Stopping at the grocery store for some carrots shouldn’t be dangerous, but in Shelby’s case, it changes her life forever. During a bank robbery, she is caught in the cross-fire and grazed by a bullet to the head, leaving her with the crazy ability to read minds. Not only is she hearing what everyone thinks about her, but the gunman who shot her is out to silence her forever. In her fight to stay alive she is saved from certain death by a handsome hitman with ties to organized crime. This pulls Shelby even deeper into danger, where knowing someone’s thoughts can not only hurt her feelings, but get her killed.

Carrots: A Shelby Nichols Adventure is in the same shelf as Stephanie Plum and Betsy Taylor in terms of comedy and hilarity. I love chic-lit plied with mystery and Colleen Helme did not disappoint! Loved it! ~Braine – Talk Supe: A Pop Fiction Book Blog
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy a nice, light mystery with hilarious drama. I can’t wait to read more from this author. ~Sizzle & Swoon Book Reviews

The first in the Shelby Nichols series and I am hooked. Trouble seems to follow Shelby everywhere.
I just saw that this book is “free” and being promoted on Bookbub, and the Bookbub ad reminded me that I read “Carrots” last year (when I paid for it!) and liked it a good deal. Great escapism literature with a charming, clever heroine. And a good “bad” guy, which is a twist I always enjoy in a book. A well-done cozy mystery with a touch of …
I have listened to the audiobook of this series over and over again. It is just so much fun, and just the sort of read for a relaxing summer holiday.
I recently read a short story By Colleenn Helme in Drop Dead Crime (along with four other great female crime writes) and was introduced to the character Shelby Nichols. I enjoyed that story so much I brought the first story in the series to see what I had been missing.
Wow so glad I did I really enjoyed the story so much that once I have written …
This was delightfully unexpected full of twists and turns. Couldn’t put it down. Now I’m hooked on the whole series. Love it!!!
A great series. Shelby is shot in the head when she is buying carrots at the grocery store. After the accident she finds she can read minds. Her mind reading gets her involved with a big crime boss plus helping the police with her premonitions. The books in the series get a bit more serious as they go along but are all enjoyable
I really enjoyed this book. Believable characters with good portrayal of personalities. There are only 2 things I would recommend to the author. 1 – tampons or another hygienic product would have been funnier than carrots. 2 – I would have loved a scene where Shelby had to attend a PTA meeting or school sports event.
Loved it!!! This is the Shelby Nichols series. Carrots is the first book of the series that grabs you from the first page and will not let you go until the last page. You will never be disappointed with any of the Shelby Nichols stories. Colleen is amazing how she keeps you entertained.
This is the start of a great series. I’ve read all of them and would read them again right now if I didn’t have such a long “to read” list. They are funny, a bit over the top with the way Shelby is usually getting into trouble. At times I have to put the books down because my heart is pounding so fast and I’m so tense. It’s been a long time …
The characters are not true enough to life to make the book very engaging, and the author dumbs down the main character to the point of making her a dim-witted victim.
Just when you think it is predictable, you are surprised!
When housewife and mother Shelby Nichols goes to the grocery for carrots she comes home with the ability to read minds. It would ruin the fun to explain the hilarious adventure that caused it. She tries to hide her ability in the hope it is temporary. Which of course it isn’t. When her husband figures it out it puts a strain on their …
I’ve had this book on my Kindle for years and let it get buried. I finally found it and read it. Shelby Nichols drops by the supermarket to buy a bag of carrots and her life changes. After an injury, she develops the ability to read minds. She obviously tries to hide that ability, for fear of being shunned, but, jealous of her lawyer husband’s …
Funny, sassy, unpredictable. A wild good time!
So Shelby stops at the grocery store to buy carrots so she can make chicken noodle soup, and then she gets shot in the head by a man robbing the bank in the grocery store, and then she can read minds. This premise made the book Carrots a lot of fun to read for about the first third of the book. But as one thing led to another, the plot got more …
This is one of the best new books I have read and am really glad it happens to be a series. The premise of being able to read minds made the plot thicken many times and the reader never knew what would happen next. All the characters tied in with each other seamlessly. Great book and can’t wait to read more in the series!
Such a fun and easy read from the first page.
Life changed all because of buying carrots from the grocery store. How little events can change your life forever. Went a little down the dark path kinda fast. Would have liked her mind reading capabilities being used for the police more. I guess I’m an Allison Dubois “Medium” at heart. It was only after the show ended that I found out the lady …
Fun read! Page Turner.
This made me laugh out loud a lot. It’s not realistic but who care 😉
