I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the contemporary books of this author, but for some reason, I’ve not read any of her paranormal romance books. I’m totally kicking myself for that now! This book was absolutely amazing, completely unlike anything I’ve read before. (And I’ve read many different types of PNR, from vampires that are aliens, to different types of ware-animals, to mermen, nothing has been off limits!) This particular story, is a book about Vampires, and the mythical Fair folk of Irish legend, the Tuatha de Danaan!
Isabel is a powerful, high ranking, ancient vampire, who has come to Tara, the land of the Tuatha de Danaan, to assure that the Wraith Accords still stand true. The Wraith Accords are a mutually beneficial agreement between the two races, agreed upon hundreds of years before, that protected them all. Right from the beginning, she knows that things are not what they seem, and approaches it like a puzzle to be solved. With the help of Aed, the warrior assigned to her, (I’m not sure if it was to protect her, or to protect them from her, in the beginning!) Isabel sets out to unravel the happenings, endeavoring to protect the Wraith Accords, at all cost.
This book begins with a bit of background, and proceeds with the beginning of Isabel’s visit to Tara. With a judicious use of bits and pieces of folk lore and fairy tales, the author builds a story that branches out into one of the most inventive romance stories I’ve read in a very long time! Isabel and Aed are drawn to each other, but are also pulled apart by their obvious differences, by happenings beyond their control, and by some crazy royal intrigue! There was so much going on in this story that I could not have put the book down, even if I’d wanted to! This is one of those books that I couldn’t wait to see what happened at the end, but didn’t want it to be over, at the same time! If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!
Lila Dubois weaves a mesmerizing tale involving Vampires and Tuatha de Denaan from the Fae. This fascinating love story is set amidst intrigue, mystery, magic and danger. The two main characters are strong, lusty, smart and dynamic
Caught up in the political turmoil of two specials who are natural enemies are Isabel Santiago, Counselor to leader of the Vampire and her assigned Royal Guard Aed mac Goll, a Fianna Warrior. Isabel makes no secret of her attraction to Aed from their initial introduction and she boldly seduces him. Aed’s desire for Isabel isn’t any less strong and he is her willing victim. After a clumsy assassination attempt it becomes apparent someone is trying to sabotage the Wraith Accords by setting Isabel up. She is forced to flee and her protector, Aed, follows her. Venturing into the human world with her warrior in tow, Isabel needs to find answers in order to prevent the failure of the 200 year old Accords.
Carnal Magic is he beginning of a series of stand alone fantasy epics. This first book explains the mythology and creates the “world” so effectively that I was drawn into this story completely. As we learn about these characters they are even more interesting. Isabel is so smart, Aed has so much integrity, and the other Tuathe de seem to be constantly playing political as well as carnal games. I like that this book has a plot that is resolved but also an overarching mystery that we only get the least bit of. Which characters will forward our resolution next? I can’t wait!
~ 5 Carnal Magic Stars ~
Carnal Magic book one in The Wraith Accords series by Lila Dubois is a spellbinding paranormal romance. Mrs. Dubois pulled me into her magical world of the Fae and Vampire’s. I was blown away by the mystery and breathtaking description of the world.
Isabel is a strong women and very knowledgeable. That knowledge and ability to play the political games help’s her. Aed mac Goll was the perfect counter part to Isabel.
This is my first experience reading Lila Dubois and all I can say is WOW. Ms. Dubois is very descriptive of the world and characters that at times I felt like I was really their. I could picture everything so clearly. Once I started I could not put this book down, even when the main couple hooked up on the first day of meeting it did not put me off. They had amazing chemistry and their flirtatious talk helped the romance too bloom and grow. The romance came second to the mystery that is taking place. I found myself drawn to the mystery that surrounded Isabel and Aed mac Goll as they fought their growing feelings and battled an enemy they could not see. I enjoyed the twist of the Vampire and Fae love.
Carnal Magic is an exceptional read. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Everything about it peaked my interests and took me on a fabulous adventure. Bye the end I was wanting more and can’t wait to pick up another book in this series. Defiantly worth picking up especially if you enjoy a good mystery with your paranormal.
