SOMETIMES A GIRL HAS TO TAKE WHAT SHE CAN GET.
When Jolie’s cloaked midnight rescuer ends up being the sexiest Spanish captain this end of the Caribbean, she figures a long ocean voyage to freedom on his brigantine might not be the worst thing that could have happened to a proper Englishwoman. Especially one who’s just been caught committing a crime and needs an escape route, fast. Captain … crime and needs an escape route, fast.
Captain Gabriel Marcano’s not searching for love on Crab Island—he’s looking for Spain’s beloved national treasure, the Corazón de Isabela. So when he shows up back at his brigantine with a half-drowned English beauty instead of the famous gold nugget, he has some explaining to do. His only intention is the girl’s safe passage to Europe, he informs his crew, and her presence will have no effect whatsoever on his command of the ship.
All lies, Marcano admits to himself, especially when the fair-skinned wench stares at him with those innocent whisky-colored eyes…truth is, living in such close quarters with his little damsel in distress causes him far more trouble than he’d planned. And things only go from bad to worse when her violent past catches up with them, threatening to tear them apart forever.
“Simply put, the chemistry between Marcano and Jolie works seamlessly, making for delicious reading… Fans of action-packed romance novels about life on the high seas won’t be disappointed.” 4½ Stars – SPR

Couldn’t put the book down. Didn’t want it to end. Fascinating reading
I loved this book. The suspense is amazing. I would recommend this book. It is definitely a page turner!
I’ve just finished reading this wonderful story fraught with danger, adventure and some sadness. But most of all tells of the undying love between Joli and Gabreil. I enjoyed it so much and will keep reading more works from this talented writer. Thanks so much Jayla!
Good story but sex, sex, sex. Fast reading when I skipped through those pages.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There was so much more to it than just a love story, although that was obviously the main theme. Worth the time to read!
This story was such a fun read. It really had everything I love. I thought the characters were very well-written and the pacing was perfect. I really appreciated that it had a developed plot that didn’t just revolve around the romance. There were other things going on in the story and it made it feel really authentic. I really love how this author writes her heroes. I’ve also read her book Sweet Barbarian and the hero was similar in that story too. Strong but not egotistical, protective but not overly possessive or controlling. Overall this story was a joy and I’ll be looking forward to more by this author.
Caribbean Jewel by Jayla Jasso reminds me of the historical romances I used to read in my youth. It is full of swashbuckling adventurers, damsels in distress, edge of your seat action and swoon worthy love scenes. Georgette Heyer would be proud to share a bookshelf with Jayla Jasso!
Ms. Jasso’s characters come alive as you read, and through her masterful storytelling you feel as though you are there on the high seas. I read to escape from reality, if only for a brief moment. To me, a really good book, magically transports me to another World, another time. If I get lost in a good story, time slips away and before I know it the sun is setting, the day is gone. Caribbean Jewel by Jayla Jasso, is that kind of a novel!
I especially loved Ms. Jasso’s sub-story of the cruelty to slaves and the evil slave master who rules by violence. That her heroine grows stronger as she conquers her own fears to save the lives of others is masterful storytelling.
There a are plenty of twists and turns in this book, times that you hold your breath as you think all is lost, and times when the hero rides in at just the right moment. Swords clash and cannons fire, interspersed with passionate love scenes that remind the reader what the fighting has been all about. Finally, the story ends with true love conquering evil and the hero and heroine live happily ever after. And with a sigh, I closed the book and considered reading it all over again!
Well done, Jayla Jasso! Well done!
I really liked this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys this type of genre. I enjoy a strong woman character with some backbone and gumption, and this one does. I really wished the second book of the series continued their story on some level. I wanted to know more about these two.
Good basic historical romance.
Fun book to read. Interesting characters and good story
I enjoy pirate stories and this book was very entertaining.
Sometimes a girl has to take what she can get. When Jolene’s cloaked midnight rescuer ends up being the sexiest Spanish captain this end of the Caribbean, she figures a long ocean voyage to freedom on his brigantine might not be the worst thing that could have happened to a proper Englishwoman. She caught committing a crime and needs a fast escape route. Captain Gabriel is not searching for love. He is looking for Span’s beloved national treasure. He has some explaining to do when he returns to his ship with a half-drowned woman instead of a gold nugget. His only intention is for Jolene’s safe passage to Europe. Living in close proximity causes Gabriel far more than planned. Thins get worse when her violent past catches up with them. – This is a good story about two people in need finding and rescuing each other. I liked most of the story but would have liked it more without the battles. Jolene and Gabriel are likeable characters. Their empathy is admirable, and their strength is commendable. I enjoyed the connection that Jolene had with the slaves and the young boy on Gabriel’s ship.
This was a pretty good read. Wasn’t terribly far fetched but was interesting and I wanted to finish the book. Sometimes alot of the historical romance novels are predictable, this one wasn’t so much.
Knowing how much work goes into writing a book, I hate to criticize it. This author just isn’t ready to hit the big leagues. Shallow character development. It was less about plot and more about unrealistic infatuation.
although I liked the characters, their interaction felt stilted
While I liked the hero and his show of honor towards the heroine he rescues, I found him to be inept and an unlikely captain of the ship. It has plot standards of the evil guardian uncle, forced betrothal, runaway and rescue. Gabriel’s sexual frustration with Jolie’s innuendos when she says she’s miserable and needs him to sleep in her bed was well done.
The violence was truly brutal.
