I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. This is a good quiet afternoon’s read. It is a light cozy mystery very enjoyable, for the most part. There were several times where the writing became a bit choppy but other than that it was a nice way to spend the afternoon.
Review:
4 Stars
I purchased a copy of the Florida based Dead in the Water Boxed Set: Caribbean Cruise Cozy Mystery Books 1 – 3: Drugged on Deck, Dead in the Water, and Stolen at Sea by Susan Harper and this review was given freely. All three books are fast paced covering a few days to a week and contain a murder, the rendition of college student Hope’s constantly changing schedule, Hope’s investigative skills and a diverse group of interesting characters. They can be read singularly as there is a portion of recap but, are best read in series order as they are linked together chronologically.
Drugged on Deck:
Realistic characters, drama and a murder.
Part time college student and Jack of All Trades Hope begins the Caribbean Honey’s season’s initial cruise with high hopes only to become frustrated when the abrasive and vindictive London born Felix is given the promotion she was expecting and seems to be always underfoot but then she teams up with him to solve a murder.
Dark theme of female directed prejudice.
Dead in the Water:
A hate –Like relationship, a savvy Hope and a murder.
Hope accompanies Felix to the FT. Lauderdale’s cruise company’s season opening party where her Hispanic friend Catalina’s large ship and non-ship based family is present. Contains strife in the form of Felix’s intrusive personal questions and the murder of one of Catalina’s granddaughter’s boyfriend
Dark themes of racial/female directed prejudice.
Stolen at Sea:
Contains action, danger and suspense with a fair amount of family drama and a murder.
Hope and her friends’ second cruise of the season is complicated by an art theft, murder, and the arrival of Felix’s abusive and controlling father.
Dark themes of racial bias and abuse.
Fun easy reading Not exceptional but good
This was a good cozy mystery which I like to read every once in awhile because you know there isn’t going to be tons of sex and “F” bomb on every page. The setting of this book was a cruise ship. I loved reading it because it brought back memories of all our cruises. The main character, Holly, has worked hard trying to move up the ladder. She thought for sure she was going to be the next Events Coordinator but no, it was given to some guy who wasn’t even in the business. The man, Felix, is the step-son of the ship company. They eventually get along but then comes a murder, an important art canvas stolen and having to deal with both Felix and his stepfather. Nice written short cozy murder story.
What a fantastic adventure! The whole concept behind the series of paintings was very intriguing and ingenious! I love mysteries within mysteries! It is also a whole lot of fun to watch the relationship between Hope and Felix develop. I loved reading this mystery!
It was an easy read. However the story line was a bit inconsistent and the characters could have been fleshed out better.
Not as good as the Flight Risk series. I find the h a bit too immature and ditsy. She is certainly to immature for the Event Coordinator position she thinks she should have. The H was a bit too much of a smarmy stalker type, following the h around from the minute he met her and getting in the way of her job. The cruise line owner and his friend were way overdone nasty rich people. So the mystery, I solved that early on but needed to wade through quite a bit of silliness to get to the end. Not sure if I will read any more of this series.
