories were. Maybe too much introspection on the part of the characters? There’s plenty of conflict and action but even that is presented in a way I didn’t find gripping. I skimmed, A LOT.
Classic sci-fi/paranormal/fantasy from the master who created the genre, at her best. This book has it all: expert world building, expert human and animal character development, adventure, a little dystopian, a little sci-fi, a bit of paranormal and fantasy, a touch of a young man coming of age. You really can’t go wrong. If you’ve never read it, then do yourself a favor and read it. You’ll be glad you did.
Wonderful reread, took me back to Mr younger years.
Andre Norton has been one of my favorite authors for 45 years. These action stories are impeccable. They start like a log chart from Star Trek, with the place sketched in succinctly, and the characters introduced. Soon we know the driving emotions of the main character and the conflict that faces him or her. Before long, a huge story is unveiled with backstory beyond belief… but all neatly drawn into the boundaries of a short novel. The formula is classic and so gracefully complete that we hardly seem to noticed — that it’s really good storytelling!
As usual, Ms. Norton does not disappoint.
well written, imaginative and original
I have always loved stories with outsider or misfit as protagonist who then finds a community where he fits or finds how special skills make him a hero.
