Fans of Star Wars and Divergent will revel in internationally bestselling author Veronica Roth’s stunning new science-fiction fantasy series.
On a planet where violence and vengeance rule, in a galaxy where some are favored by fate, everyone develops a currentgift, a unique power meant to shape the future. While most benefit from their currentgifts, Akos and Cyra do not—their gifts make them … gifts make them vulnerable to others’ control. Can they reclaim their gifts, their fates, and their lives, and reset the balance of power in this world?
Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power—something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.
Akos is from the peace-loving nation of Thuvhe, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Though protected by his unusual currentgift, once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive—no matter what the cost. When Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. They must decide to help each other to survive—or to destroy one another.

This is another world in which rivalries occur again between groups of people and youth are the ones who generate change and bring the plot to us. This is a story that takes place in a world that specially formulated for us readers and thus, we are partners in the creation.
There is nothing new in the plot, unlike other books in the genre, but on the other hand, the book is well written and enjoyable, except for some factual errors that did not work out for me.
I would love to read the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed Divergent, and even though I was somewhat disappointed with Allegiant, I had to give this series a try. I really enjoyed the first book. Exciting, hate-worthy villains, flawed-yet-awesome heroes, and a compelling plot. I listened to it on audio and the casting is spot on. I’m currently listening to the sequel, so will let you know what I think! 🙂
There is just too much going on. It’s like your spit into this world that you know nothing about with all these weird character names which I could be ok with if their weren’t so dang many of them. Yes, I get that they are just pronounced initials. But I keep reading the same sentences over and over trying to figure out what is going on with the 1,000 different people in the begining. Also, nothing is really happening with them. They are just talking to each other and the narrator is describing their traits and you’ve got to keep reminding yourself who is who and who acts what way. Maybe it would have helped if I got a list and wrote it all down. I just do not have this much time to read, nay study a book that takes this much effort.
If someone could tell me it was worth it I am definitely self-disciplined just enough to make myself but everyone I trust has convinced me it would be in vain. Tell me if I’m wrong. Say it to my face.
This was very interesting. It was a mix between Hunger Games/Divergent. Love the intermix of how everything came about. Once you get to the last 15 Chapters you will be stuck til the end.
It took me a few chapters to really get into this book. I actually started reading it, set it aside, and picked it back up a few months later. Once I really got into it, I enjoyed the book.
Interesting new series. Looking forward to book 2
