I love historical fiction and this is my favorite author in this category. This is my favorite book of all in his collection. I read this every time I go on vacation to the Caribbean. The history is so rich with interesting characters and you can see the effects of that history whenever and wherever you travel in the Caribbean. I never tire …
I like all of James Michener’s books although they do take a commitment of your time since they are so long. What I like is the mix of history and family stories through the generations. I read Caribbean some years ago, and just finished rereading it since I recently moved to the US Virgin Islands. Warning: there is some violence including …
I’m a big Michener fan and have read many of his epic books. Somehow I missed this one. Unfortunately not one of his best. Plodding and repetitious.
Similar to most of his books this one is not as pleasurable as his other subjects. However, I did finish this. I believe though one would enjoy it. I would rate it 9 out of 10.
Great read on history of all the Caribbean Islands.
Wow – – an incredible journey through the history of the Caribbean Islands from ancient Carib natives to the pirates of the Caribbean to sugar cane, rum and slave trade through present day politics. It is impossible to explain the societal differences between the islands and understand what motivates the various classes and groups of people on …
What can I say about Michener that has not been said by so many others, he is a wonderful storyteller. He weaves fact and fiction together into a story that can not be put down. He writes the story that you can’t wait to get to the end of to see how it ends but at the same time you hope the story never ends because it is so engrossing
Not his best work. Weak character development, more convenient than realistic. I recommend reading it for the basic history value more than realistic description of life in the time.
What a great book! This book takes you through the history of the area in a very vivid and live way. It’s amazing seeing how the Caribbean was so interwined with other events too, like the French and American revolutions.
It was like a gift: so enjoyed reading this story about an area we all hear about so much. In fact, having read it some time ago, I plan to do it again!
Typical Michener style, but not as captivating as other novels.
If you know Michener, you know how well he writes historical novels. This book includes reveals information that was never taught in history classes, including That from Europe and the United States.

Greetings, Adventure Seekers, from the treacherous frozen north.
Have you ever wondered if pirate villages, like in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, actually existed, or thought, where did all that supposed pirate booty come from? Have you ever asked yourself who really were those pirates and were they as colorful as One-Eyed Willy from The …
Loved being transported to this amazing island paradise.
