The New York Times–bestselling saga: In nineteenth-century Ireland, a titled English family keeps an estate in an era of famine and violent conflict. When Edward de Salis travels to America after the death of his first wife, he is astonished to find himself falling in love with Marguerite, a young woman many years his junior. Full of hope for the future, he returns to his Irish estate, … Irish estate, Cashelmara, but in nineteenth-century Ireland—a country racked by poverty and famine—his family eventually becomes trapped in a sinister spiral of violence that Edward could never have foreseen. Cashelmara follows the fortunes of three generations as they struggle to survive both the tragedies of history and their own chaotic lives. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Susan Howatch including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

I have read EVERYTHING that she has written and I have loved every one of her books. She is an amazing author!!!!
I was surprised by the change in narrators throughout the book, but I loved the different point of views it offered over time. There was amazing growth in the characters and so many fascinating coming of age stories are told. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend if you like historical family sagas.
Covers too much time, too many characters none of which interested me. Skip this one and save the time for something else.
long, drawn out book
It drags, and drags, and drags…..
kind of a gothic novel that I read years ago & still remember. Susan Howatch has a way with the gothic novel & unusual story lines.
Disappointing
The book was full of flawed characters and the story was unpredictable but it kept me interested up to the end. It was a good read.
I read this ages ago in paperback and was glad to see it in digital form.
I read this book for the first time many years ago and have gone back and enjoyed it again many times since. I loved the depiction of life in the various periods, and I loved seeing the story from different people’s perspective. Even the ones I was inclined not to like I ended up feeling sympathy for because I got to see things through their …
I was surprised to see this title. I read this book in 1975. It was great then & I’m sure it has withheld the test of time!
What a saga!. i can’t say I liked all the characters but the twists and turns were interesting. I don’t care for evil so blatantly expressed but it was an unpredictable story and time line.
I love how she uses historical people as the basis for her fictional characters and stories.
Great saga of generations of Irish/English family.
I enjoyed reading this book, changing from Country to Country and describing the land was very interesting
Not as good as Penmarric but worth reading.
This book was really, really good! Even though it was quite long….over 700 pages, I read it quickly because you just HAD to know what was going to happen next! Susan Howatch is a wonderful author and I LOVE her books!!! She definitely knows how to tell a story!!!
I loved it. Not too heavy, just enough. Entertaining. Kept me up late reading .
A bit lengthy but keeps your interest connected. A great story of a time and period very little is known about. The English not only exploited foreign lands but they even exploited there own neighbour’s. After a long time i am reading a novel and I find it does keep me captivated and interested in the story line. First book by this author and I do …
I love this book. I read it a long time ago.
