In 1984 a doomsday vault was constructed on a remote island in the Arctic Ocean.
Its purpose was to preserve Earth’s genetic history in the event of a global catastrophe.
Now, decades later, a second vault has been uncovered.
This one resting where no one ever expected.
And the problem is…it’s not ours.
Yet even more curious than the vault itself, is what lies inside.
Seeds. Millions of seeds. … inside.
Seeds. Millions of seeds. Each with a genetic embryo untouched and perfectly preserved.
Waiting.
No one knows who built it. Or when.
What we have managed to figure out is that whoever it was traveled an immense distance. For the sole purpose of hiding their genetic blueprints on Earth.
But why?
Now a small group of marine biologists and navy investigators have been assigned to find out. Before anyone else does.
But Alison Shaw and John Clay are not prepared for what they are about to uncover.
Beginning with the truth behind our own evolution.

Well written and edited. The storyline flows well with multiple sub-plots, keeping me engaged until long past my sleep time. There is enough tech involved for the technophiles but it does not overwhelm the story. The characters are absolutely believable and real. I’ll hope for more of the Breakthrough series. The primary element of the story, communication between humans and other species, is very thought provoking. This has been an excellent read.
A book you will not want to end!
The third book in this series brings the cast of wonderful characters together again, still fighting to prevent a terrifying new power from the entire world. The third book brings our cast of characters through more harrowing and life-threatening experiences to protect a secret only they know the full extent of and its potential terrifying consequences. The secret, if revealed, would likely bring the superpowers to war — a war that would tear the world apart!
As the third book concludes, it seems to create a to-be-continued story line! Having created a full cast of characters, characters I really didn’t want to part with, I am definitely first in line to keep reading about them and their new assignment! I thoroughly enjoyed this very intriguing series and I certainly hope there is more!
Well written with excellent story matter; really enjoyed
Despite a few small errors I found (because as a writer I’m very picky and nerdy when it comes to writing), I’m still giving this third installment of the Breakthrough series an enthusiastic thumbs up. I love the characters, I love the animals, I love the concept, and I love the pace. Needless to say, I will be reading #4 in short order!
Michael C. Grumley knows how to spin a great tale and keep the reader engaged. Along the way, he also educates the reader about real scientific discoveries while crafting a science fiction narrative that makes reality and fiction blend in a compelling case for “What if?”
Part of the Breakthrough series by Richard Grumley that i love. Should start with the first book.
A great series!!! On to Book 4 Ripple!!! TBR can’t wait! Great Adventure….
I also believe that dolphins are more intelligent that we think. This story is well written and interesting. With action, laughter, sadness and hope. But mostly hope. Hope for a better world. This one I will read again.
Great book!
Michael Grumley is pretty awesome. I have some small issues with his narrative style (i.e. I don’t think it’s necessary to say “what (s)he didn’t know was such and such…” at the end of a chapter and I think it detracts from the flow of the story), but all in all I’ve been enthralled with this series. Can’t wait for the next book!
I loved this addition to the Breakthrough series! Great characters, interesting plots and a nice touch of romance!
A lot of people just don’t “get” the Breakthrough series, putting on their logic hats and nit-picking through details that aren’t entirely accurate. If that’s a make-or-break kind of thing for them, I understand.
That said, I have different criteria. I need sci-fi books with at least one character I can respect and identify with, a messsage that makes me feel good about humanity, and some cool out-of-the-box ideas. Add aliens, space travel, and/or cool tech (plausible or not), and I am a seriously happy camper. Keep the storyline consistent, the grammar and spelling decent, and stay away from misogyny/racism/preachy stuff, and we have a winner.
That’s what I see in these books. They add up to exactly the kind of stories I love to read. They don’t keep me up at night scared for mankind; they make me feel hopeful.
Catalyst continues the Breakthrough series with more revelations about the big brained mammals on earth, and strives to show there is a chance we can all communicate, we can all Kumbaya together. As with the earlier novels, the science doesn’t all add up, but that’s not what makes these books so important or enjoyable. No one writes hopeful and heart-filled sci-fi books anymore. They’re all we-effed-up-the-planet apocalypse scenarios, terrifying no-one-has-rights-anymore dystopias, rebelling AIs, and misunderstood aliens trying to kill us.
Michael C. Grumley doesn’t give us more of the doom and gloom. He gives us a break from the awful and shows us the good. Give me his brand of old school sci-fi adventure any day. I sleep much better hoping we can one day find a way to speak, peer-to-peer, with all the animals of the earth. Think of what we could learn if we could shut up long enough to listen, really listen, to the world around us!
Solid Action Fiction
Michael Grumley writes well. This story is a fast-paced, driven, suspenseful fiction. The science is on the level of “Star Trek”. The characters are very likable. The book is well-edited. I look forward to Mr. Grumley’s development as a writer and to his stories, hopefully, for many years to come! I recommend this book.
Some sci-fi, some political thriller, its got action. I am enjoying this series
3rd book in the Breakthrough series. Same characters, well fleshed out, new characters added to enhance the story. I’m still liking this storyline, you must somewhat suspend your beliefs a bit but in a good way. I find it a great read, the same story basically as far as the characters, including 2 dolphins and a young gorilla . Very thought provoking, makes us think of what we may have been capable of early on in the history of Humans.
Again, no swearing!
This series is explosive and amazing!!!!
Great Story, Suffers Same Formatting Problem As LEAP. In this entry into the BREAKTHROUGH series, Grumley doesn’t have near the revelations of the previous two books – though there are a couple thrown in, they just don’t have the impact of the previous books – but manages to raise the stakes even more. Our team faces genuine peril this time, with one major character actually dying – and staying dead through the end of the book. Other characters feel like cannon fodder when introduced, and are never really fleshed out to be much more than that. Whereas the previous two books left on a bit of an ominous cliffhanger of the reader knowing more was to come but the characters not, this book leaves us with the characters having a clear direction – even if they don’t know exactly where they are going. Arguably the weakest book of this series, but still an excellent read that promises even more to come.
Enjoyed learning new things and the suspense. Can’t wait for next book in series.
