Stephen King’s legendary debut, about a teenage outcast and the revenge she enacts on her classmates. Carrie White may be picked on by her classmates, but she has a gift. She can move things with her mind. Doors lock. Candles fall. This is her power and her problem. Then, an act of kindness, as spontaneous as the vicious taunts of her classmates, offers Carrie a chance to be a normal…until an … normal…until an unexpected cruelty turns her gift into a weapon of horror and destruction that no one will ever forget.

I read this in one night. The pace of the book was fast, easy to read, and the story was so good, I couldn’t put it down and it was dawn!
This is so much more than a horror story. There may be supernatural elements but it’s also a real-world tale of what happens when a vulnerable person is pushed too far. Superb, fast-paced writing. No wonder the author went on from this debut to become a megastar.
Stephen King’s best was his first. Read Carrie, if you want a lesson in classic tale telling and entertaining read.
Not only was Carrie the first Stephen King novel I ever read, I think it was one of the first adult novels I ever read. As a kid I skipped the teen section, going straight from children’s classics to adult classics and adult contemporary.
The thing that always stuck with me about Carrie was the relationship between Carrie and her neighbor, though there is plenty to praise with this novel. Original and haunting, Carrie tells a very human tale with some incredibly dark twists.
I really like horror movies and often struggle to find good horror novels, but this one is definitely a classic. I don’t always like the book more than the film, but in this case I do. The novel is weird. It’s really weird. And it’s awesome.
I highly recommend it to anyone who likes dark novels with great characters.
This book is a classic and almost fifty years old! It makes you cringe again and again yet you can’t look away. Stephen King is great at that.
One of my favourite Stephen King books
Stephen King is Stephen King, he’s always good.
The story is really enjoyable, just only the moments about the letters freaked me out sometimes, but that’s okay.
I think every person would act like Carrie if people laughed at her as much as the children from her school. The book makes you realize that no person in the world deserves a mockery.
Although this is Stephen King’s first novel it still retains the power of King’s imagination and unforgettable characters. His depiction of High School is all too familiar and you find yourself identifying with his characters.
Am I a King fan? After reading Carrie, I will say that what I loved most about King’s writing is it is different. I read a lot, and I always try to incorporate a thriller. King is a unique author in the sense he really takes you on the psychological journey of his characters. It isn’t just a story from their perspectives, and you guess the killer. He takes you into their minds, which I thought was really original and something I am unsure how he can do!
Now, there were spelling mistakes in Carrie that left me disappointed! I was like, WHY? Is it apart of the book and meant to be like there? Regardless, I am not sure, but comment and let me know if it is.
@Stephen_King
What can I say it’s Stephen king! I first read Carrie as a teen in high school and my God I couldn’t put it down! I was instantly in love! It was compelling and it sucked you right in, telling the story through newspaper articles and eyewitness accounts that made the book incredibly realistic! The best part is the epic finale! I won’t spoil it BUT it’s so much better than the movies! You thought her destroying prom was epic, just wait till you read this! You won’t regret it!
Perfection.
As a huge fan of Stephen King, I loved reading Carrie! Unlike many people who read this book, I saw the classic 1975 movie years before I read it, but I was way too young to read the book when it was first published. But I have since seen the movie and and its 2002 television remake many times because of how much I enjoy both movies. When I read the book, I was delighted to find that the original horror movie classic was a remarkably faithful adaptation! Still, I agree with everyone who says that the book is better. Not surprisingly, you get to know the character of Carrie White in a way that no movie has ever been able to pull off and probably ever will. I felt even more heartbroken about the extent of bullying she had to endure, not only at the hands of her classmates and peers, but also at the hands of her own deranged, fanatical mother, while reading the book. After all, getting the insight into her own thoughts and feelings gave me even more of an understanding of how tormented and alone she felt. Compared to the movies, the famous “prom night revenge” scenario felt slightly underwhelming to experience when reading the book, but I still got the satisfaction of seeing her tormentors get their “just desserts.” Since I was obviously also hoping for a really scary supernatural horror novel when I read the book, the events that unfolded afterward easily satisfied my bloodlust for terror! The only thing I truly found disappointing about this book was the outcome, but that’s not nearly enough to keep it from being a really exciting, terrifying story that completely entertained me, providing me with 245 pages of nonstop pleasure! Stephen King clearly scored a masterpiece with his first book! For horror fans who are looking for a real shocker from the King of Horror or are hoping that their first experience with a Stephen King book will be a truly exciting and scary one, I recommend it! For his fans who are simply looking for another great story from this incredible storyteller, I also recommend it! GREAT READING!!
IMHO the best by King. Tragic and horrifying. Although it has a supernatural side, it’s an interesting focus on the problem of bullying.
Even having saw the movie first I was still surprised when I finally got into reading this novel by one of my FAVORITE authors
I wholeheartedly recommend this book—it was one of the best I’ve read in a long time.
Nothing less can be expected from the king of the horror him self. It was his 1st book so like every freaking book it has some flaws but i liked it.
I love Stephen King. I have read every one of his books and just am thrilled with them all. I’ve read Carrie over and over again and enjoy it every time, it really does have something to say about not bullying someone. this girl carries a heavy burden in the book and she is tipped over at the end and acts out in a very bad way.I enjoy the fact that Stephen King ties all of his books together with one or two small details. I would recommend this book.
Not the greatest Stephen King book but due to it being the first one and having a lot of nostalgia I love it.
awesome book
I have read this book a least a dozen times over the years and it is mind-blowing every single time.
