Carter
She was the one for me.
The one that I knew would be mine forever until I made the biggest mistake. I pushed her away and I’ve regretted that decision ever since. I’ve tried to move on, tried to put the memory of her behind me, but she’s always consuming my thoughts. Now, she’s back in our hometown, trying to rebuild a new life. I know she’s keeping secrets. She tries to hide them from me, … them from me, and I will do whatever it takes to prove that I’m the one she needs. Because Shelby Ross is the other part of me that I can’t live without and I refuse to let her go again.
Shelby
He broke my heart.
I never thought I would be able to pick up the pieces he left behind. When he let me go, I ran away from it all, thinking it was the easiest thing to do. But, running has a price and I’ve paid it in full for years. Now, I’m back where it all began, back to putting my life together and starting over. It should’ve been easy, but Carter Harlow is reawakening long buried emotions that I thought were gone. He wants to make me his again. I can’t let that happen. He ruined me, broke me, and I’m afraid I’ll never survive it a second time around.

Loved this book, look forward to the rest of the series
Book 1 of the series and I have to say I’ve loved it. The Harlow brothers are characters, from brooding and deep, to playful and sarcastic.
This is Carter and Shelby’s story. Second chance romance based in a small town. I loved the characters, the setting, and the story. I laughed several times at the twins and can’t wait to read their stories.
A definite one click.
Oh my…Oh my…Oh my…
Why haven’t I read Carter sooner?
I have never been disappointed with a book by Brie Paisley. Carter just cements my point in place. I LOVED this book from the beginning to the very end. If I didn’t pass out at 1am the book would have been devoured in one day. Just loved Carter and Shelby’s story.
At the beginning of the book you learn how Shelby and Carter met and then are brought to the present time where both have gone in separate directions. Hearts were broken in the past and time moved forward but can love survive through it all between two who were meant to be together.
Deep down I believe in fate and that it steps in at a time when people truly need it. In Carter, I think fate played a huge part in Shelby and Carter’s story. This book is emotion packed and had my heart breaking at times for both Shelby and Carter but rejoicing at others.
The Harlow Brothers also help make this book a 5 star read. The Harlows are a close knit Family and you feel the love they have for each other. Carter, Caden, Cason, Clark and Caleb (wow a lot of “C” names to keep track of) are also very close and have each other’s backs. The comradery between them is strong and they have a great bond with each other. I can’t wait to get the rest of the Harlow boys stories. And I will just put this out there now…I am claim Caleb – I love a quiet, shy boy
I really enjoyed this second chance romance! I am new to Brie Paisley, but I am so intrigued by this series!! Carter and Shelby’s story was a good one, but I feel like this troupe has been done so many times before. Brie put a couple of twists in this story, and the writing just flowed.
This was a brilliant, heart warming second chance book. If you like second chances, this is the book for you. I loved the camaraderie of all the characters, and getting to know them all.
.
I loved Shelby and Carter together, they had one true love. You could see they needed each other, and loved each other.
I highly recommend this book. And I can’t wait to see what happens next for the brothers.
Carter and Shelby have a lifetime of history. Some good, some bad and some live changing and devastating.
Best friends from young ages to a couple in their teens, to strangers in their early twenties when Carter makes a wrong choice. During Shelby’s 13 years away from her home town her life has changed, a lot. Everyone thinks it’s been perfect but the truth is it’s been far from it. Returning isn’t easy and she isn’t ready but it’s the only place she can turn. Carter thought he’d never see her again and definitely isn’t expecting the secrets she reveals. Together they work through all the darkness of their pasts.
Carter is an entertaining read of secrets, lies, betrayal, deceit, truths, love, romance, friendships and families.
After escaping a horrible relationship, Shelby runs back home to Mississippi, a place she ran from thirteen years ago. Going back home after being gone so long, after having left after everything had happened, she is unsure of her welcome. In fact, after getting there she pretty much turns into a hermit to avoid seeing the ghost of her past.
For thirteen years Carter regretted how he pushed Shelby away. She is always there in his mind and he has yet to move on knowing that she was that one person that was meant for him. When he finds out that she is back, at first knowing she didn’t want to see him hurts, even though he can understand. Fate has given him a second chance at happiness with Shelby, and Carter is determined to stop at nothing until she is his.
This is by no means my first read from this author, in fact she wrote one of my top ten favs. But there is something about Carter and Shelby that left me hanging. I am not sure where the disconnect is with this couple. There was a lot of flashbacks, drama, an ok naughty time or two (a bit tame for the author IMO), and a bit of violence. I gave this 3.5 stars.
I was teary before chapter one in the flashback to their past. It was a story that really pulled me in, connecting with the characters and I was just wanting it not to end.
This is the story of Shelby and Carter, their lives from age 5 to the current day in their early 30s. Often when stories do multiple flash backs I get lost but this was so smoothly done. What emotional baggage was in this story both past and present and what evil characters lurked in the background. Their journey of love and healing was beautiful and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the other 4 brothers.
Shelby Ross first met Carter Harlow when she was 5 years old and he was 6. He always carried a piece of her heart but she had to move on after he broke her heart. Yet she married Easton Carrington who managed to break her heart as well and now she finds herself back home in Columbus, Mississippi.
Carter Harlow is a lawyer in his family firm and his heart has never found another after breaking Shelby’s heart. When he discovers Shelby is back in town he knows he can’t let her go this time.
But life has it’s ups and downs and Shelby needs to figure out of she trusts Carter with the events of her past and whether or not he will run when he learns the truth. When Shelby learns about secrets from her own past will she have the courage to finally stand up for herself?
This was such a great book with some twists and turns that made you not want to put the book down.
I really liked Shelby and knew she had been through so much from her marriage and that she had never gotten over Carter. I liked that Shelby was able to have great friendships with Carter’s brothers, Caden and Casen, before seeing Carter again.
I liked Carter and how his heart still belonged to the girl from his past. He knew that he was not over her and I loved when he was sent to the Barrett’s.
One thing I really liked was that Shelby and Carter really had to start over with a friendship before anything else happened as they needed to repair everything and gain the trust back.
My heart broke when I learned about what Shelby had gone through in the past with her marriage and I was sad that Carter blamed himself for it all but I understood why he did. Carter was so remorseful over the past and I was glad that he took responsibility for his actions and he never got over what he did.
I was totally shocked about the twist with Easton and I was not expecting that at all!!
I thought the letter was awesome and I loved the apology that was given. It was so sad to read though and I hated what happened because of everything. I was shocked again when Shelby’s mom showed up and how she manipulated everything.
The very end was awesome and I can’t wait for more in this series! – By Rebecca
Shelby Ross seems so sad and seems to have the weight of the world on her shoulders. Carter Harlow has regrets. The author is great at building anticipation that makes it very easy to turn the page. I have a couple of shoes I’m waiting to drop and a surprise waiting to happen.
That’s the point where I realized that this book was going to be a marathon read because there was no way I was going to stop until I came to whatever conclusion that the author has written. If you haven’t read Caden yet that’s a good thing. Carter’s story introduces you to all the Harlow boys so this is the best place to start.
This may be a second chance romance but it’s not without a lot of ups and downs. That includes how differently men and women see things – how we think differently. We also see how clueless they can be when it comes to us. But it was also fun to watch Carter squirm. I loved watching all the boys interact with each other. Even though they are secondary characters they are very important as to how well this story moves along. I also loved their banter back and forth – one great way to show the love between siblings. And I found it was worth getting this book read in one day because I got the best ending for this couple.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
